Lazy National Press - Ole DID NOT TURN VILLA DOWN

I`m going to keep banging home this point but for some it won`t sink in! The National press, surprise surprise, don`t understand and the constant misreporting will in the end make an untruth fact!

Mat Kendrick at The Birmingham Mail has a report on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer`s press conference in Norway.

Ole confirmed HE HAD NOT BEEN OFFERED ANYTHING.

My information is there are other candidates ahead of Ole in the queue. Lets hope it is all resolved fairly quickly now and we can start talking about player speculation instead! Then again, I`d rather them get it right this year rather than quickly.

"I`ve told Aston Villa I don`t want to go further in the chats". He also confirms he spoke with Randy and that the Villa owner totally understood the decision.

Ole goes on to explain having consulted with his family, they decided they didn`t want to move back to England.

That is no shame on Villa is it? The way some are talking you`d think that Randy and Paul Faulkner (CEO) had taken Ole out and shot him.

Ole is a wealthy chap, the football list reckons he has a fortune of around 10million, so it isn`t about money for him. He also has a family happy in his hometown.

"My family is the main reason why I want to stay. But there are a lot of other reasons too. I want to be loyal to Molde, I owe them that much, you have got to see the whole picture. But in the end my family was the main reason."

The Ole mania has been a bit bizarre really. I`ve been amazed at how the Villa faithful seemed to get so excited about a manager so inexperienced. If it was a Villa old boy like Martin Laursen I`d get it, but not Ole, a dyed in the wool Man Utd fan!

Hey ho! The search goes on.

If family and Molde were the real reasons, I don't see why he would've had chats with Villa in the 1st place. I hope i'm wrong, but i've got a feeling we're in for a summer of managers coming to speak to us, realising we've got no cash, the talks then going no further (repeat for all the decent managers) and then we'll be left with another terrible manager again, maybe Steve Bruce this time.....fingers crossed i'm completely wrong!
MrZeus
Glad to see OSG has come out and said it. We can forget all the hearsay beforehand. Time to move on now. No harm, no foul. Totally hope we get someone soon though.
Lee282
Yes, it's nice to have it cleared up even if the national journos can't see further than the end of their collective noses....
Pride of Lions
C'mon Fear. If it says it in the paper it must be true. They got it right about Mcleish. We hated him because he came from Small Heath, not because because of his godawful football, his abject failure to motivate the players, his dismal understanding of tactics, his appalling record and his deluded excuses. None of those mattered. Just accept what the press says. You'll feel better.
chocolate teapot
Its gonna be Martinez, no inside info but real strong gut feeling!!!!!!!
astonsteve
He has still in theory turned down the "chance" to be considered as Villa manager. So he HAS turned us down...... ;o)
nottinghamvillain
lol, Dear Mr Pedant from Nottingham... bugger orf! lol. The way the press and to be fair even some of our own fans are going on you would have thought that he got offered the job and has decided against it. My info (and it is to be fair bloody good info) is that there are others over and above him. But even if he had just decided it wasnt' right for him and that he wanted to stay in his hometown, that still wouldn't explain the panic but some or some of the rubbish being said / thrown at the board!
The Fear
I liked the fact that he thought it was well worth meeting Lerner and something along the lines of "a good contact for the future" ... who knows what that means to Villa though
tvrwhitey
I don't see the difference. he turned us down, wether we had offered him the job or not. Frame it anyway you want ... but thats the reality of it. If the press frame it as he snubbed us, then so be it. Everyone should just chill out and enjoy the summer sun. As soon as BRENDAN RODGERS is appointed manager we can all relax.

Definition of turned down : to decline, refuse, refuse to accept, rejected. He has "refused/declined/rejected" the opportunity to continue exploring working with Villa due to family reasons. Ole has TURNED VILLA DOWN due to family reasons :-) The confusion isnt over the action of turning down its what hes turned down. Papers make it sound like the turned the job down, instead he has turned down the opportunity to pursue the job.
mattyh1986
Question is IF Man united had sent a private plane for him - wud he have still stayed - for family reasons - i doubt it
tvrwhitey
Worst comment of all was made by one Paul McGrath who said/ implied that Villa were interested in Ole because he may have been niaive enough to take on a hard job with little money and that the club had been found out! I know we can all put our own view on things but this interpretation yesterday morning sounded awful to me. Truth is Ole turned down the opportunity to talk further. Maybe he did not want to be seen as being rejected - anyone thought of that?

