Carlos Cuellar To Return To Spain?

Only bit of transfer talk I can see right now is an outward link.

John Cross @ the Mirror says that Valencia are interested in free agent Carlos Cuellar at the end of the season.

Cuellar, who as you know can leave on a Bosman at the end of this wretched season, is free to talk to other clubs now.

cuellar

Seems strange that he`s not been signed up for longer at Villa, surely both Dunne and Collins will be moved on in the summer? If so, we need Cuellar for his experience don`t we?

There is a petition somewhere or other to keep him! I must admit, nice as that sounds, I don`t believe fans can do that sort of thing, rightly or wrongly it is the choice of the manager (any manager, not just this unpopular one) who he does and doesn`t want.

Shame though, think Cuellar, at centre back, is head and shoulders above the 'other two` who for me would not have been allowed back anywhere near a Villa shirt after their conduct last season.

A return to his home country could well be tempting for Cuellar though. Whatever he decides, I wish him nothing but luck, he is one player who always looks like he cares and has always conducted himself brilliantly even when being unfairly dropped'.

If we let him go then what's the point anymore? He wants to stay, he's quality and for the sake of a few thousand a week, we're going to let him go for nothing? If he goes then we may as well just give up. We won't find a better centre back for free! I'm praying he stays. He's more than earnt a new deal!
astvil123
Maybe he doesn't want to sign until we have guaranteed safety.
BKKVILLA
I guess his wages are sky high though and so it makes negotiating a new contract difficult for the club. We may want to keep him but it would seem rude to offer him a worse deal. That's business, which is all that football has become.

Surely if its a case of playing for valencia or for McClueless then its going to be bye bye Carlos
fulford
Cuellar used to live in rented accomodation in Brum which was owned by a friend of a friend. He had to submit papers as proof of income and he is one of the lowest paid senior pro's at Villa. Mind you, we let Reo-Coker go when he wanted a new deal on the same terms he was on previously and he was 'only' on 30k per week. McLeish keeps saying experience and professionalism are important to the squad yet has so far failed to sign Carlos back up, and kept picking the blunder twins (Dunne, Collins) ahead of him because he is afraid of confrontation. Spineless t'nuc. He can't even get his story straight with himself!

If we let Carlos go, it just sums up how utterly clueless the current regime is. I remember when he signed I read his contract was 30,000 a week, maybe I'm wrong, but if we can't afford to keep players on those wages then forget about it.
Stephen Jay Hawkings
I can't work out the maths and may need a little help. If he signs a new contract, that for arguments sake is 10K better per week than his cuurent one it will cost the club 520,000 per year. If we sign a new centre half for 5m and pay him the same as we were going to pay Carlos then the club would be 5m worse off surely?? The only way to beat this is to let Cuellar go and to find a free transfer who we can pay less to, even though this is likely to be a 'lesser' player. Aahhh!!! Light bulb moment!!!! I have just seen the 'plan'.
voiceoftheholte
Why does everyone assume that Dunne & Collins will be off this summer? Presuming Villa want rid of these two' both are on large wages that won't be matched elsewhere, so it will very tricky to achieve. If they don't go it would seem unlikely that Villa can afford to keep Cueller on too. Proud history, bright future - are you sure Mr Lerner?
thefazza
I can help you with your problem voice. If a club can save money on a transfer fee, then they will have more money for player wages. Cuellar could ask for a massive pay rise to equal this. I like carlos alot but he hasent held his position under 3 different managers. Also if its so obvious to most fans that football is money motivated then why are so many shocked that carlos is holding out for a final pay off. Is this another reason to beat mccleish?
_aron_
Wonder what signing on fee he would command, might be a bit prohibitive if he's after his last big pay day!
Stourbridge Villan
Voiceoftheholte makes perfect sense for a change! #banter ;) Carlos is one of the most down to earth gents in football, I don't think for a moment he would demand the earth in a new contract.
Fenrison
Difficult to comment when we dont no the circumstances of whats requested by the player, first instincts are to keep Cuellar but dont know if a signing on fee is being sought and what sort of wages we are talking about.
Merlin128777
As Merlin says, it's hard to make firm comments as we don't know the circumstances. However, one thing I can say is this - I want Carlos to stay. He's the best we have.
Pride of Lions
agreed merlin. I want carlos to stay, but its advantage carlos. Contracts should be extended 2 years before they expire. Whether its the lack of stability at the club or the player wanting more we'll never know. I dont think he will stay tho, shame
_aron_
Our club is a joke when it comes to player contract management, it really is.
