Fingers Pointing Towards Roberto Martinez

As reported, or suspected by some press and fans for weeks, things seem to be pointing towards Wigan`s manager Roberto Martinez still for Villa.

A lot seem unsure or against, I must admit, I`d be perfectly happy with that. He`ll take the project, sort us top to bottom and hopefully set us back on the right path. Also, hopefully, as this is about as big a job as he can expect (?) he might have some loyalty and stick at Villa for a while, we need continuity and a decent style of play instilled back into the place.

Some say he hasn`t done anything at Wigan. That is mad. To keep them up is a massive achievement when their best players have to be sold each season. He also helped set Swansea on their way and wouldn`t leave until he thought they were safely moving forward.

See the Wigan ed interview: Interview With A Wigan Fan On Roberto Martinez

Some say he turned us down last time so sod him. BUT if you actually look at what happened, he had given his word to the Wigan blabbermouth, sorry, I meant Chairman that he would be there last season. Therefore, quite politely I'm sure, he declined the chance to interview for us.

So what?

Seriously, what did he do wrong there?

He gave his word, he kept his word.

Sounds the ideal sort of character if that is right doesn't it?

Also, with Randy Lerner returning for him, (IF true) then it shows he isn't petty either. They obviously see something in him, as do Liverpool.

ALL managers are a gamble, you never know until they arrive but if this one happens, I hope the negativity that some have now will be replaced with support (as some of us got slated for doing last season) ...

The www.mirror.co.uk say that Liverpool are going for Brendan Rodgers and that Roberto Martinez is favourite for the Villa job.

Interestingly (or not!) Rodney Marsh has twittered: I can not believe Martinez has chosen ?#AVFC? over ?#Liverpool? https://twitter.com/RodneyMarsh10/status/207599887238443008

I can believe it Rodney, we have better training facilities and aren`t based in Liverpool for a start! JOKING! To be fair, both jobs are tough, but if Martinez was asked to work with a director of football and doesn`t want to, then he is within his rights is he not? Villa is a bit of a tough job as well, us fans expect what might now be unrealistic but who knows where we could be in a few years IF the fair play rules start to kick in a little. Still think the league has now been ruined and bought and that is that, but time will tell.

Forum thread and poll: Click Here

The report says Eager Lerner hopes to resolve the saga on Wednesday, after being informed by Martinez`s representatives that he will consider the job.

The report does however fall down in accuracy when they say that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turned down the job. Sorry, he didn`t. He wanted to rule himself out of the running for the job, fine, but he wasn`t offered and I don`t think he was going to be offered the job.

As I said in another article the other day, when did we get so picky? lol. He`d do a fine job for us if he came. He is young, he has blooded himself in at Swansea in league one taking them to the Championship and then at a tough club to keep moving forward, or even keeping stagnant, Wigan. He is young, ambitious, hungry for success and also, I`m told by the Wigan editor, very good with the fans.

Maybe I`m just a bit easier to please, once announced I support any manager until they prove unworthy, some prove themselves unworthy quickly (Houllier for his Liverpool comments) but most to me deserve a bit of time, respect and support.

Unlike many it seems these days, it is Aston Villa I support, not a particular manager.

REMEMBER... this is still very much press speculation, not fact... It will be fact when we see whoever is named at the press conference.

would be a great appointment for us - i said before the ogs saga he was our main choice. attacking football will be a 100% certainty with him .. and he has a class striker for once to work with in bent. Weimann looks great too - he will do well for us. mat kendrick is saying its pretty much him or lambert - i believe mat as he is the only reported that has been right so far
villa4life87
Would love him at VP. A man of integrity. Positivity and a wonderful reputation in the game. Look how he handled the applling situation when Chelsea were wrongly awarded 2 goals to beat Wigan 2 - 1. The man is a class act. If we get him then brilliant. If he goes to Liverpool then they will be very lucky to have him. If he stays at Wigan then Whelan is a genius. But without doubt he is the right calibre of manager for Randolph to be looking for. It maybe that Whelans respect for Randolph and the fact that Randolph goes about his business in the right way could be the determining factor here.
voiceoftheholte
Agree 100% VOTH.
144wittonlane
Id take him over Lambert defo.
leelindsay
Good to here VOTH sooooo positive! Worth having RM for that alone.
Gordonsleftboot
I would still prefer Lambert but I wouldn't be unhappy with Martinez, Rodgers, Poyet etc. In fact, I believe that as long as it's not one of the revolving names like Curbishley or Hoddle VP will be a happy place again.
M5villa
At least, he'd probably sort N'Zogbia out and let him play where he's best!
delirium
Great post VOTH. I have that exciting feeling, the one that has alluded me ever since Ole was ruled out :-)
mattyh1986
"To keep them up is a massive achievement when their best players have to be sold each season" ermm sounds a bit like the job Mcliesh took on!!
eltoro
lol - glb. There was only the one man who could bring out the devil in me haha. Unfortunately he cast a spell over the good people like Randolph and co. Fortunately though, Randolphs legion of warriors rode to his rescue and the anti christ was banished and Randolph once again became the philanthropist and all round good guy that we know he is. But we must beware, there are bad people out there trying to banish the goodness from our leader they are known as Bruceys and McCarthys. Keep your eyes open and ensure that our leader chooses the right path towards the town of our destiny . . . . .Glory.
voiceoftheholte
nice work VOTH. Martinez fine by me also.
leftfoot
I'd love him at Villa. No 1 choice for me
AstonBilla
Delighted if its Martinez, as Fear says will sort us out from top to bottom, also attacking football. Time to get behind Lerner and AVFC once again!!!! UTV
astonsteve
good.

