'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Time to be Positive!!

I am not sure when it happened, but if things carry on as the way they are we are about to be labeled as the 'Untouchables'. It seems that every forum and every comment is another reason to moan, gripe and generally do down our great club. I have been as guilty as others on this matter. It is like a disease. When it takes hold it is hard to shake off. Unfortunately when you are affected everybody avoids you and the only ones by your side are those who take pity.

This needs to stop and it needs to stop now! If not it will surely lead to the self destruction of our club. McLeish took us on out of pity and a desire to rob us of 2m a year, but no one else was bashing our door down demanding the greatest title in World Football - Manager of Aston Villa FC.

So can we try something different. You never know, we may actually like it!! It maybe infectious and others will like it and before long maybe even outsiders will see it and like it and want to be part of the euphoria sweeping the region.

I propose POSITIVITY for all things claret and blue and based in B6 6HE the postcode of Aston Villa Football Club, founders of the game, home of the birth of League Football and the true reason that most of us get out of bed each day.

We gave the game to the world. We have a statue outside the Trinity Road to recognise that William McGregor of Aston Villa gave the game to the world.

We are the 5th best performing team in the Premier League Years and one of only 7 teams to be ever present in the toughest, most demanding and most watched league in the World. Even before the Premier League we were one of England's most successful clubs with more League titles, FA Cups, League Cups than nearly everybody. Oh and by the way we won the European Cup when you had to be Champions to even enter the competition and we didn't need penalties to win it.

Our ground is superb. It is recognised World wide and the Holte End is still the biggest end terrace in English Football. Even in the old days of standing terraces it was the biggest. The Kop at Liverpool pah!!!. It was tiny in comparison to the Holte End, Villa Park B6 6HE. I remember standing on it amongst a crowd of 48,000 against Bournemouth in 1972 in the old 3rd Division. The press were telling everybody how wonderful Sheffield Wednesday were recently because they had 38,000 for a last day promotion game. Well let me tell you our 48,000 wasn't for a last game of the season, it was just another game and followed crowds of 40,000 for games against Chesterfield and Walsall. Villa Park in full cry is the best ground in the World. Yes it needs to be rocking more often and as supporters we need to fill it for every game and create the atmosphere week in week out, not just on the big nights. But it can be done as long as we have the positive attitude to doing it instead of looking for excuses for it not to happen.

More players have represented England whilst playing for Villa than they have for any other club. Yes that is correct. Manure, Chelski, the Arse. Don't make me laugh. England is Aston Villa. We are in the heart of our great country and the press don't want us to take over again and do us down at every opportunity they get. Even the National Stadium that everybody knows should be in Brum was not put in its rightful home. Do we care that Arse have a 60,000 stadium, that Chelsea will probably have one soon, that London also has the Olympic Stadium to go with Wembley and that even little old Spuds might want a new stadium as well. Well we don't care.

We are Aston Villa and we will go our own way. We haven't needed government support and intervention to create one of the most iconic grounds in the country. We haven't moved into the Council built stadium used previously as a running track as ManCiteh have done. We haven't relied on a disaster to build our fan base. Munich was a disaster and wouldn't be wished on any team and their families, but in the long run it has been the foundation for Manure developing a good world wide following. We have been built on the back of a hard working, loyal and dependable manufacturing area where people work hard and stay local and loyal. We are Brummies and we are proud.

We have one of the finest academies in the game and in KMAC one of the great unsung heroes bringing through the likes of Carruthers, Gabi, Albrighton, Clarke, Gardner, Baker, Herd, Lichaj etc. They have developed as winners as our reserve team consistently win the league. This winning mentality will be galvanised into the future of our club.

Thanks to Doug's foresight and Randolph's investment we have one of the finest training grounds in the country.

We do not have an owner who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. We have an owner who in 5 short years has earned a reputation as a philanthropist and a wonderful loyal Chairman who goes about his business in the correct way. He doesn't steamroller over everybody and treat them with disrespect. Of course there will be some who simply want the big bucks to compete with the Oil revenue. But that has never been our way and we should be proud of that, not complain that we want our own zillionaire. We should be proud doing things the right way. It may not buy titles and trophies, but it means we can hold our head up and our way means that only 6 other clubs in the country have maintained or levels for the the last 20 or so years. Yes he has made a couple of recruitment mistakes, but I do not seem to recall any Villa supporter stumping up the money he has and doing a better job. Strangely I have heard many moaning about it and complaining about spending 500 (the price of an average TV) on a season card. Well Randolph stumped up 250m because non of us Brummies were able to do it. Give the man the respect he deserves and has earned.
I know some will want to pick holes in this statement. Go ahead if that makes you feel better. If you want to moan and pick faults and blame everybody else as to why we are so negative then fill your boots. But a football club is only as good as its fans and is more often then not a reflection of the community in which it is based. So have a moan, whinge, gripe, make excuses whatever. I no longer care for the people who want to drag us down. I would rather be part of the process that drags us up.

In life there are people who do and there are people who make excuses as to why they don't.

