Shay Not A Given For Ireland & QPR Speculation

Shay Given may be absent from the Republic's friendly against Bosnia after picking up a knee injury in training.

A spokesman for the FAI told our Official Site:

'Shay picked up a minor knee injury in training. After undergoing a scan, it was concluded that Shay should sit out training for the next few days for precautionary measures.'

As for the QPR speculation. A newspaper that really should know better last night published a totally unsubstantiated claim that due to Paddy Kenny not yet being offered a new contract, it was basically a nailed on certainty that Given's former boss Mark Hughes would be in for the player, especially with the 'uncertainty' surrounding Villa Park at the moment.

I won't provide a link, I really wouldn't waste your time looking for extra details.

It's the standard manager player link again, totally ignoring the fact he has 4 years on his contract left, Guzan is moving on, and we all know Shay was the Player of the Season for us (with Ireland a close second in my humble).

Of all the players who might move on this summer, I'd bet Shay won't be one of them!

it wouldnt be the end of my world if Given went, a good shot stopper but not big enough to come for crosses and therefore we defend every corner in our own 6 yard box

Have to agree with you madforit, but he's not going anywhere.

it really wouldnt surprise me to see him sold. this generates a fee and also gets another big earner off the wage bill, therefore perhaps offering a new manager a bit of movement in the summer, but i can see more big name departures and small replacements, until the big earners are off the wage bill and the books and balanced to the boards satisfaction
oxfordspur
Have to disagree with you oxfordspur; I think there'll be some more departures, and they may have been big names, but hardly so anymore (dunne, collins etc)... I also don't think we'll spend only a few pennies - I think after last season, the chairman must know that we have to spend some money or run serious risk of relegation. I'm not saying another Darren Bent signing, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if we end up spending 25-30 million this summer.