No negativety from me if we do get Martinez, if i was prepared to give Mcleish until the end of January to get us playing some football im pretty sure i am more than happy to support Martinez and hope he builds this club back in years to come back towards the top 6, whovever is manager gets my 100% backing and support, and in a manager like Martinez its imperative we fans be patient and let him chnge the footballing style philosophy of the team to a more passing and attacking mindset its important we do our part now no more drama please!
ClivetheVillan
I'd be quite happy with this, he's done a good job keeping Wigan in the Prem and signed some players nobody had heard of that turned out very well.
juddy
No thanks - not interested. Dont want him
crosswesleyanchapel
I remember a home defeat for us not long ago to a fabulous Rodallega goal from distance. I remember the amazing last minute survivals orchestrated ny Martinez. I remember Wigan v WBA on telly last season and Wigan had about 19 chances and got just one. Benty would have scored 6 that day. I remember Wigan beating the top clubs last season and being robbed by two awful refereeing decisions to the eventual Champions League winners - He will do for me thank you very much!
WentToRotterdam
Huge thumbs up from me. It'll be nice to see football being played at VP once again, rather than the mundane rubbish that has been dished out for far too long!
Gastard Villan
IF we get him it will be a brilliant signing, he can stay for 10 years and build the club from the ground up, the right way
AdzVilla11
everyone is getting way too carried away, same as with OGS. I wouldn't mind him at VP and we'd play great footie but I just don't see it happening.
AVbornandbred
Still do not understand this picky Villa fans thing last season I would gladly have accepted Bruce or McCarthy instead of Eck. Right now I am bloody delighted to have us associated with Lambert,Martinez,Poyet any of them would be good enough for me So long as they dont fetch the Wally with the brolly back from F.C. TWENTE ime happy.
Merlin128777
He'd be a vast improvement on McLeish, as would Lambert. I'd be happy with either to be honest. A young hungry manager is what we need right now after the last couple of appointments.
young_jonah
I'm not sure that anybody is getting carried away AV, just voicing (in the main) that they would be happy if this were to happen.
juddy
Eltoro, Martinez and Eck did have the same mission last year. One had considerably more resources than the other, yet the other played attractive football and got his tiny little club with a weak and small squad to get more points and finish above 'Mighty Aston Villa' whilst on the way, beating all of the clubs that Eck believed Villa couldnt "hope to compete against". Dont compare these two managers in any way. Martinez could become the best villa manager ever. Seriously, if we all get behind the project (if it happens) it could be the rebirth of this grand old club.
TelfordVilla
wanted martinez from the start, he will bring proper football to villa for the first time in a long time, we have to be patient though he won't do it overnight just look at some of our players they have never played anything but hoofball, lambert would be my 2nd choice then poyet if we can get any of these I think 2 -3 years and we will be steadily going back to the top
KerryVillian
I have fingers pointing at Martinez too..... two of 'em! So he'll get us playing..... I'm sure he will - for the last 2 months of the season. Excuse me, but the season starts in August, NOT in March! This is getting silly...............And I've not mentioned him turning us down last year.
Pride of Lions
Pride of lions. He didn't turn us down last year. He was invited to apply for the job, but as a man of honour and principle he stayed with Wigan. Whelan had made several promises to him if he accepted the Wigan job including the opening of several sports stores in his home town in Spain. He accepted and Whelan kept his side of the bargain. Out of loyalty he stayed with the man for another season. Are you saying that you do not want a man with principles and loyalty in his locker? A man that is happy to meet the challenge of much bigger funded clubs head on instead of playing for a 0 0? Ferguson managed Aberdeen before Manure. And who was Wenger before turning up at the Arse? In football it is about getting the right man at the right time. Only the truly big clubs can pick and choose proven winners. Martinez has a reputation second to none in the game and if Villa get him it would be a coup. It doesn't mean he will work out, but it puts the fire back in the belly of most Villa supporters, even if not you.
voiceoftheholte
I totally agree with m5villa and VOTH. It's nice Villa fans are agreeing again.I also feel I will spend more on villa if we get Martinez.
thekentvillan
Rodgers has accepted job at Liverpool according to the BBC. One struck off the list ... next?
144wittonlane
You watch the Redscouse press come out and say he was always first choice, despite the fact Gerrard was on TV talking about how he would welcome Martinez at the club a couple of days ago. He wouldn't have said that if he hadn't been given the nod. They wanted Martinez who appears not to have been given the assurances he wanted and have taken the second choice. Lets hope he does as well as he did at Reading and Watford.
voiceoftheholte
"To keep them up is a massive achievement when their best players have to be sold each season..." I'm sure McLeish would say exactly the same about Villa.
Saurat
saurat - not sure Martinez ever had 20m to spend in one transfer window at Wigan
voiceoftheholte
Marttinez apparently pledges his future to Wigan now!! Great! Who now? I've always wanted Gus Poyet and a decent assistant. Could it be about to come true?
melski
SSN announced Martinez to STAY at Wigan while Rodgers goes to LFC. So who's this mystery 3rd man?
