Top 8 And Cup Run For McLeish

Top 8 And Cup Run For McLeish

Alex McLeish has said that Villa are aiming for a top eight - at least - finish in the league this season, but he can't ignore the FA Cup.

Speaking to the Official Site McLeish called the league 'huge' for Villa and said he wanted us to finish as high as possible in the second half of the season, but he also believes we can go on a run in the FA Cup if we prepare ourselves properly.

'The Premier League is huge to us. We'd like to climb the table as high as we can. We know the fan expectations of this club are that we should be fighting up towards that top eight spot at least. We have to have that mission for the second half of the season.'

But he is in love with the magic of the FA Cup.

'The magic of the FA Cup dictates you can't leave anything to chance and you have to go and do your utmost to get through to the next round. We have to go there without any fear and play to our capabilities.'

Seems to be a lot of this 'no fear' malarky going round at the moment.

i'd be satisfied with a top 10 finish and a good cup run but think he's got his work cut out

Let's face it, managers can't win: state that your aim is top eight and a cup run and you're delusional; say you're aiming for anything less and everyone attacks you for lack of ambition. Just saying ... And lol coe82 - does your post demonstrate a kind of humour that might not be understood by our cousins across the pond? :o)

I said from day 1 i would be very happy with a top 8 finish and a good cup run. Finishing below the top 10 is a failed season in my eyes, not got much hope for this cup run though, Arsenal away is going to be very difficult so im not expecting much.

just get totally stuck in today, that is all. As bobthebuilder says, what else is he expected to say when asked by the press? No, we aim to lose and don't want to be in the top 10!

The press and tv always ask inane questions. He is hardly likely to turn round and say no the board wont give me the money I need to make the team an outfit to challange for the top six is he ?. Or they dont trust me to spend it because I am tactically inept.
