McLeish - We Should've Shared The Spoils

Alex McLeish felt today that we saw an inspired performance from the Villa lads, on what he describes as an emotional day.

Speaking to the Official Site Alex said all the players were motivated by Stan's visit to the dressing room pre game, and he thanked the fans for their response to Stan and the team throughout the game:

'Stan was with all the boys and they weren't quite sure whether to applaud, cry or hug, but he shook everybody's hand and everybody embraced him, it was great to see him.'

As for the game itself - packed out by a number of potential debutants and youngsters - Alex added:

'I felt it was a travesty that we didn't get anything out of the game, we are very disappointed, but the show of support for Stan and the team today was fantastic. I think that was good evidence for me to see how they did on the big stage, I've got to say the young players came in and did really well against a very strong Chelsea team. I don't think they were made to look second best the whole game. To come back from 2-0 was fantastic and I'm proud of the way they went about it.'

Good positive words about the youngsters, and bodes well for the future as they'll all learn from this season, and the experience.

Alex's one criticism of the game and our performance, is an old, old thing.

'We have got to stop conceding from set pieces!'

This isn`t a football school its the premier league,we will have a future in the championship at this rate, we are in ******** freefall here.

Lerneravfc but with 8 or 9 first team players out, what is your alternative? Moan by all means but be realistic. I thought some of the younger players came of age today and showed they can be good, But they have to learn and we have no alternative so support the team, they are the only ones who can get us out of this.
Gordonsleftboot
Get back to me before the cardiff game next season gordon.
lerneravfc
Fancy Cardiff for promotion? Very poor decision denied us chance of going 3-2 up but Chelsea were the better side overall no doubt. Great spirit from our Academy team
krfeskivilla
We cannot blame anyone for today, on the plus side Lichaj was great and it will be interesting to see if Huttons comes straight back in. We have to hope we don't go down because we won't get back up, I just think of Leeds, the thought scares the hell out of me
andy3221
Young, Old, Middle aged, doesn't matter who McLeish had out there we would have still lost like we have all season
AdzVilla11
The reality is we can't expect to come to a place like VP and expect to get anything out of the game! thought the lads fought well enough, just too many youngsters and no stan luckily we did have heskey.......championship here we come!

I cannot believe some of the negative moaners. It is as though you actually want us to go down. As I see it Wolves are gone Wigan are next in line. They have Chelsea, Man Utd Arsenal and Newcastle within their next five games. Nice fight back but they are gone as I see it. QPR have a horrendous run and despite winning two of the last three look likely to implode during any game and with their next game against Man Utd the slide might well start. We are currently five points clear with a home game against Bolton in hand. We have an away game against Liverpool coming up, who are dire at present. Possible we could get a point there if we turn up like we did today. We then have a home game against Stoke who are dreadful away. Man Utd away is, admittedly, an almost impossible fixture for us at the moment. But with away games at West Brom (3 points above us) and Norwich ( five points above us) not to mention that game against Bolton, we could easily get five points from the last eight. It will probably also be the lowest points total to go down for a few seasons owing to the level of competition and the difficulty of the run in. I thought we played incredibly well in parts today and were unlucky not to go in level. Unfortunately, the ref had a stinker today and at 2-2 I really fought we could have gone on and got something. What a fight back. We were pressing them hard for the equaliser when they hit us on the break in injury time. The score line flattered them and this was a team of international class players playing mostly against kids from our fantastic academy. Championship my arse. UTV. Forever Villa and onward Villa with all of us all screaming these kids on with every bit of thunder in us.

I have never thought or said we'd go down and still don't but we are 15th, 5 points off the relegation zone, 3rd worse attack in the league and we have McLeish in charge, so sorry if I don't sound too chirpy at the moment!!
AdzVilla11
Stop the moaning, stop the negativity and get behind the lads. They need us to lift them, their skipper has been dealt a huge blow, we have senior pros out injured and we have some of the finest young talents in the game (with claret and blue blood coursing through their veins too, I might add.) Get behind the team from now until the end of the season. Starting with Anfield we are going to batter all comers left, right and centre. Lift the lads and roar the team to victory for each and every match between here and season's end. Come On You Lions and Up The Villa!!
donegalvillan
It's not about 1 game. It's 38 and we've been nowhere near good enough for 90% of the time. This is Eck's negativeness. Everyone has injuries. No excuses in that dept. We were shocking when we had a full squad. We could very easily get relegated and some are just going "get behind the team, it'll be alright" It seriously may not be alright. Eck has to ***** off ASAP and let anyone try to get 6 more points for us. He's incapable.
Villan444
Two great positive posts from fans then 444 pops up again with his confidence and passion. Me? I'm with Grizzly every time. Get behind the team fffs and stop moaning and bitching. The time for that is after we have secured PL status for next year and not before. Agree that Lichaj played well, thought Ireland had a great game too. Bannan also looked much more assured. One issue I would raise is whether Gabby is the right captain for the rest of the season. Not sure he is a leader by words or actions. Cuellar when fit would do it for me or even Collins. Or just maybe Ireland?
Gordonsleftboot
So I was the only one being negative Gordon?? You just like to moan at other fans for being realistic. You are always praising the emperors new clothes. As said before, you really don't know what you're on about. Keep taking the Prozac and living in the false belief. Don't even bother reading grizzly's comments as they're just ramblings and he has the same agenda as you, something else that you're in denial about. You said negative comments are boring, at least they're realistic!!!
Villan444
Agree with all the positivecomments. The idea that they need us to get behind them more than ever BECAUSE we have 8 or 9 senior players out injured doesn't score with me though. I think this is a plus! Certainly King Carlos and Stan are two big players we will miss - but having Baker, Lichaj, Bannan , Gardner and Herd, Alby all in the team together is just what's been needed anyway.Chelsea in currrent form would always be a big ask - but I trust these youngsters if picked will definitely get the points we need AND entertain us too. Please no Emile just because it is an away game against a supposed "big club" next week. We do not want any more Spurs, City, or Arsenal away type performances - lets go and fight to win every game - and that way we will maximise our points return. Up the Villa.

Clown.

Gordon - i admire your optimism, but seriously, take a look at the league. Where are our points going to come from?? What have we seen from Mcleish all season that even makes us think we have a glimmer of hope for a bright future?? Nobody wants us to get relegated, but i'm seriously worried because all the teams below us are used to fighting for every single last point - as the games at the weekend showed. Battling relegation is NOT acceptable for any villa team. For those saying "he's had injuries to deal with" yes, that's true for the last 2 games or so, but flip, ALL SEASON WE'VE BEEN WOEFUL! He's had nearly an entire season, and look where we are now? Looking over our shoulder at the drop!! Wake up fellow villans and open your eyes to the reality of this clown of a manager before it's too late.
thorpyuk
Even without protests against McMuppet and with all the players at his disposal he still took us to our worst home run since the 1920's. I will always support the players, but will be demonstrating against the most clueless manager in Villa history whilst he is still at our club. We have we witnessed the dire performances all season, the surrender of our name before a ball is kicked, but please look at the stats. We have conceeded 20 goals from set pieces and scored none. That is evidence of what happens at the training ground. That record itself is enough to sack McMuppet and refuse him any compensation. I agree with supporting the team, as I will and have done all season, but I will now be participating with protesting against the worst managerial appointment in 138 years. UTV. McMuppet Out Immediately.

Well said voice... who knows what the board were thinking!

Agree 100% voice!
