Young Hungry Dynamic? Managers Linked To Villa

Roberto Martinez asked on BBC Sport (video) to the link to Villa.

James Nursey at The Mirror says that Villa will look at Wigan manager Roberto Martinez again and also have an interest in Norwich manager Paul Lambert.

For 100% sure he is right that they want to bring in a young, hungry manager!

I disagree with James on the link for QPR manager Mark Hughes. I believe with good reason that is a non starter.

The ITV news site says that Randy Lerner is flying in today to begin the search for our new manager.

Mat Kendrick at The Birmingham Mail links Lambert and Martinez and also says that Brendan Rogers from Swansea could be looked at. Must admit, if that is the case, I`d go Martinez as he started the 'revolution` at Swansea and could be a decent, young, long term manager for us.

Mat also says that Alan Curbishley and Kevin MacDonald might be looked at again as they were when MON left.

Oh and also the same one that I`ve heard a few times, Roberto Di Matteo could be considered if Chelsea don`t take him on permanently. I believe Mat to be wrong in the possible link to ex-Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.

Brighton coach Gus Poyet is also mentioned. Nice rumour a few weeks ago by voiceoftheholte said if Poyet came, he`d bring Gianfranco Zola.

West London also link us to Mark Hughes, again, I believe totally wide of the mark (see what I did there?!) and why would we really?

there are potentially some truly outstanding managers on that list, but I wonder how much the possible lack of money available will play a part in the decisions of some of these managers, who will perhaps feel that with another good season and even Prem stability in the cases of Lambert and Rodgers will put them in very strong positions to move to a club that has money and at least the same potential size and history that Villa undoubtedly have.
Before we get carried away on the manager merry go round, does anyone remember what Alan Pardew was doing this time last year? Worth thinking about that before any candidate is dismissed out of hand
Time flies, what Pardew was doing in November 2010!!
There isn't a lack of money, they were balancing wages etc, even more wages now off the list with Bosmans, now they have re-grouped and will provide funds. There are the fair play rules now to follow.
The Fear
i would be happy with either. And yes fear, lets not forget they gave the previous guy 20 million to spend. Hardly peanuts. I think the next guy will have a decent budget.
With the academy recruits coming through, the fair play rules will actually suit us.
Young and hungry? We're probably trying to get Jonathan Antoine...
My preferences would be: 1. Lambert 2. Martinez 3. Villas-Boas 4. Rodgers 5. Poyet. Any of those managers would make me a happy Villan.
i have no idea who will be the new manager.
but i'm happy that other bloke has gone.
AVB has class written all over it. It's in his name after all. Lambert has now proven to be a proven premiership manager, albeit just for one season.

I'm all for a young manager and a long term project. I'm not sure about Martinez though - averaging 40 points a season after three years in the Prem and a win % of 27. Concedes a lot of goals for all the nice football. Very similar stats to AMc, but flirts with relegation in a more entertaining way. More to the point I don't think he's strong enough to get what he wants from a bigger, bolshier squad. I have a feeling that Lambert is.
Lambert wont leave Norwich as we dont have money to spend, Martinez wont leave wigan because we dont have money to spend, Rodgers wont leave swansea because we dont have money to spend. All of these Managers would want money to take Villa charging back up the league like we as fans want. Villa is not a better option right now than where they are currently employed!! I'm beginning to get a little worried about this....
lol nottinghamvillain, we spent £20 M in the summer, £24M the january before and only didn't spend the previous summer because of extenuating circumstances. The club backed MON to the hilt and whilst we might not see the same level of profligacy again, there has always been money to spend we just needed to reduce the wage bill which has now been done.
to me learners statement suggest he will be giving enough money to spend to the manager he wants in. have a feeling he will be ruthless about getting martinez into the side. who knows tho... would love AVB tbh
Lerner will get who he wants. This job is still bigger than Swansea, Wigan, Norwich and most of the others. With some resources behind the new man and following last season, the only way is up. The best time for an ambitious manager to take over this club is now - just the same way MON did. But whoever we get he will need time and patience from the fans and owner. Lerner worries me because he bows to pressure: dropped McLaren, sacked McLeish. OK McLeish had to go BUT I hope the board grows some brass balls during the Summer, chooses a course of action and sticks to it. Otherwise we will be a great job for managers seeking 3 years wages for 1 years work. Wouldn't mind some of that myself.
Yes, I think Lerner will be a bit looser with the purse strings with a decent manager coming in. Surely he isn't stupid enough to think he can get a decent manager and get this "squad" high enough up the league to appease us fans without budgeting for new players. I must admit, it wasn't all Idiots fault (only about 95%) the fact remains our squad isn't good enough and needs strengthening badly. Money is going to be needed otherwise we'll be flirting with relegation again, but in a more attractive way.
Pride of Lions
3 years of success with MON - houlier didn't do too bad considering the circumstance and he would have got us decent this season no doubt.. he made one mistake and its clear he wants us back in 6th - i think money is going to be spent again
^ Houllier was awful, it was the much maligned Garry MacAllister who saved our season after GH got ill
Aaaaaaah it's the sort of debate refreshing!! Love it. Gordon your best post yet mate
get in avb - worth a go but could be pricey after his chelsea stint
Listen to Fear, he says how it is we have cut the wages a bit more down also there will be money available but also remember these new FFP rules will affect every club and some clubs will have to chop there wages down even more than us drastically whereas Villa have at least had a head start in doing this wage restruction, one last thing Lets not put oursleves down because of a bad season and the drama we have endured at Villa, we are still a top 6 or 7 club with our income and turnover and fanbase great history so Lambert IMO will not get a bigger club than Villa even if Spurs were interested they are no bigger than us!
RODGERS. He would have everything he wants at villa. the stature of the club and the facilities should get him excited. The potential to really build something special. Something that Swansea just couldn't attain. (no offence). For me he has a better philosophy than lambert and a stronger personality than martinez. His football speaks for itself. Also the ability to pick a player - Vorm, Graham, Dyer, Williams and Allen. Come on Randy, Brendan Rogers is class through and through.
I believe that we have everything we need to try and lure in a fairly big manager like AVB. If you think that between them Mcleish and Houllier spent what, at least £45million? in only 2 seasons. If we went after a big manager, making it clear to them how much our managers have been backed in the past, it would go a long way to convincing them. The amount we pay in wages also suggests we're one of the bigger clubs in the league, as we're paying much more than many other teams. Then our team and the resources available aren't a bad foundation for a new manager coming in, our facilities too. I feel we've got enough about us to mean that somebody like AVB isn't an unrealistic target. I guess he'd cost more, it all depends on how much Randy's looking to impress us i guess! haha. You don't know until you try and all that..
Oh Dek, when I first read your post... Jonathan... I thought 'my chance has come at last', but you ruined it with the surname!!!!!!!
