Season Awards Deliver A Few Shocks

With thanks to P.Avfc for his updates from his inside men at the Awards ceremony!

Yes it's that time of year again where the annual awards are handed out to the best and the brightest associated with our fine club.

The shock entry this year was Relegator of the Year, but with the days of political correctness gone mad, the club have allowed every single fan to select their favourite for that and awards won't be handed out for fear of upsetting or breaching somebodies human rights. Life is bad enough for Theresa May afterall.

Okay so onto the awards:

Supporters' Player of the Year -

Ireland in Stan t-shirt

Roll up Stephen Ireland. Who'd have thunk the turnaround from his season under Houllier. Okay he hasn't torn any trees up but his form has been far improved and when we get strikers who'll move towards the goal and beyond defenders maybe his passes will come off better!

All that said, for me it's a Given it should've been Shay!

Supporters' Young Player of the Year -

forum

Certainly making a name for himself now and possibly deserved, but other youngsters have turned out more and played a bigger part and easily could've been in contention for this. Then again the Stoke goal no doubt won him a few extra votes here.

Speaking of which...

Goal of the Season -

Yup you guessed it, the sublime little strike beat off all the other 9 competitors for this prize. Hard to disagree, and whilst we may have only scored 12 all season, the top ten did contain some beauties.

Players' Player of the Year -

Petrov clapping

No brainer really eh. Was always going to be Capitan Stan.

Old Stars Player of the Year-

forum

Excellent progress through the staff ranks and now a valued member of the first team coaching staff, whilst still taking a good interest the youngsters - especially those in the first team. Chosen by the Aston Villa Former Players Association.

Goal Celebration of the Year -

forum

At 11.40pm, maybe this one will make sense in the morning I have a soon to be warm bed waiting.

UPDATE - this was awarded for Lichaj's chicken noodle soup dance!

I believe that is the lot this year, but if not, I'll update tomorrow.

Bit baffled with the Stephen Ireland one to be honest. Not sure if it was supporters player of the year or just player of the year...Like you said, more details from the Villa site in the morning. All other awards are fair, not sure with the Lichaj one like you said Mike, can't remember any celebrations this year to be honest, they have been limited!

Shocked that Ireland one. Should have been Given and I wouldn't want to take it away from Weiman but I had Herd for his.
VILLA 4 LIFE
Young player should have gone to Chris herd I think...

I think I got the "full house"

I'd have gone for Petrov. Villa have been awful at defending set pieces this year and Given.should have attacked a lot more of the corners. As a keeper these days if you can't get the ball the refs just give a foul anyway. Mcleish should have told him that though.

Givens save last week was topnotch though. Ireland has scored few and influenced little. Improved on last year though. Petrov for me though.

Petrov and Given streets ahead of Ireland in terms of overall contribution. Herd as well for that matter. Weimann's win over Herd only proves once again that football is all about goals. Not many categories there for awards; where was the award for the player least likely to turn up? Least likely to score, most missed passes of the season, headless chicken award? Fear: time for our own awards maybe?

Interesting how different opinions can be. I totally agree with Ireland, class above anyone else on the pitch and more often than not a contender for motm. Given is a close second but heroic saves aside his distribution and command of his box haven't been as good as they might have been. Love weiman but herd should've had young player sewn up.
AVbornandbred
Kean should have won - he kept us up with his goals against Wolves.
RiF
chris herd gets my vote for supporters player. He has been the only one going all out every game.
lerneravfc
Personally wouldn't award Given a thing. Great save against the Albion and in all fairness he is a great shot stopper, but his total lack of command of the box is one of the reasons we have conceded more goals from within the 6 yard box than almost any other team this season. Player of the season - Stan. Players player - Stan. Goal of the season - Stan (Vs Bluescouse). Young player - Chris Herd. Celebration of the season - Villa Fans when Bolton scored their second and we all realised as one, that this was the ultimate moment to ensure McMuppets reign at VP was effectively over.

Should do a Vital Villa Awards!

Few points here .. glad Given didn't win it .... our winners usually leave !!!! Also why two games before end of season ... may someone not be here just after the end of the season ??? Finally best wishes to Stan ... get well soon.