We are Aston Villa. We are Prepared. And we need to get back to being a group of supporters who DO. Not a group of supporters who look for every reason as to why we do not. Support our players. Support our Chairman. Get your season tickets and support your club. Sing your hear out. And if any outsider tries to do us down then tell them where to go.

Once a Villa Man. Always a Villa Man. Now let the world know that next season we will win the League, the FA Cup and the League Cup and the following season we will win the Champions League. And if it doesn't happen next season it most certainly will the season after . . . . or the season after. It will happen if we believe it will.

UTV.

Prepared.

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or, being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

Well said, VOTH.

astonsteve - no news. The club have got a grip on the leaks and we seem to be acting professionally. I am as in the dark as everyone. Really looking forward to whoever it maybe and the new season though. UTV.

A great read Voice.

The lion wakes from it's slumber and roars...great article. The heart of the country, the engine room of England we built the largest percentage of munitions with BSA to help rid the world of Mr Hitler, the spitfire our iron fist and line in the sand grafted by our ancestors. The home of league football and Tennis, let's not forget custard and brown sauce! Handwork, sweat and heart are our currency and Aston Villa FC our one true love. Stand tall, sing load and proud to the good lord himself.....it's your round! Thank god I'm a villain ;o)

Positivity should be supported whenever it appears. Let's see more of it.
Freelancelot
I suspect it is going to be Martinez and that we will hear this week!!!!!!
astonsteve
Martinez!? Just as I was feeling positive...
onlyteaminthemids
Whoever it is - the time is right to support our club like never before. Last season was OUR wake up call. Many of us, me included feared the worst. It will not happen again. We will once again be the 12th man. Villa Park will be a place that everyone will fear and it will be the home of the Pride of Lions. Martinez, Lambert, Poyet, Villas Boas. Bring 'em in and we will do our duty in helping them restore Aston Villa to the business end of the table. UTV. Prepared. The 19th Minute.

