Norwich Want To Keep Holt.  Villa Don't Care?

I think that Paul Lambert has already hinted that he isn`t going to go back to his former club for striker Grant Holt when he said, 'Grant Holt was absolutely brilliant for me. In the three years I was there he was a huge part of what happened. But things move on. I need to know what`s happening at Aston Villa before I do anything. The chairman and Paul Faulkner know that and then we`ll try to bring players in."

At 31 and with Norwich wanting over £4million I`d doubt it would be the sort of signing the board / manager would want as it wouldn`t really build for the future would it?

Anyway, only bit of transfer talk today so far is the new Norwich manager Chris Hughton saying he`ll fight to keep Holt.

He told The Sun

"I can fully understand all the speculation about Grant Holt`s future. He is a top quality player. The number of goals he has scored for Norwich over the last three seasons — especially last season in the Premier League — says it all and I don`t think any manager would not want to keep a player like that. I`ve only just come in through the door so I haven`t had a chance to speak to him. But obviously my main priority will be to keep him here."

Adding that Holt has a contract at Norwich (with two years still to run) and as a fans favourite and the club`s Player of the Season award winner for three seasons in a row, "he is definitely someone I want to keep at Carrow Road."

Congrats to Hughton by the way, seems a good decent bloke, football person and manager.

Fear I am with you in congratulating Chris, top bloke and an x Irish International to boot. Grant Holt while being a good striker would be a bad investment at 4mil bearing in mind his age. That being said if he scored 15 odd goals for us then it could be good business. Maybe it was our new (I love saying that) Manager that got the best out of him, hopefully he might do that with our existing players COTVABU

Holt scoring in front of the Holte has a nice ring, but this isn't fantasy football we are playing here. We know that finances will dictate most things for the forseeable future. We have a philanthropic Chairman that is wonderful for our club (previous managerial choice aside) but he is not blessed with oil or communist block mafia money. A £5m purchase of Holt on a two year contract at £40K a week will cost the club over £10m when signing on fees, agents money is accounted for. There is no resale value and would be £10m the club would never see again. Would this be the best use of resources? Or could £10m be better spent on a younger foreign/lower league player with potential? The days of the M'ON spending are long gone.

gibbo - IF his goals get us into Europe. If is the biggest word in that sentence. Randolph worked on the If principle with M'ON and it led to the position we are in now regarding finances. Personally I believe that should we buy anyone and they do not work out then they must still have a resale value. You should only take a chance on older players if they are available free or on pay as you play. Chasing the dream has led to the downfall of Wednesday, Leeds, Forest, Portsmouth and more. Football finances now dicate that this policy can only be afforded by the clubs with sugar daddies.

Thanks Hughton for joining Norwich I've had hours & hours of fun tormenting a Bluenose in my office. When we appointed PL he was banging on & on about us taking a manager from a little club like Norwich lack of ambition etc & now Norwich have taken the manager of an even smaller club ! So sweet , reap what you sow

If Holt got 15 goals a season in the next couple of seasons too he'd be a bargain at 4mill, but only one season in the Premier League is hardly enough to back his case up. I don't think the board would go for it

And realistically I don't think Villa could match Bosingwa/Kalou's wages or immediate ambitions.
