McLeish - Unlucky & Abysmal

Alex McLeish thinks we had a brilliant gameplan today, describes us as unlucky and then says we have abysmal home form.

I fear it may be one of these verdicts that forces me to comment, but I shall do my best to resist because the last thing most of you want after watching that pile of turgid dross is to relive the game too much.

Speaking to Sky Sports after that embarrassment Eck said...yes really...he said.

'I thought the game plan was excellent but the players were unlucky.'

Losing a game after actually attacking the opposition, riding roughshot over them for 89 minutes only to see them then nick a last minute goal is unlucky.

What fans suffered for 90 minutes today can in no way be described as the team being bleeding unlucky you Ecking idiot.

'We're getting a lot of luck at the moment but it's all bad. Richard has hurt his shoulder, today we played young Gardner in central midfield, we lost Ciaran Clark yesterday and he's going to be out for a few weeks with a knee ligament strain.'

What has that got to do with the performance, the game, the lack of pride, lack of effort, lack of determination to actually try and win on home soil. Dunne was injured in the 90th minute.

Is it unlucky Eck again picked Heskey over a natural winger. Gardner gave a decent account of himself today, but if we weren't creative enough (clue we couldn't have been less creative if we'd have tried camping out in our own half) why no Bannan, no Ireland...was it unlucky we only saw N'Zogbia for 21 odd minutes because Heskey was doing such a sterling job.

Jeez the pointless, inane, inaccurate after match mud slingings Eck involves himself in in order to avoid the obvious failings that he should be able to control are getting sodding tiresome.

It gets better though.

'I thought the guys gave us absolutely everything tonight, you can't fault them, their effort was brilliant and the Villa fans stayed right behind us for the entire game and I thought we were very unlucky not to get anything. We must stop the errors, that's been a problem, so if we can cut that out. You gave yourself a good account, that's the least you can ask for and I felt the players were unlucky in the final moments.'

Really...if that's giving everything McLeish promote the Academy side please. If you think that is a performance that is acceptable, irrespective of the opposition, then you are really in the wrong job.

I'm not sure what's worse, the excuses and the blind optimism of Eck after the game or the actual game. That's a tough one to call.

He ends with.

'Our home form is pretty abysmal.'

Possibly the only truthful words he uttered today. But again, he can't help but let himself down.

'I'm disappointed in that because I pride myself in my managerial career with home performances and the current one isn't good enough. Performance level was pretty decent but the discipline and work rate of the players was exemplary.'

I give up. I wish he would. It isn't going to be long before he loses the non-interneters, then there will be some real trouble.

On the official site version of his after match, he also picks out Carlos' miss and says the way Everton approached the game was our gameplan but unfortunately we didn't get stuck in at the other end.

Bit difficult to WHEN YOU DON'T ATTACK and don't bother bringing on attackings players until the end of the game!!!!

So what you saying mike, happy or not? ;0)
The fear
heskey was not the man to be on the pitch today... we were a different prospect when soggy and ireland came on. wtf did they not start...

It is so utterly soul-destroying to watch , and then to listen to Eck congratulating everyone (especially himself) on the game plan - if our game plan is to display an overwhelming lack of ambition to attack, have a go and entertain, then he's dead right. Continually selecting Heskey head of the likes of N'Zogbia, Ireland or Bannan defies belief, and turning Villa into an entertainment-free zone makes my blood run cold. Haven't got a great deal of time for Gary Neville, but he was bang-on in commentary. We have some really good players, shame they aren't being allowed to play. 36% possession AT HOME???!!! Unreal

What the hell was Martin Tyler doing criticising the Villa fans for for "not giving him a chance" I think you have given him a chance, i'm suprised at how little you actually care about his brum past. Yet when you criticise him for playing Heskey or signing Alan Hutton you get lumped with "Its because of his Brum past, he was never going to be given a chance" Gary Neville today said that Eck had done "Nothing Wrong" since taking charge. What's wrong with these people. I feel sorry for you because you're gettin sold down the river, and when you dare criticize the most negative football manager in the top flight you are just being "fickle". If i were a Blackburn fan i'd be protesting against Venky's but i'd support Steve Kean because he's not the problem. At Villa it's the reverse, your manager is a joke and for your sake i hope you force him out.

Thanks Hudders :) Glad to see its not just us thinking we got stuck with a muppet...
Astriel
Its just the commentators & press do my head in. You're gonna be labeled with this "never given him a chance" bs until he finally goes probably this time next year. Its totally unfair, i'd be disgusted at his appointment and i have no bad feelings towards Brum. He deserved a chance yes but were 2 thirds into the season and you still have N'Zogbia and Ireland on the bench and Heskey in midfield. What do they expect you to do, get Heskey's name on the back of your shirt? Tattoo his face on your buttocks? Jesus H Christ
HuddersfieldYiddo
He's had 24 games and the bulk of those has played 4-5-1, even at home even against swansea! I hate to say it, but the bluenoses were right about him! He's the most defensive manager I've ever seen! Hence the amount of draws!!

