Lots of stick for Whelan at the moment and I can't understand why? He has one of the most sought after managers in the game and has fended off the likes of Redscouse and us to keep him at Wigan ffs. Whatever he is doing is working. The senile old Grandad impression belies a very shrew operator in my eyes. Those who read the interview with Martinez recently will possibly have had their eyes opened to how both Martinez and Whelan have each instilled a sense of loyalty to each other in way not even seen in the modern game. Maybe those who critisise either/both are they themselves lacking the emotional skills to see this? Todays hire and fire em and cowering to all things financial attitude has maybe clouded peoples judgements as what actually happens when a man gives his word. Personally both Martinez and Whelan hace both gone up in my estimation.
