Ashley Young - To Dive Or Not To Dive?

Some say a penalty AND a dive (ie it was a pen but the theatrics did him no favours) others are screaming diving cheat!

Even Sir Alex Chewalot said he played for the penalty and made a meal of going down.

I think if he'd just gone down normally on the first part of the challenge, he'd have still had a good shout, as did Ray Wilkins and Dwight Yorke, the second leg 'looking' to make contact though, that is pure cheating surely?

My biggest irritation is how "sensible" McLeish was. For the sake of fighting against these divers, someone has to have the guts to say "YOU CHEATED" and take the consequences of an FA trial.

Not sure? Watch what he does with his left foot ....... I wont swear as it wont change the appaling grovelish pathetic excuse of a ref.~ Mr Ferguson must have been dwill all 12 united players.

We all know what Ash is like, however at Villa he used to only get free kicks, he was usually booked for diving in the box so moving to Utd has helped him there. I wish people would focus more on Huttons attempt to challenge him before Ash got in the box, how can you miss a tackle by about 2 metres???

It was a penalty, but Young dived theatrically and is therefore a class...and the same goes for any teams players, including Villa, if they do this sort of thing.

As stated by Lerner he's done it for years, much to my embarrassment. I was happy he left. Nice of him to celebrate the penalty going in as well. I'm beginning to dislike him as much as I dislike Downing

9.5, 9.5, 10.0, 9.5, 10.0. Tom Daley would be proud to have Young as a partner. We knew he'd do that, though, didn't we??

Disgraceful dive. It's bad enough that he had the gaul to do it at all but against the team that made him the player he is! I don't want city to win the league but it's cheats like Young that ake me wish United would fail.

he trails his left leg into Clark and is going down before contact...

How funny would it be if next time we play utd all the fans have a board like they do at the cricket with the 4/6 on either side. We could have a 9 and a 5 board and all hold them up every time he goes down!! That would at least make it a bit funnier

It looks even worse from that angle, there is no doubt his leg is looking for Clark rather than the other way round. There is contact because ash initiated it and was certainly not enough to bring him down. Would have been interesting to see the decision if he had still been wearing claret and blue playing at old trafford wouldnt it??!! The dive was a disgrace, I got fed up of him trying it on when he was with us - there's no need when you have beaten the defender! Glad we don't have that cheat in our side anymore. Just play the game son, you're getting as bad as Suarez!

Chelt Villan good idea. Just hope he repeats it against Citeh - two of the bigger clubs playing and so ref not so sure who to support - and Young gets sent off for simulation. Didn't we know in advance he would do this?

Cheating scumbag. Hope he breaks a leg now he has found a career in theatrics. And thank you Alan Hutton for going straight through him.

Same old Ashley, always cheating. I didn't like it when he did it playing for us. Why not beat the man and score a great goal. He has the skill to be one of the best but his reputation is of one of a cheat. People saying he needs to be careful not to get himself a reputation as a diver.... Erm, too late!

Actually, having just watched it again he he absolutely no intention of ever keeping the ball. Just watch where the ball goes. He's given up caring about the all as son as he gets into the box. God I hate him.

He doesn't follow the direction of the ball, he deliberately runs into the defender and makes sure he collides and goes down, last time he was at VP he was clapped, that cheating ensures that he'll be getting dogs abuse next time he's at VP.

Absolute disgrace. I saw the peanktythen had to leave to travel for a meeting today. Listened to the radio (BBC and TalkSport) and to a man they said that it wasn't a penalty. In fact one said that he must not have much confidence in his own ability if he feels the need to do that.

Somebody attach a snorkel to Ashley's head, pronto! He'll be able to get a job playing the sub in the remake of 'Above us the Waves'. Maybe the Govt/MoD can buy him as the solution to their Trident/'Astute' class submarine financial problems.

He was going down before the contact. Regardless of whether it was a pen or not, we were pathetic, set up to defend and had no imagination when we countered. Theonly thing that will save us this season is other teams results.

I have to confess - personally i think it is a penalty :( Yes he certainly 'overcooked' it, and he definitely played for it, but at the end of the day there was some contact. I've seen them not given though too. We have to ask ourselves, if the shoe was on the other foot - we'd be saying it was a stone wall pen ;)

Why so supprised ? In one of his last two years with us didnt he win the title most fouled player in the premiership over a season ? He has always been a diver its just now hes doing it for Man Utd. his dives have taken on a bit of flair lol.Should imagine after seeing the Wigan & Villa games referees are going to catch on now.

OK I am not saying this as a Villa fan but as some one with a love for the game. That was the most pathetic dive I have ever seen, infact I felt it was so badly done to react the way he did just insulted the refs intelligence. Its simple, not a pen. Now in future cases such as this should be analysised but a judging panel and depending on their findings lead to match bans. I know that sounds harsh but it is helping destroy the game.
