McLeish Hails Lionheart Heroes

McLeish Hails Lionheart Heroes

Alex McLeish has said he was delighted with the 'focus, application and professionalism' of the squad today in the game against Liverpool.

Speaking to the Official Site after returning from Scouseland, the gaffer said that this result could be our springboard to finishing the season on a high and putting a few smiles back on faces:

'I was really proud of them, I was hoping they could give me a performance. I said regardless of the result at least give me a performance and we took a deserved lead. In the second half we had to withstand a battering ram, the boys lost the goal near the death but they hung on. The players stood firm, and I was proud of them. All the young players in that team were lionhearts in the Villa tradition. It was a huge result, a fantastic one for us. It would be great to hang on but there's no way I can criticise any players in that dressing room. They were all heroes and I hope this can take us forward.'

Today was really all about the youngsters, but McLeish shared his praise around - especially for those not feeling their best or carrying knocks.

'A couple came off their sick beds - Andi Weimann had an ankle injury last week while Gary Gardner was on the sick bed, he's been off with a virus. It was great to see Samir come off the bench too, that's another plus for the Academy. Nathan was immense and Barry has had a couple of cracking games. James was colossal, he led by example. Shay did his bit. Alan was terrific and Eric carried on the good work from Chelsea. Stevie ran tirelessly in midfield and we have to give a special mention to Stevie Warnock who played in a different position.'

Anybody left out? I don't normally like quoting that much text, but it's rare that McLeish beams goodwill around so I'm making the most of it!

To make up for it, have a link to the match thread on the forum Click Here and if that doesn't help have a picture of Shay Given pointing.

given made a bloody good save from that suarez rebound. collins stretched clearance was also a highlight. but i felt that we were very poor. when we attacked we looked good(ie the goal). we can attack, mcleish is just not making full use of the talent infront of him

"I said regardless of the result at least give me a performance and we took a deserved lead." FFS, Scousers were on their worst run since 1925 and Eck's teamtalk was all "don't embarrass yourselves, you won't win but I love getting paid loadsamoney for poncing about on the sidelines and making comical ali look like he's talking sense when talking to the press so try not to get me the sack."

Villa444 don't you ever give up? Aren't you bored churning out the same line day after day? Credit to the players, especially the youngers ones, for the fight they showed. Thank goodness they played and not some of out @we can turn everything into a negative' supporters.

Gordonsleftboot - I find it absolutely hilarious that all during the week it was we are gonna get raped - we are gonna end Liverpools run - we are this we are that - now suddenly AFTER the event it seems that Liverpool are sh_ite and all the other stuff coming out. I'm in no way a fan of Eck as a manager BUT regardless of the reasons why he played the young guns and regardless of what he said before the match - we got a credible draw - I don't give a flying fig if Wigan were unlucky - who cares I don't. All these so called "experts" are allowed to be defeatist BEFORE and AFTER the event but it's ok to have a go at the manager even after they were proved wrong (again). Watched the game with a Manu and Liverpool fan and they sound more positive than our so called fans (and they HAVE watched Villa a few times). I get accused of things - but seems that no matter what - before the game it's negative and after the game it's negative. It's not perfect but the positives this time round are that our youngsters got a game that was a pressure game under thier belt and came out commendably - but that I suppose matters not a jot - we should have won becuase Liverpool are crap - but they have had a few less draws thane we have! Just cos Wigan beat them doesn't mean we all should beat them. Swansea couldn't beat us but beat Arsenal and Man City. That's it back into lurk mode as I am so fed up of the constant same record - nothing is gonna change manager wise so live with iot - back the team then in the close season get off your ar*ses and protest to your hearts content against Lerner and anyone else and demand change.

Huzzah! We drew against the team in 9th, how could I have been so wrong about the man. Where shall we erect the statue?

Gordon, your broken record isn't even correct. At least my broken record is for the good of the club. You cannot honestly say that you want Eck as manager unless you have an ulterior motive. When he's gone my moaning will stop I assure you. I don't go on for the sake of it.
