Andy Johnson & Danny Guthrie?

It's being suggested that Alex McLeish 'fancies' Fulham's Andy Johnson and Newcastle midfielder Danny Guthrie for summer moves.

The Mirror suggests that Johnson has been added to McLeish's summer Bosman list, with the striker still yet to agree terms on a new deal with the London club.

It's been an average season for Johnson looking at the stats, with 11 goals this season but despite his England caps and lots of hype a few seasons ago, would he really offer us at 31 anything we don't already have with Gabby?

There's even less to the Danny Guthrie link, short of him being out of contract at the end of the season.

Oh well never fear, at least Cisneros wasn't mentioned this time!

I assume this is the sign of the times for you, for a while at least. on the positive, they are reasonable players that wont cost a penny in transfer fees and are probably not going to break your wage structure if they do sign.
Sounds like we are on the way to building a really solid championship side.
Depressing ey oxfordspur? Unfortunately this is what awaits us from now on, it was expected when the board appointed an average manager, now we are targeting average players like these two. Wouldn't mind the other lad from Fulham but Johnson? Don't care if he is free or not, if he doesn't improve the squad, and he affects youth development what is the point?
dont believe all the crap in the papers though.
Two decent links, last time I checked we were *****, yet nobody but the elite is good enough for us.
Not really Lerneravfc, i no they are only links but Andy Johnson especially is just an extremely average/poor player, can any Villa fan really say they would want him? I no it's paper talk but i wonder where the ambition has gone with some folk.
I would take him yes, who else have we got? We need to be realistic, we flirt with relegation and have no money. This is the level of player we are in for unless we find a gem from abroad. I think he's been very good at fulham.
I digress.
Great more journeymen, not guthrie but will he improve our current team? I think not and we will finally be rid of Heskey only to replace him with WHO Andy Johnson! Lerneravfc do you really want him here only to push Weimann down the pecking order? or maybe your like ECK and see him as a replacement for Heskey in Midfield? I suppose our ambition can only match our managers, avoid relagation is a success for him how depressing...
So this is how it is, ffs :X

Based on this piece of vague speculation by the daily Mirror I will definitely not be renewing my season ticket and demand that the Board resign. This will continue until the board realises that Villa fans require top class speculation not this mediocre stuff and release a statement demanding that the Daily Mirror and in fact all low budget tabloids give us a better quality of speculation. After all we won the League 31 years ago.
if Mcleish "fancies" Johnson, maybe he should ask him to live with him in a small cottage far far away from all things football...
We don't need em, Bosman or no Bosman.....

I see what McLeish is doing. He's already playing negative boring dire tactics, so he's obviously sat down and said "Now then, who are the most negative dire boring players in the league" And drawn up a shortlist.... that way he has a boring team to match his boring tactics. *Yawn*
I like Johnson, but the amount of flack he gets from us about his Bluenose past would he really come? Another Bluenose joining at the start of another season? Can't see it............Although.........
Nothing against Johnson just think hes over the hill now and where would he play? Only place I could see him is in Gabbys place and I do not think hes as good as Gabby.
Good God, is this now the standard of player we're pursuing?
jsmccue i myself do not give a damn about former Bluenose links, unless you are an idiot. I do not want Johnson at Villa because quite simple he is crap?
Merlin128777, I think your wrong, Johnson is Bents replacement - Sadly. If not him Zamora. Gabby aint going no where. Like me he is Villa Till I die. Even at the age of 31 Johnson would want a decent wage but that would still mean the end for Bent who is on high wages. Wouldn't it be interesting if our 4 forwards next season would be Johnson/Zamora, Gabby, Weimann and Heskey. God Help Us.
Guthrie reminds me of Milner, box to box grafter..could be a decent shout.
P.Avfc I'm not saying anyone cares about ex bluenose links, I'm just saying he doesn't like us very much. He gets loads of stick from us when he plays at Villa Park. I'd trade him for Hesky any day of the week. Hesky's wages are higher I bet. It seems these are the kinds of links we've got to look forward to this summer :-(
@ P.Avfc, why still balming the manager, the fault lies squarely on your board. Not suggesting that McLeish was a good appointment, as it was plain dumb, but again it was the board of their advisors that did that and McLeish can only work with what he has and what money is made available to him, which appears to be not a great deal. In truth, though I wouldnt be jumping with joy if these were linked with Spurs, I also accept they are decent mid table players that is probably where you are looking at until something changes
Are we supposed to get excited and start conversing about these links? Even the unknown Australian coming from Holland is nothing to get excited about. We are becoming the new Wigan Athletic very fast, only defference being they find young cheap players!
Ox, you can have Eck when 'Arry goes to England!!! He wouldn't go for more than a shut out (in his own words) and to nick one at the other end even if he was managing Barcelona!!! I know we haven't got a pot to ***** in but noone desrves this!!
Stick your Andy Johnson up your a-hole! Are we forgetting when he scored for Palace after 6 minutes at VP in 2004 and the way he celebrated (ex-blues style) in front of the Holte and he almost caused a riot? No thanks McLeish - what next signing Stern John????