We are not Tottenham, Arsenal or Chelski, so the national press dont give a toss about us. Liverpoo USUALLY get their managers from within their own system, so it wouldn't surprise me to see the FSW Benitez going back there seeing as he was kicked out before the new owners took over. That leaves us to pick from Lambert, Martinez, Di Matteo or Rodgers. The OGS situation was played out too publicly in Norway, as was the Martinez thing with us last year. Whelan is keeping quiet for a change, Lambert refuses to answer questions, no noises from Swansea, and Di Matteo may be a free agent in the next fortnight. Why is there so much panic because an up and coming young coach has opted to play out our approach in the media, and then look like the good guy when the billionnaire backer of his club threatens to pull the plug and he decides to stay put for family reasons. He has only left an interview process early FFS. Pat Fenlon was a top manager here in Ireland, but is struggling to get a grip on Hibs, more expectation and more pressure. Maybe, just maybe, OGS was not for us after all. It's not as if we are short of contenders for the job. Can't see RL having to go cap in hand for (no offence) Big Mick of Steve Bruce. Last season, we would have been glad to have either Lambert, Martinez, Di Matteo or Rodgers. Calm down, everyone, it could be worse.
Madirish
not sure Rodgers is in the running IF it is right he turned down Liverpool, that would surely suggest he wants to stay at Swansea a while longer applesmoke?
The Fear
My point is the press are suggesting Ole did a U-Turn or that Ole turned down the job, if not for jet plane incident and the twitter / press fever, we'd never have even heard of this link and I don't think Villa would have taken the risk on such an inexperienced manager, not after last season.

Another reason then that he might not have been right for us TVRwhitey? He is man utd through and through. Although if he was sensible he would do what Laursen is hopefully doing, get the experience first then go to his dream job when he is ready, not before he is ready/cause a disaster/get sacked?
The Fear
Yes gordonsleftboot, exactly my thoughts, have said in a previous article or forum, I forget which. He might be face saving having realised he isn't top of the list (which he isn't) to come in to Villa. Also, if he was sensible, I think he might well have realised that this is a big job to take on so early in his managerial career? One mess up at this stage of a managers career and it can end it!
The Fear
Fear - I take your point about Rodgers turning down "the chance to talk to Liverpool" - Some lazy press yourself there ;). My HOPE is that he sees Liverpool as a step too far too soon and that MAYBE he WOULD (possibly) see Villa as the right club at the right time. We are in need of that he can offer (TOP TO BOTTOM control of all footballing affairs), instilling his ethos and philosophy throughout. We have all that swansea lacks, and none of the burdened unrealistic expectations of liverpool.
applesmoke
Fear, I think your right. If it wasnt for the private jet fiasco we would all be non the wiser. But it makes you think! How many others have slipped under the radar. The dust has settled and I agree maybe the timing was not right. I think a lot of us are just concerned the board will get this wrong again , common sense should prevail but it certainly didnt last year. Lets hope Randy is doing the rounds and there are many more "informal chats" we dont know about
mattyh1986
Going to go out on a limb here - Paulo DiCanio.... He's done a great job at Seindon. He's a very intelligent guy, passionate (sometimes a little too much of I'm honest) and would want to play good football. I read his autobiography a few years back and was very impressed with his thoughts on the game. He'd instantly have the respect of the dressing room and wouldn't put up with nonsense.... Oh and he does well in claret and blue! :)
gmvillan
Two horrific typos above. Sorry!!! Shouldn't be posting from my phone!
gmvillan
Sorry villains, sounds like he didnt fancy it whatever the family excuses. I hope you get someone half decent though, I still remember when you sang happy birthday to us when you were 4-1 up.
T.H.F.Chris
He sat and thought about it and bottled it ...... lets get one thing straight, winning the Norwegian Championship is like winning League 2 ....... revamping Aston Villa is a very very different prospect, he wasn't ready and he knew it. He has conducted himself very well and so have Villa, like Fear say's, if it wasn't for 'plane spotters' we wouldn't have been any wiser.
astonmilan
T.H.F.Chris ............. that game was incredible ... love going to WHL whatever the outcome (except this season !!!).
astonmilan
gmvillan ..... spot on, Di Canio would be worth a punt.
astonmilan
All. Watch the OGS videos on youtube. They were obviously done for Man U tv, and have a Utd bias, but he talks about his family and living in his hometown. Question, if you were financially secure for life, would you uproot your young family from such an idyllic place, to move to Birmingham. Scene of race riots in the past, and looting more recently. Miles from a beautiful fjord, maybe near to a dirty canal. He was obviously asked if he was interested, he came over at Randy's expense for a chat, and after discussion with his wife, decided to stay where he is. This is a sensible young man, who has always been a model professional, and he has made a considered decision. Fair play to him, and I wish him well. So who shall we have? I look at all the candidates banded about and few fill me with any excitement. I would love to see Stuart Pearce at the Villa, but that is unlikely......so for me I would go for Kevin MacDonald. Brilliantly successful with the reserve team, the players choice, and is now ready to make the step up. Not the exciting appointment that some would like, but probably the best appointment we can make. I would certainly bet that he is setting the benchmark with Lerner and Faulkner.
2big4seatswannastand
doubt it very much 2big. Macdonald proved before GH took over that he can't / doesn't want to handle the top job. He does ok with the reserves where there is no pressure and there are no egos to manage, but no way should Randy even consider him.
AVbornandbred
I think the thing about OGS was it was at last a message from the board that they "get" the fact that the entertainment on offer last season was ***** poor. OGS was someone who talked about turning defences, playing one twos and attacking instead of tracking back and getting 11 men behind the ball. As long as we get a manager who thinks a bit more like that we'll no doubt be excited again. Oh and maybe tries practicing a corner every once in a while ;-)
Matt B
The reason Villa fans got excited about OGS as manager is we have just had 12 months of Mcleishes football 2 months ago I would have got excited tallking about Mcarthy or Bruce as manager ! simples.
