Wilfred Bouma - Good News/Bad News!

2big4seatswannastand says Wilfred Bouma. Good news, bad news!

Whilst perusing the Euro 2012 international squads, in order to select yet another 'dream team' in the hope I can be top dog and win a few quid, I was very pleasantly surprised to see the name Wilfred Bouma listed.

I like many others had believed that the reason he was not offered a new contract at the end of the 2009-10 season, was that he would be unable to regain the required level of fitness to prolong his career. Further research revealed that he has managed 53 appearances for PSV since leaving Villa, and has indeed forced his way back into the Dutch squad.

As Freddie was one of my favourite players, I wish him well for the forthcoming tournament, and his progress and that Olof Mellberg, will give me some interest after the England lads are back in the UK. However one has to question our medical staff, for the decision to let him go.

We could've had Freddie for the last two years instead of Warnock! But the good news far outweighs the bad and let's hope Freddie can carry on playing for many more games before he hangs up his boots.

I've brought shame to the site, I'd deleted his photo. I've let you all down, I hang my head in shame!

Gosh I can still remember Bouma's first (and only) Villa goal against Newcastle like it was yesterday, what a player and what a guy.

He struggled under DOL but certainly flourished under MON. I could never understand the reluctance to throw him back into the swing of things....no, hang on, I can......MON didnt have a clue about full backs and their importance in the modern game. Maybe never the same player again aftre such an injury but his re-emergance in the Dutch set up suggests he has bounced back big time.

Along with a few of MON's releases, I was annoyed at the time and nothing that has happened since has changed my mind. Much like my opinions of all things during the MON era, both good and bad. ANYWAY. Delighted for Freddie. Good player and seems like a good bloke too.

Will be watching with interest. Hope he gets match time.

Yes, good news - hope the good wishes of Villa fans can be passed on to him. It would be good to see a nice pic of him on here. Oh wait ... ;-)
BobTheBuilder
The only reason he is in the squad is because Erik Pieters got injured... Lambert should look to sign Ralph Varane (CB) and/or Erik Pieters (LB)

Still a good achieve and id prefer him to warnock :)

Freddie was brilliant for us and was always a favourite of mine. His injury was horrific, I know, I had a similar one. I am delighted he made the Dutch squad, and I wish him well. My old white Diadora jersey with Mellberg 4 on the back and MG on the front came out of retirement today for the gym. Good luck to him, too, good memories of both.

Shame about Freddie. Good but he was no Jonny Gidman.