Once more into the Breach etc etc

Hear hear!! I've had enough negativity to last me a life time. Up The Villa!!
Adam Deuce
Decent post VOTH. It's good to be reminded of our history and facts every now and again. Yes, we're Prepared, what we're not prepared for is the dross we've been experiencing lately. We already DO actually because we are not prepared to accept all the dross. Negativity is NOT created by the fans. The fans recognise what is going on a VP and that is what causes the negativity. We all hope and pray that Lerner gets it right this time, otherwise the negativity may well remain. Negativity is driven by lack of ambition and the signs of lack of ambition......
Pride of Lions
Keep taking the happy pills, Voice !!!! Seriously, well said. It could be worse, we could be owned by a bankrupt Chinaman.
Madirish
Nothing has changed. Your six-month campaign to convince us all how everything is bad about the Villa, was far too persuasive for fans to start changing their minds so quickly. Once you likened Villa's management to the Syrian regime and told us of the sort of brutality used on your daughter, thousands of Villa fans saw the truth. They are now going to take some convincing otherwise, even if we manage to get the best manager Liverpool reject.
Steve Wade
lol pride of lions. I can see what you did there!!! Come on board. All aboard the Villa Train. Only positive passengers allowed, the negative ones will only hold us back and slow us down in our quest for World domination. Get on board or be stuck at the station surrounded by like minded people happy to suck the life out of our ambition. And Madirish things could be worse. We have our health and our personal destiny is in our own hands. As for the Villa and life. There are many more important battles that people are having to face. Being a Villa fan is not a battle. It is an honour. Remember that we should enjoy supporting our club and enjoy supporting others less fortunate than ourselves. We have shown in our united support of Stan that there are more important things in life than a game of football. So where the football is involved, lets enjoy it once more. after all you never know what could happen tomoroow . . . . . . .
voiceoftheholte
Steve Wade you may misquote out of context all you like. The club have been in touch with me personally to discuss their reactions to the passions raised during their ill fated employment of the unemployable. Sometimes you have to have the courage of your convictions to right a wrong. The fact that on the final game everybody was allowed to vent their displeasure at McMuppet was an acknowledgment of this. The club got it wrong. They accept they got it wrong. Now is the time to move it forward. But hey fella, you hang on in their to the negative feelings. I am sure that they are serving you well. But as fans we shall move on and the reactions of the club will show if they have moved on as well. UTV
voiceoftheholte
But VOTH it was you who ground me down with your relentless and cogent arguments. You convinced me that my optimism was misplaced. All I am saying is that I can't just snap out of it, just because you have changed your mind. But obviously, I'll give it a try.
Steve Wade
Good article. BUT we must face facts. The club is obviously the best ever etc. but our owners are completely unproven ( looking on the brightest of sides.) ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. we've had too much talk. The board needs to get decisive and get their man and not settle for 2nd, 3rd, 53rd (whatever Eck was) best. We can't get behind nothing and we've only got half a squad and NO manager. What is there to be positive about other than our youth setup, history and ground???
Villan444
And I hope that you haven't sold out like so many others Voice just because you were overawed by getting a call from the club?? We've seen too many change their minds too easily. If you did this article after we appointed anyone like poyet, lambert, Martinez, hoddle then I'd agree with you all day and believe that the future was bright. If we get another excuse for a manager then this article is void.
Villan444
Villan444, Very eloquently put.
Steve Wade
Steve Wade :o) Villan 444 do I sound like the sort of bloke that sells out? And as for being overawed by a call from the club . . . do me a favour fella. I have had more involvment at VP than you can shake a stick at. And dont get me wrong if they were to mess up as they did with McMuppet I would be at the head of the queue venting my frustration. But as the article says, lets try and shake the negativity and bring some good vibes back to the club. And you ask the question about what is their to be positive about, well surely that was all in the article. Don't get hung up on the bad mate. Concentrate on the good and lets have a little faith that the board have learned and we can get back on the upward curve once more. Go on try it. Be positive. You know you want to :o)
voiceoftheholte
Yeah! That was a nice read! Hard to maintain the good feeling though - critical decisions round the corner. I can see all you're saying but at the same time if we sign Steve Bruce or Mick McCarthy next week I hate to say I'd struggle to even give them a chance! Re-release this article a day after the new manager is announced?
revolutionatlast
You're dead right voice, I want to be positive and wish I wasn't so cynical but as said, it's hard not to be after recent experiences of our board/s. You were immense in your anti-Eck campaign after you gave him a good chance to see what he could do and supported him until then. Knew you wouldn't change your views after a few words from the club and this is more of a rallying call but I'm incapable of being positive ( some will say I should've put a full stop here lol ) until we get the next man in!!
Villan444
VOTH I am disappointed. You personally assured me that Poyet and Zola were on their way! Well maybe not personally or assured. But you have just hit me with a wave of nostalgia! Standing on the Holte End when packed and in full voice was the second best thing to experience. I was at the Bournemouth game as well - truly wonderful. And the FA Cup replay against Arsenal when the Holte destroyed that cheating git of a goalkeeper - Bob Wilson. I don't forgive or forget easily!
Cheshire Villan
villan444. We are all Villa men (or ladies). And we all want what is best for the club. I am just trying to do my bit not to give the crappy media anymore sticks to beat us with. If we can be positive and treat there cynisism with a smile and a one fingered salute then we will all win. All aboard the Villa Positive Train. Next stop is Glory, followed by Warm Glow and then Smug Satisfaction and then back to Glory once again.
voiceoftheholte
Cheshire Villa. Men of the same breed my friend. I remember crying when Jimmy Cumbes let a back pass from Charlie Aitken through his legs on the opening day of the season against Leeds or Notts County I think.
voiceoftheholte
I was just looking for a video of that game but nothing available. There is though a brilliant peice from the Mail reporting on the Holtes influence on the game brilliant! http://www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-sport/aston-villa-fc/aston-villa-news/2012/01/26/fa-cup-flashback-aston-villa-beat-arsenal-in-1974-titanic-tussle-97319-30204275/
Cheshire Villan
Yes totally agree, and let's be positive about our fans (ourselves) not just the club, whether they are home and away stalwarts, dedicated fans of yesteryear, armchair warriors who live miles from Villa Park, or part-timers (who may go more regularly if things and they are talked up not down). Most of all let's be positive about a new manager, fair and logical. By all means have preferences, including strong preferences - but please do not be dismissive of managers who could do the trick. Degrees of positivity is the key! I could name a great manager who I know would attract a negative response which would have no basis. Too many fans would automatically press their negativity buttion, not based on any logic, just their closed mind. Yes please let's be positive!
stennyvilla
I have been saying all along that we need to stop bickering and moaning as the big dark ginger cloud has gone!! So well said voice, I'm keen to jump on the positive bus and power the mighty Villans up the table, top 8 this year and Europe the next!! I think we are getting Martinez also. UTV!!
AdzVilla11
I tried my best to be positive last season, I got told I wasn't allowed to be. I'll be positive about the next and the next and the next. No matter what anyone says, Villa is a club to be proud of but I do hope they make it a little easier this time around with the right manager and a few new players. True though, anyone trying to say ANYTHING positive about Villa last year got ripped apart. I'll repeat, I support Aston Villa NOT the manager.
The Fear
Let's hope we can support both soon Fear!
AdzVilla11
36 posts and barely a negative comment anywhere. Fear, you almost slipped into 'neg' mode but I could see you fighting it haha. It can be done. Positivity is infectious. More of the same please Villans.
voiceoftheholte
Never mind 48,000 I stood with 61,000 for a league cup semi with man utd. while we were in the 2nd div. lol as far as the negativity goes that was the football we were forced to endure hopefully it walked out the door with Mcleish. No I dont have rose tinted specs I believe we could be in for another battle this season but I am full of hope we will play better football even if we dont make the top half of the table and yes with a progressive manager it will be worth the wait. And the next time I have the odd 250 mill available I will buy the place lol. UTV

Merlin. What a night that was . . . . .oh Pat Pat Pat Pat Pat McMahon, Pat McMahon Pat McMahon, Pat Pat Pat Pat Pat McMahon, Pat McMahon Pat McMahon. We've got Andy Andy Lochead in the air in the air . . . . . . . And what about the lock out for Santos??? I got Peles autograph that night. He still talks about it . . . . .
