Whelan Won't Block Martinez

Dave Whelan has confirmed on Sky Sports that although there has been no approach from Villa, they won't stand in his way this summer.

'I am not aware of any approach coming from Aston Villa or any other club. If anybody approaches him, he will tell me because he knows that if I feel the club is right, and he feels the club is right for him, I will let him go and will back him to the hilt.'

'Roberto and I have a complete understanding where we trust each other implicitly. We have a working relationship that is very upfront, open and honest.

'If anything comes up Roberto will see me and I will be the first to know.'

Roberto is also being linked to Liverpool....

Their relationship has changed after whelan slagged him off a few months ago. I think he would say yes this time.

Whelan hasn't changed his stance that much if I remember correctly.... it was Martinez who was true to Wigan and refused our approach to even interview him.

I really can't see why people are so infatuated with Martinez. His really is really not all that impressive. He has had to fight relegation 3 years in a row at Wigan and has failed to build on previous years. More than that, Martinez represents a risk if appointed that Villa would be in another relegation fight. This would come at a time when the club REALLY shouldn't be taking risks. In contrast, if appointed, Paul Lambert would all but guarantee Villa finishing in the top ten if his record is anything to go by. He has had increased success at every club he has managed and Villa will be the best squad he has ever taken control of. Sorry but I can't see Martinez as being a success at Villa despite his attractive football.

I don't know if its just me, but I don't get all this hype around Martinez - its all "Emperor's New Clothes" to me. He is in the relegation mix every year, and frankly, I've had enough of that for a lifetime. Considering the shambles McMuppet has left us in, it will take an experienced and skilled manager to sort out this mess. I just don't see Martinez being capable of that - Wigan flounder every season, and he only seems to get his act together and get them playing around March - and the state we are in, we need to get things back on an even keel much earlier than that.

Would much prefer Lambert or AVB (unlikely I know). Someone is having a laugh with this Mick McCarthy nonsense. (Worryingly I said the same thing about McLeish this time last year!).

If we get McCarthy then it's another ***** season ahead of us,not premier league material and just as bad as Mcleish. The feeling of joy at Mcleish leaving is now being turned to dread at the thought of bringing in the same manager but with a different name.

I will take no notice whatsoever of the media claiming Mcarthy to be next Villa manager, Faulkner has already said today they are looking for a manager to grow with this club so expect a younger manager like Martinez Lambert Villas Boas, Martinez would get my full backing if he was appointed as any new manager would it will be nice to see Villa attacking teams again at VP again can't wait ;)

villa4life87 - Wouldn't worry about McCarthy too much I'm pretty sure the Executives have Lerned (ha see what I did there?) their lesson. Besides now the papers are starting to report that his likelyhood is going down. BigFatRon - Ha yes I hope it's not just us we need success now not in March!

Not convined by Martinez. If he is so good, then why do his teams only play for two months of every season? Wigan were dire up until March or thereabouts.

You are forgetting its WIGAN he has been managing, to do what he has done with them has been fantastic, the methods, work ethic and team spirit he has installed is exactly what we need. Possession attacking football, the stuff we'd love to see at Villa Park, more money to get better players and we will be up there while looking good. Also signing players like Valencia for peanuts and selling him for loads shows he looks far and wide for class players. Martinez would be brilliant, we are the next step up for him. He will need time to rebuild thus mess though and we should all get 100% behind him. Young, hungry with a bright future, go get him ASAP Randy

everyone makes mistakes but intelligent people learn from them. i think randy is an intelligent guy - he won't make the same mistake again. i reckon he will listen to us more this time. if mccarthy is not good enough for wolves, he wont be coming to villa. its as simple as that. 'when faulkner talks of 'vibrant' manager, lambert came to mind. i wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if it were martinez but lambert or poyet for me

AdzVilla11 - Yes mate I realize it's Wigan but there is still quality within the side like Rodillega, Diame, Di Santo, Moses, etc. They had a better side than both Swansea and Norwich and if Martinez is so great why wasn't Wigan finishing above them? Because he's not as good of a manager. If he had promoted Wigan and then survived in the way he did it would be a different story but as it stands he has been in a relegation battle his whole time at the club and has never even had a good showing in cup competitions. Even McDraw could do that! Sorry Adz he's just not good enough for Villa no matter how pretty his football is.

I value your points mate but don't agree with them all, we will see I guess!! At least we are talking new manager which is exciting. I still think Martinez would do very well but if we got Lambert or Rodgers I'd be equally as happy. UTV!!

Name the last Villa manager to beat Man Ure, Chelsea, Arsenal, L'plop, Newcastle and Stoke all in a few weeks ? I dont think villa have EVER gone on a run like that. Certainly not in my 50 years. Remember Wigan are the smallest club in the Prem, smaller than Norwich and Swansea and have to sell each year just to survive. They have no right to be in the Prem really yet this guy has kept them up. If we get him I believe Wigan will sink without trace. However I would be very happy with Lambert or Rodgers if not Martinez.