Some comments from the commentators in the first half... * "Heskey on the right side of midfield, that's a strange choice by McLeish" * "Another ball to nothing" * "That's pretty much to first time Villa have gotten over half way and we are 20mins in" * "Another lost header by Heskey" * "If I were a midfielder and saw Heskey start in front of me I'd have to take a serious look at myself" * "It seems Dunne and Collins are happy to sit on the edge of their 18 yard box" * "At this rate Keane probably can't wait to get back to LA" * "Premier league low of just 2 goals scored from set pieces" * "Robbie Keane and Darren Bent, all they are doing is chasing bodies back" * "Villa are playing like the nervous away team" I agree with every word and that's just a few, I could go on and on and on and on. And Mr Eck thinks we did well with a good game plan???? Deluded anyone??? Now we are a shade off a relegation battle. FFS Eck OUT!!!!!!!!!
AdzVilla11
Ok I am going to disagree with most comments....IMO if we had started with Ngog and Ireland we would have lost about 6-1...Eck (and I am not a massive fan) got the tactics right...i know all the anti;s will slate me... but Eck did exactly the same as Hodgson and MON..but we conceded a goal...then Carlos missed a sitter and Hart made a world class save from Bent (given didn't make any)...Yes it was defensive and dull but be real WE CANNOT TAKE THE LIKES OF CITY ON AT ENTERTAINING FOOTBALL..to do so would result in a very heavy defeat...although ity totally dominating we should have got a point then Eck's tactics would have been right...not his fan but get real
krfeskivilla
After commnets like that from the Idiot, itis quite obvious he has flipped his lid. Surely it's time for the nice men in white coats to take him far away once they have secured him in a straight jacket. A nice padded cell will be nice, somewhere where he can't harm anyone.
Pride of Lions
krfeskivilla can you honestly say that was a good game and we played well? What did you think of the starting lineup? As for not being able to take them on, I think your giving them far to much respect as Eck did. Yes they have a far better squad etc etc etc, we all know that but football is football and once you cross that white line anything can happen, especially at home in front of 40 thousand screaming fans (they would be if we had a go). Sorry mate they were terrible negative tactics from a home side as big as our, complete dire crap.
AdzVilla11
Was I the only one about 80 minutes in to the game wishing that Gary Neville was our manager. How far we have gone - BACKWARDS! Even my Mrs managed to point out that under MON all we could score from were set pieces! How can we be so useless at them at both ends now??
Chelt Villan
Interesting to hear the commentators commenting on the atmosphere. "the home fans are almost waiting to be entertained" they seemed to be saying. Looks like they were right, and in fact the fans had to wait over 90 minutes to be entertained!!!
thorpyuk
krfeskivilla - There is more than enough quality in our team to have a go at city, especially on home turf and especially seeing as they were missing one or two key players AND recently don't look as ruthless as they did before January. Swapping Heskey for N'zogbia and then actually having N'zogbia on the left and Albrighton on the bloody right in the starting line up would have made no difference. They barely got a touch anyway because our midfield seems to be void of any real involvement in games this season. And every time heskey actually got the ball he didn't know what to do with it. It would be wrong to blame Heskey because he is not a winger by trade, even he must have been wondering wtf that decision was all about. The only difference it would have made is that we would have had more attacking options, and guess what happened in the last 20 mins when he made the right changes - WE STARTED TO ATTACK!! Absolute shambles, embarrassing and not acceptable. To pick our Carlos after such impressive defensive displays recently is shameful. Shame on Mcliesh, total coward. How about blaming the fact he hasn't got the balls to start two natural wingers to supply one of English footballers most gifted centre forwards? Sick of this, it feels like sabotage from the Blues. I can't even believe this is happening. Worst home form in 25 years and now worse than the baggies.
Thom85
Thom85 hats off to you mate, couldn't have said it better myself
AdzVilla11
Krfesvilla, you've said the same rubbish in 3 articles now and No-one agrees even slightly. I know we were playing the top team but that's near enough how we set up against everyone bar the bottom 3. We can't even counterattack well do Eck is to blame for getting it all wrong. Mon and hodgson both countered well. We have not done so all season. EXCUSES MUST STOP.
Villan444
krfeskivilla your really ECK aren't you??? only he could come up with lame eckcuses like that becasue sorry that is just not good enough, to say we don't stand a chance is confidence sapping for players you can't tell players "your not good enough to beat them boys just defend all game and hope we don't get slaughtered" then not only for that game will the players feel demorlised but every game after that! look how everton played ffs ECK says thats how he wanted us to play but its obvios he didn't have a clue how, everton closed high up the pitch and KEPT THEIR STRICKERS IN THE MAN C HALF!!! Bent and Keane bearly passed our half they were just extra defenders and don't even get me started on Heskey ffs, McIdiot does not use tatics he uses ANTI TATICS his tatics are always to disrupt the opposition tatics and stop them from playing NOTHING to do with getting OUR TEAM to play, I started laughing my arse off when the sky reporter asked him how he's going to win the next game, his answer went something like this, "ah da ba ah ga eh just win" **** I N G TIT!!!
