Guzan Offered New Deal

Brad Guzan has been offered a new extended contract at Villa following his deputised performances.

Speaking to the BBC manager Alex McLeish said'

'We will give Brad time, it depends on how long though. We have made the offer and we respect that Brad needs time to mull it over.'

McLeish says he understands the position Guzan finds himself in, as second in command to Given who clearly will always be the number one choice when fit regardless of how Guzan performs, but he does point out the situation isn't quite as demoralising as it may appear to be.

'I understand the dilemma but at the same time, it's not like he is second in command to Joe Hart who is only 24. Shay is 35 now and, when Brad has come in, he has proved himself to be a Premier League goalkeeper. Brad probably realises that if Shay has a niggle or a problem, or we are going to do anything in the cup competitions, we are going to put him in.'

IF we are going to do anything in the cup competitions...we sodding well better Mr McLeish. Fans didn't stomach us not taking Cup Competitions seriously in the brief time it looked like we may have been able to snatch 4th place, we certainly aren't going to stomach not taking the cups seriously when we play this dire uninspiring...insipid...brand of football and are aiming for midtable at best.

Anyway, back on topic.

Since joining in 2008 Brad has made just 32 appearances for the club, including 6 league starts but from our point of view he's a very capable back up and we should be looking to keep him, even if it means the odd short term loan with an immediate recall to keep him happy.

News of the contract offer would explain why the official site have rehashed Given's comments about him again.

But with Benji Siegrist so well rated, but not ready yet Guzan could be the perfect link between Given reaching the end of his days and Siegrist developing further into the role - if of course his progression continues.

How long is this contract on offer I wonder, as I certainly agree with the last paragraph of the article .

wonder what he'll decide, obviously to start with being understudy is fine but he'll eventually want regular first team football. Not an easy decision.
