'If It's Football, It's Vital'

McLeish Did Know What He Was Doing!

Weimann for N'Zogbia brought out the obvious chant from the fans, but McLeish has reassured fans it was a calculated decision from the bench.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the gaffer said:

'The dugout can be a very tense place to be, certainly when you are not winning and certainly when you have not won at home for a long time. Especially so at a club like this where the fans' expectations are massive, and it was a great relief to see the goal go on.'

On the substitution directly he added:

'Sometimes it comes off and sometimes not. But they weren't desperate subs, they were calculated, we did know what we were doing at those moments.'

I don't think there is a single fan who disagreed with the introduction of Weimann, and the only dissenting voices (mine included) to the introduction of Bannan and Gardner were that the decisions came so late again.

The annoyance came from taking off N'Zogbia who was lively and posing a threat, as opposed to what was a poor game by Albie. Had the change been Weimann for Albrighton I'm not sure the fans would've reacted that way.

It obviously worked for Eck this week, especially the latter subs of Bannan and Gardner, but we've seen them both given 8 odd minutes before and it simply hasn't been long enough for them to get into the game.

You could argue they didn't get in the game today, but a couple of passes between them gave us that opening that Weimann made full advantage of by gambling on a rebound.

Imagine what all three players might be able to muster in a team performance like that, when they have longer to get up to speed and stamp their mark on a game fully!

