Dunne and Dusted?

Dunne and Dusted?

Our defence has been dreadful all season. So it's been interesting every time we tried a different defender to see if the blame can be laid on any one individual.

I know nothing is quite that simple but, for example, when Warnock was dropped, Clark played at LB and by half-time Warnock was back on as Clark had a torrid time.

Cuellar filled in manfully for Hutton during his injury and despite producing outstanding individual performances the team results were still not good and goals were conceded.

Then Dunne got injured late in the game against Man City. Villa had conceded 10 goals in the previous 5 games (including 3-2 in the FA cup). This gave Villa a chance to try out Cuellar and Collins.

So far this partnership has played in 3 games and conceded only a solitary goal. Not bad considering the lack of times they've played together. Added to the fact that Blackburn and Fulham have been potent in front of goal all season.

Its not my intention to write-off Dunne. However, I would like to see Cuellar stay at Villa. Dunne can still perform to a high standard in the league, and it was not long ago that Paul McGrath described Dunne's performance against Russia as the finest defensive performance he'd ever seen. But he is losing his pace and this summer might be the time for him to face a new challenge that would motivate him, more than he can hope to achieve with Villa next season after some good years under MON.

My opinion, if the partnership continues successfully between Collins and King Carlos, is that in the summer see if we can sell Dunne to the highest bidder.

Not conceeding in the final 10 minutes would be an achievement [ever since Stoke and the end of our 4th place dream]; to keep a couple of clean sheets is amazing

I agree, was thinking along the same lines. I reckon Alex McLeish is looking at how Carlos and James get on against some of the better teams. If they do well, then I think dunne sees out his last days as sub or moves to the MSL.

I think we have to remember the teams we played with this defence, even warnock has looked decent but i think we all know that can change any second, but I do think Carlos and Collins can be a better partnership than Dunne and Collins as Carlos can actually pass and dribble!

Get *****ed Dunne, another bad attitude that we can do without.

Got to agree Kentvillan,Dunne is still capable of the odd outstanding performance but on a week to week basis Cuellar and Collins look much better. I know Collins has his critics but I have long felt he is capable of better with a different partner.

Hi all, I wrote this one along with the Hutton article, glad there are a few others who seem to be on the same wavelength. I think the idea that a MLS club might attract Dunne as quite an interesting idea too. Maybe Keano could put in a good word?!

I think Dunne is similar to Johnny Evans at ManUre or Titus Bramble. He is a good defender MOST o the time but can always be "counted on" for one or two moments of pure stupidity that can cost a game.

Certainly the stats are against Dunne; Carlos has been brilliant especially going forward. Just one little thing about only conceding one goal in 3 games, look at two of the teams Wigan and Blackburn? COTVABU

...Personally, I will be glad to see him move on but who will pay the stupid wages that Dunn's getting? His lack of movability is a weakness at the very heart of our defence and teams know. Yet another clear example of MON' incompetence and highlights how he was given a free-hand at Aston Villa. Have you noticed how Sunderland have kept him under a more financial hold?

Disagree with a couple of point there thomas holte. Dunne looked like a decent signing when he first arrived, but has become more and more unreliable and as others have stated, capable of making some daft mistakes. Also, I don't think MON has had much of a chance to blow any of Sunderlands' money yet has he?
