Transfer Talk: Guzan Leaving? Hearts Keeper In?

Transfer talk is in short supply at the moment, however one snippet by James Nursey in The Mirror has the link we talked about the other day (see player quotes: Click Here ) for Hearts keeper Marian Kello.

This article by James has quotes from McLeish who seems resigned to losing Guzan.

To be fair, why wouldn`t Guzan move on? He did well whilst Given was injured then got dropped straight away and, to put it bluntly, Villa is not a happy place to be right now.

McLeish said: 'We have looked at goal-keeping situations and potential No.2s in case Brad decides to leave us. Kello is in dispute with Hearts at the moment. We will try and take goalkeepers on trial first and foremost if Brad tells us he doesn't want to stay. But we'd like to keep Brad. He proved coming into the team this season he showed he can be a great goalkeeper.'

Proved he can be great and then is dropped instantly. Difficult one with keepers isn`t it? Given is a great keeper, should he automatically walk straight back into the team though? Our poll when we asked back in January was split:

Shay Given straight back in 48%
Brad Guzan has earnt right to stay in 48%
Return Given for FA Cup then decide 3%
Undecided 1%

Tough one, Brad did brill when Shay was out injured, but there is only one goalkeeping position. If Brad does go, I wish him all the best. Any good at CB Brad?

I think I will have to go against popular opinion on Shay Given. First and foremeost he is a wonderful shot stopper, has great reflexes and very rarely makes elementary errors. However I believe he is one of the reasons for our poor performance from set pieces. He simply doesn't command his box. Many goals are from within the 6 yard box. Most fans only blame a keeper when they have dropped an obvious clanger, and Shay doesnt do this very often at all. But I would rather have a keeper who dropped 5 clangers but prevented half of the set pieces finishing up in the back of the net. Guzan proved up at Stoke he is learning from his previous weaknesses. Unfortunately with Given on a 5 year contract and reportedly our highest earner, McMuppet was never going to leave his signing out. The really bad news is that another club is going to get him on a free after the years we have spent getting him to the right standard. Guzan should have been keeper as soon as Brad moved on. The club should have invested in an understudy for him and used the £3.5 transfer fee and the £18m in wages elsewhere in the team.

I'm with you VotH, I've been concerned about Given's command of the box for sometime now. Unfortunately when it came to little Brad I really don't think we had much choice, it would have been a huge risk to go with him as our first choice keeper. Whether Given on a 5 year deal was right alternative, however, is another thing. Sadly as it is now, we're paying Brad a ridiculous £20k a week so he has to go. From what I've heard, Kello could be a great understudy.

Not sure we need an understudy? Think we may need a bigger, more imposing keeper with an ability to command his box. I can't think of one succesful team in the modern era (Premier League years) that has had a keeper who doesn't command his defence and his box.
