Alex McLeish has said he was delighted with the 'focus, application and professionalism' of the squad today in the game against Liverpool.
Speaking to the Official Site after returning from Scouseland, the gaffer said that this result could be our springboard to finishing the season on a high and putting a few smiles back on faces:
'I was really proud of them, I was hoping they could give me a performance. I said regardless of the result at least give me a performance and we took a deserved lead. In the second half we had to withstand a battering ram, the boys lost the goal near the death but they hung on. The players stood firm, and I was proud of them. All the young players in that team were lionhearts in the Villa tradition. It was a huge result, a fantastic one for us. It would be great to hang on but there's no way I can criticise any players in that dressing room. They were all heroes and I hope this can take us forward.'
Today was really all about the youngsters, but McLeish shared his praise around - especially for those not feeling their best or carrying knocks.
'A couple came off their sick beds - Andi Weimann had an ankle injury last week while Gary Gardner was on the sick bed, he's been off with a virus. It was great to see Samir come off the bench too, that's another plus for the Academy. Nathan was immense and Barry has had a couple of cracking games. James was colossal, he led by example. Shay did his bit. Alan was terrific and Eric carried on the good work from Chelsea. Stevie ran tirelessly in midfield and we have to give a special mention to Stevie Warnock who played in a different position.'
Anybody left out? I don't normally like quoting that much text, but it's rare that McLeish beams goodwill around so I'm making the most of it!
To make up for it, have a link to the match thread on the forum Click Here and if that doesn't help have a picture of Shay Given pointing.
