Bent Misses Euros BUT Pledges Allegiance To Villa

Darren Bent hasn`t been selected for the Euro`s. Not a major surprise really, he`s not been fit to play for 19 or so games. Shame for him but hopefully he can bounce back and be fully fit in a Villa shirt for next season.

The squad:

Bent on ball
Hart, Green, Ruddy, Johnson, Jones, Terry, Lescott, Cahill, Cole, Baines, Walcott, Downing, Chamberlain, Gerrard, Barry, Lampard, Parker, Young, Milner, Defoe, Rooney, Welbeck Carroll. Back-Up: Butland, Jagielka, Henderson, Johnson, Sturridge.

Bent told www.avfc.co.uk 'I am determined to come back stronger like I have the previous two times I have missed out. This won't stop me or deter me. I now look to the World Cup in two years and will try to be involved in that one. I want to put myself in contention again."

Adding, happily, 'My total focus is on Villa next season now. I am confident we will improve and have a much better season. The previous one was obviously not great but this is a massive club and we have to make sure that was just a blip. We need to get behind the new manager when he comes in and put all our efforts into the new campaign.'

He also told Mat Kendrick @ The Birmingham Mail that players need to take some responsibility for last season and that it is always the managers that take the brunt.

"People have asked if I was mis-sold the dream when I signed and if I`m honest I didn`t think Ashley Young and Stewart Downing would leave in the same summer. But I signed for Aston Villa because I wanted to be here and I still do".

He also says fairly clearly that he had links last January and didn`t want them and that nor does he now.

"It`s not been a great season but this is a massive club and we`ve got to make sure it is a blip that doesn`t happen again. It is still a time of transition and we need to do our best to get behind the new manager."

All down to who comes in now really isn`t it? Who knows, some of the players who haven`t quite worked out yet might get a fresh lease of life and of course, we do have a crop of nice youth players breaking through as well.

Honest answers about Ash and Judas though, fair play to him. Still think he'll be off. If we could have held on to that pair for another year and really seen the best of him, could have been a very different season.

just seen, Bent seems to have had a lot to say recently. He is now partly blaming the players for the state of affairs at the moment. I assume that he's not including himself in this blame game as he's been injured in the most pathetic way with no-one near him. Starting to dislike him more and more for his 1 trick pony styles and thick as 5h1t comments. If only we could get £20 mil for him and give that to the new manager to invest. For the record, would take ANY of those managers in the list except Di Matteo and maybe Laursen (only as he's too inexperienced.)

Its a fact our players have been shocking villan444 - i don't get your point? mcliesh the main core of the problem of course but still the players don't have too much defence. bent is the best striker we have had in a long time and we as a club haven't utilised him at all yet. i rate bent and think he must stay

I am very certain that we would have been safe much earlier if we had in in the side. I do agree it is unlikely someone would give 24 mil for him. He one be one of the players that the new manager will want to build his team around if he does stay. COTVABU

bit harsh 444. And yes, he takes his share as well I'm sure. He missed a good few but still netted 10 (?) before injury.

Absolutely sick for Benty not making Euros Hodgeson's making a giant mistake not bringing him along. Defoe will flop mark my words. At least he wil be fresh for next season as Fear said though. Would hate to not have him for half the season again.

True that the same players that were top 6 under MON have been part of a bottom 5 finish under Eck 87. Only 1 person to blame IMHO and thankfully he's gone. It's commonly known that you've got to be greedyish to get your share of the goals as a striker but, I always get an undertone from Bent that he's out for himself too much. Most are these days in fairness to him and maybe I'm reading more into it than I should but, he can't play up front effectively with anyone else, he can't pass, holdup, create, cross, flick-on to a fellow teammate so just seems uselessly selfish. In fact he can't header, dribble, tackle or anything apart from finish!!! Now that we're going to have a new vibrant young manager, are we going to build a team around him at the grand old age of 28 when a lot of managers don't rate him for his 1 ability. In fairness, everyone knows that he's a very very good finisher anywhere closer than 12 yards, but we can't play him every week if we want to change tactics to play in certain formations as he doesn't fit in unless we all play to his 1 and only strength!!! Eck thought that you just play him up front on his own and wait for the goals to come. Everyone else knows that it's not that simple. GH had a plan set up and he would've been effective but will the new man think the same??? Eck admitted that he was the 1st name on the teamsheet for him but that limits everything. Sell and reinvest, you'd never see him score a curler from outside the box like Wiemann did, (mainly because he never leaves the box) or a scrambled goal like his first for the club (mainly because he's normally got his head in his hands after he's missed and isn't looking where the ball has gone and wouldn't put his head or body where it hurts.)
