Carlos Has Right Attitude - Given Will Miss Dunne

Little bit of defender talk today.

Shay Given says that James Collins and Carlos Cuellar and bridge the gap left by the injured (Click Here for details) Richard Dunne.

To be fair, I think Carlos Cuellar has had a rum deal in not being given a regular centre position, far far better than the two who I personally think shamed this club last season. But hey, that might just be me, I personally hope to never see Dunne back in a Villa shirt, want to see him sold in the summer.

Given says on www.avfc.co.uk 'It is a big loss obviously because he has been the mainstay of our defence all season - he hasn't missed a game,'

He might have been a mainstay but look how many goals we`ve conceded and where we are in the league? Makes little sense really.

Given continues, 'Someone else needs to step up to the plate now and fill the void left by Dunnie so hopefully one of the lads will do that."

It does make me smile what dunnie means in Australian. Very appropriate.

Sorry!

And talking about Carlos, the player has said he does prefer being at centre-back but he will play anywhere he is asked.

He said: 'It's been a long, long time since I played left-back. I used to play there when I was 18 - that's a long time ago. You have to find the position at the start with your first few touches just to feel natural and comfortable. But after five minutes I felt totally fine with the ball and with the defensive side too. I enjoyed playing there. I was obviously not happy with the result but in the end I enjoyed playing there."

Adding, 'But I will play anywhere. If you give me some gloves, I will play in goal - anything for the good of the team. For me the best feeling is being in the first XI. I don't care where I play. Of course, everyone knows my natural position is centre-back but for the team I will play anywhere.'

Always liked Carlos, his attitude always seems to be right. Shame he looks set to leave on a free in the summer.

Given might miss dunne, but i will not for sure, Clark and Cueller at CB, Herd or Lichaj at Rb, Baker or Stevens at Lb

Dunne...too slow, often loses his man through lack of concentration, and always liable to do something disastrous...scores too many own goals, gives away too many penalties...nah...we're better without him.

If only the rest of our team were like Carlos Cueller, he has been treated like crap, and is a fear better player than Dunne has been , he will be a real loss when he leaves

I really like Cuellar, decent player and a top guy. Hope he gets his chance at centre-back (although he did do a great job at left-back) and hope that his performances prove that he's worth keeping. I don't want to see him leave in the summer.

Well, MON played Carlos at RB because he covered the others so well and didn't let anyone down his wing either in the season that we conceded the 3rd least goals. His distribution has improved 10-fold aswell. We need a voice back there though and don't think that any of the others have got it!!!!

Have to agree, hope he plays a blinder and Dunne stays on the bench.

Dunne is a spent force. Ship him out to the MLS. How long does he have on his contract???
Timmsy
Tevez claims he's been trated like a dog! If anyone has it's King Carlos, and has he ever moaned....NO! Carlos is a top guy in my book and a bloody decent player who can operate anywhere across the back four. At least he'll have a decent run in his favoured position now.... hope he plays brilliantly there. If he's allowed to leave in the summer, someone needs shooting!

If Carlos isn't offered a new contract then I'll know Randy has it in for us, and if he's not going to bother visit Villa then maybe we could send him McLeish's head in a box. Don't know how else he's going to listen to our demands.

advance season ticket sales will be only thing he will listen to regards the manager stephen. Would agree re Carlos instead of Dunne would rather have seen Clark given a run at cb pity about his injury occuring now

Dunney has 1 year left. MLS is a good shout actually. His injury is a good chance to see if Cuellar can form a good partnership with Collins, if they can, then Cuellar might be convinced to sign a new contract and hopefully play regularly for us. Hopefully this summer we can sell at least two defenders, ideally Warnock and either Collins or Dunne. Hutton won't be sold and has played better in the last 3 games, especially going forward at least.
