Tic Toc - Make Yer Mind Up Martinez Says His Boss

Dave Whelan has said, and this is reasonable to be fair to him, that he will put a time limit on Wigan manager Roberto Martinez.

He is, again only according to the press, wanted by Villa and Liverpool, or at least both would like to talk to him.

Whelan told the press;

"Roberto will be in Barbados until next Tuesday, and I will then set a seven-day deadline by which time I will expect a decision. I appreciate everyone is in limbo at the moment and there will come a time soon when we'll need an answer one way or the other. It is dragging on a bit but I only care about one thing - that is the future of Wigan Athletic. Nothing else matters."

Adding, 'It's important we sort this out properly, one way or the other, so we can move forward in preparation for the new season.'

He also told the Wigan Evening Post 'I must stress to our supporters that I am by no means resigned to losing Roberto to Liverpool or any other club. He may go, he may not go. That will be up to Roberto and I will respect his decision either way. But it is not a foregone conclusion. Not at all. Hand on heart, I still believe Roberto will be here next season.'

Whelan had already said he won`t stand in his managers way this summer. Last summer Martinez had already given his word to Whelan that he would stay and he stuck to his word. Some fans are continually saying 'no thanks, he has blown his chance last year` but isn`t a man who keeps his word exactly the right sort of character for us?

And from this morning, many of the press are now looking at Martinez as our favourite option: Press Now Looking Towards Martinez For Villa

Would love Martinez, he laid the foundations at Swansea and has done a good job at Wigan with no money and selling the best players at the end of every season.

think you are right astonsteve, from what I read he takes on a club as a proper project, this club needs one like that to fully look at where we are heading and how we get there.

Think we should get the Swansea Board to pick our next manager! Bloody marvellous - they get two of the hottest young managers, we get 2 years of rubbish.

If Martinez is allowed time at Plop he will be a great manager for them but I doubt they will give him time. They think they should be top four. Clowns. He would be better coming to Villa where he can work with our young squad, add one or two unknown stars from abroad and get the whole club moving forward. He would need time with us too but the football would be attacking and entertaining from day one. No relegation fight here. mid table in season one, top 8 thereafter. would that be enough for Plop ?

Martinez would be brilliant for us, he could stay for years and build the club the right way and to play the right way BUT I don't fancy wait around for him with this Liverpool stuff, if he's more interested in Liverpool we should push ahead with our targets and if they fall through and Martinez becomes available then great. I know Rodgers won't want to leave Swansea yet but Randy should do everything in his power to get him in, he is a class act and his methods are brilliant and at the fore front of football. So in short I'd throw everything at Rodgers, if he said no i'd go Poyet and have Di Matteo and Martinez as back ups. Bugger waiting around for Liverpool and Chelsea to make up their minds

Liverpool or the club he turned down last year......hmmm? Just cannot see RM coming to B6 sadly so next please. I think Chelsea will appoint in the next week so that will leave another Roberto available. Failing that I would go for Lambert. The thing is the longer we leave it the less options we have and we start to look desperate. C'mon Randy sort it please. UTV.

How can anyone, I repeat anyone stand here and say Martinez has done a good job at Wigan, have they been pressing for a place in Europe, have they won more games than lost or drawn them or have they struggled. Its one thing to play nice football and be successful and another to play nice football and season after season escape relegation at the death, if thats what our supporters want then we may as well have kept McLeish

Getting sick of all these over rated prem coaches! Why don't we go for a coach outside the prem like poet or klinnsman, who would look at us as a dream challenge rather than just another job!

agree mick, but then who says that the board aren't doing exactly that? kevin, you seem to have been away from VP or without sky sports for the season mate, if the aim is to play nice fooball and finish anywhere from top to bottom it would have ruled out keeping mcleish noone can call what he served up nice football

Its reported that Napoli are going to offer Di Matteo the job should it fall through at Chelsea. Looking on the bright side regardless of Martinez there is still Lambert, Poyet etc as with most happy for us to get the right man in and the statement by the Board looking for someone to restore the vibrancy is right on the money for me.

Kevinl48, before slating Wigan's 'achievement' in surviving in the prem, you should find out what you are talking about. Who are Wigan ? what is their realistic ambition ? They will never challenge for Europe. They are Wigan and have a different view of life in the top league. It is ignorant to assume that survival at Wigan means the best Martinez can aim for at a club with more resource is survival. Why do you think Plop are considering him ? By your reasoning we should only be going for Mancini because he is the only manager that won the premier league last year ?

TelfordVilla go back several years and make a comparison. Say we had a choice then between Martin O'Neil and Martinez , would you have picked Martinez over MON ? Just because Liverpool are going for him that does not mean he is the best one around, and visit their Fan sites and see what they think of it, they are praying we get him. So you like many others think that because he has done well with Wigan with very little money he will do well at Villa, well I hope you are right as we wont have any more chances to get it wrong.

At the time I would have picked O'neil but we were throwing money at getting into the top four then. With hindsight it would have been better to have got Martinez as he would have built from the bottom up with a longer term aim than O'Neil ever has. I dont see your point with that. Also the Plop fans are deluded and believe they have a right to be top four so their opinion of anyone counts for nothing. Not even 'King Kenny' was good enough for the dippers. Again I dont see your point. Finally you make the point for me. Yes he will do well at Villa with very little money because Villa's resources are greater than Wigan's. Better facilities, better prospects, Higher turnover, larger fan base, better young players and more of them. Martinez and Villa are a great fit. I only hope he has the sense to see it and the fans have the grace and courage to back him. It wont be an easy job for anyone.