I left VP today happy, 1st time in a long time, i just hope if Mcleish starts turning things around now our fans don't boo or shout abuse for the sake of it, all i want is Villa winning or trying too, and if that is the case from now on great IMO UTV!
clivethevillan
Give the guy some credit. N'Zogbia was good in the first half, but the longer the second went on, he wasn't doing as well. Fresh legs, on came Weimann and the reaction around me was relatively hostile. Herd for Bannan, good decision again. Petrov off for Gardner, another good decision. My gripe was that he could have done any of these after an hour as we really needed the shake-up. But, we had a bit of luck for a change and I thought we thoroughly deserved our win.
godzvilla
I didn't boo (I never do) but I thought Petrov looked totally gassed and everyone around me felt that either albie or stan should've been the one to make way for weiman. Having said that we were all relieved that it wasn't Ireland going off or Heskey coming on.
AVbornandbred
I thought Albie should of been the one subbed for Weimann but no.... that takes brains.
Pride of Lions
Calculated decision to bring on the subs ?! All I can say is that he should keep using the same calculator from now on then, because the calculator he has been using for the last 8 months is obviously srap. That would be right though, our first win at home for 4 months and Mickey Mouse McLeish takes 90% of the credit ???? What about ALL our other results
PussEKatt
Well he got the blame for all the other ones and people revelled in it so why not give credit when it's due - but then it must really irk to just give a little credit when warranted - but then I guarantee 100% had we not won - he would have been blamed for the ills of Villa, the world, the crisis in syria and anything else there is. I don't particularly like the guy as a manager but have the decency to praise when warranted and criticise when warranted.
nazvfc
If the ginger tosser knew what he was doing why didn't he start the game with Gardner, Bannen and Weimann or at least bring them on at half time?
moocher
And if it had not worked - you'd be going ballistic - as I said it must really irk some to even give a minute bit of credit when due. I bet if this thread had been critical of Eck you'd all be revelling in it but because it doesnt some still have to find something to have a go at the manager. And I know 100% that I will get blasted here for daring to have a go at the fans.
nazvfc
Why do you only ever pipe up to have a go at the fans then Naz?? Don't hear from you when the result doesn't match your agenda. As you were pathetically trying to have a go at other fans, YOU wouldn't be commenting if that 93rd minute chance hadn't gone in. Talk about only singing when you're winning. No idea why you don't just get on with supporting rather than only ever speaking to have a go because every other fan isn't as brain dead as yourself
Villan444
Listen nazvfc: Its quite simple really. We are having a go because Mickey Mouse McLeish does not know what he is doing. If he knew what he was doing would we be 15th ? If he knew what he was doing would we go 4 months without a home win ? If he knew what he was doing would we only draw with the 2 bottom teams ? He got it right once.......Big deal Lets see how many times he gets it right between now and the end of the season.
PussEKatt
I agreed with ByEck at the time. Although we controlled the game in the first half we had no cutting edge up front. Putting Weimann up alongside Gabby and moving to a 4-4-2 formation made us more threatening. N'Zogbia played well in the first half but was much less effective in the second. So, for once, the right decision.
chocolate teapot
Spot on PussEKatt. sorry but that was a desperate win which was won with a very lucky goal. Full credit to Weinmann for being ready, it was a great poachers goal but the keeper should have held the shot and the game should have ended 0 - 0. This squad is bursting with exciting players and Mcliesh doesn't have the right philosophy. He really is out of his depth.
Thom85
Villan - look in the threads - you'll see me criticiise him plenty - but all I see from you -after each game (win or lose) is the same s**t - as I said I don't particularly like the guy as a manager - but I turn up and watch anbd will praise when due and lambast when due - yesterday was no need to lambast. I remember threads were you agree with anyone having a go at the manager but at the same time have a go at us who don't. I will lambast the guy - I did at Wigan as I was there and hated every minute, but yesterday it was much better - not perfect - but better abd a little praise is warranted - and I was right - about being lambasted - maybe if you posted in the forum you'd see I have a go at the manager when warranted - not just for the sakle of it cos I don't want the guy here as some do. We are stuck with him for the forseeable future - I prefer to support the TEAM - and that included the manager - as there is nothing I can do tyo change it so I put all my energy in backing the team to put in performances like yesterday - but keep on having a go at me - I've had worse whilst protesting against Ellis. I'll just give my support where it is needed - always have done always will.
nazvfc
Well said NAZVFC. McLeish does deserve some praise for the result and it was a well deserved win too, not the lucky victory that some would believe. Discussion on here is a waste of time. People come with set agendas and will say what they want anyway irrespective of events. Its that type of blinkered thinking that will ensure that fans' opinions mean little to any board of directors.
Gordonsleftboot
Of course Gordon, you are totally different and haven't got an agenda atall have you????? Lol. Unfortunately EVERYONE has on here!! At least some of us aren't too stupid or pigheaded to think that we're better than everyone else. I will slag Eck off if we lose, draw or win as I hate his style of football. It will never change so I will never like him. But some people say that they hate him but try to defend him when he has a stroke of luck. Both of you don't like him (apparently) but neither will say a bad word against him or if you do, it's not his fault?!?!?!?! Guys, you need to get out more and have interaction with football fans who aren't Villans. We are shocking but you seem too proud to admit it and live in denial. Nothing wrong with pride but it's only a few of you that won't face obvious facts.
Villan444
And Naz. You weren't praising him. You were just moaning at everyone else who didn't. It's like talking to kids when you've got to explain to someone what they've just written a few lines up. It's not the first time either FFS. You could've just been positive about the game and or Eck but NO you had to be negative about the fans.
Villan444
now (I believe) we are safe lets just play the kids from now on.
Lost_In_Ca
McMuppet made the changes that turned a drab bore draw into a vital 3 points. Any reasonable mgr with the quality at his disposal would have set his team up to try and make the visiting keeper make more than 1 save in the entire game. We were playing a team with one of the worst away records, but a win is a win. Victory over Bolton and maybe the players can relax and play with more confidence and freedom despite McMuppet.
voiceoftheholte
Glad of the 3 points, At last a game without him having to play Heskey. Only beef with Mcleish on this one if you want to take the credit for the subs being such a good idea then bloody well accept the blame when we play badly. Dont wish to spend my time on the manager after the players put in a good shift.UTV
Merlin128777
I vote 'Lambasted' replaces 'Prepared' on the club badge.
juddy
He's got it right once and now has the smug look of someone who's been getting it right all season. Now prove us wrong McClueless by showing us it wasn't a fluke.
fulford
Villan444 - you're right I have no agenda. I say as I see things. There is too much anger on here for it to be called judgement. McLeish? Not to blame for everything that has happened. Others need to share that too - including supporters who prefer to slag instead of support. I believe McLeish should be given until Christmas and then be judged. Until then I'll support the club and renew my season ticket. I look forward to seeing you at VP next season.
Gordonsleftboot
I'll be there when Eck has gone mate. My self-admitted agenda is to see good football at The Villa. This is unacheivable with Eck there. You need to admit your agenda Gordon, it's not like you sit on the fence!! As I said before, your present attitude was perfect for the first several games of Eck's tenure. It's gone well beyond that. I can't take these shocking tactics till next Christmas!! What will you do if we're still as bad then?? Protest, boycott, I doubt it. Things have gone too far already. The see through, pub league tactics, negativity and past record have proven he isn't good enough and won't suddenly change overnight, by next Christmas or next millennium!!!
Villan444
Have to agree with 444 we could give ECK all the time and all the oil money in the world and we would never improve, if he can't make the team perform in a year then another 1 isn't going to make a difference, well it might but the difference won't be good, his philosophy just doesn't work, not in the prem and not in scotland, Villa deserve better and the fans deserve better no matter what side of the fence thier sitting on!
KerryVillian
If people think Fulham wasn't a good performance then for their blood pressure I hope they stop thinking they are watching Barcelona. It was a cracking performance, and an enjoyable watch. That's how we should be playing every game and with the boost of confidence playing like that regularly would bring, we'd have been 3-0 clear by halftime. It was as good as our best showings this season, inc the Arsenal game. If Eck can get the team motivated to perform like that every match I'll be happy. The fact I don't think he can is besides the point. But credit where it's due, and not just polemic bitching would be nice.
mike_field
Nup sorry guys Eck OUT!! He is NOT the future and how any of you can think otherwise is beyond me.
AdzVilla11
No-one is calling you polish Mic.
Villan444
Mike were you watching a different game? 3 - 0 up by half time??? Schwarzer made one, not difficult save, from Gabi and that was it. We didnt have near misses, we didn't hit the woodwork until the second half, we never had shots off the line. The performance was average against a team with one of the worst away records in the league. Second half we were second best and got a late winner due to a keeper fumble. Do not try and 'spin' that game, as welcome as the 3 points were, into anything other than average at best.
