Little bit of defender talk today.
Shay Given says that James Collins and Carlos Cuellar and bridge the gap left by the injured (Click Here for details) Richard Dunne.
To be fair, I think Carlos Cuellar has had a rum deal in not being given a regular centre position, far far better than the two who I personally think shamed this club last season. But hey, that might just be me, I personally hope to never see Dunne back in a Villa shirt, want to see him sold in the summer.
Given says on www.avfc.co.uk 'It is a big loss obviously because he has been the mainstay of our defence all season - he hasn't missed a game,'
He might have been a mainstay but look how many goals we`ve conceded and where we are in the league? Makes little sense really.
Given continues, 'Someone else needs to step up to the plate now and fill the void left by Dunnie so hopefully one of the lads will do that."
It does make me smile what dunnie means in Australian. Very appropriate.
Sorry!
And talking about Carlos, the player has said he does prefer being at centre-back but he will play anywhere he is asked.
He said: 'It's been a long, long time since I played left-back. I used to play there when I was 18 - that's a long time ago. You have to find the position at the start with your first few touches just to feel natural and comfortable. But after five minutes I felt totally fine with the ball and with the defensive side too. I enjoyed playing there. I was obviously not happy with the result but in the end I enjoyed playing there."
Adding, 'But I will play anywhere. If you give me some gloves, I will play in goal - anything for the good of the team. For me the best feeling is being in the first XI. I don't care where I play. Of course, everyone knows my natural position is centre-back but for the team I will play anywhere.'

Always liked Carlos, his attitude always seems to be right. Shame he looks set to leave on a free in the summer.
