'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Who Will Step Up?

Etouffe in the forum:

Over the last several weeks as Villa fans we have been hitting everyone with a stick!

Everyone has an opinion about GH or MON or what should have been done or has been done or what should be done by Randy.

It's also kind of a mixed bag on the senior players who are seen now as trouble makers or just not motivated enough to play for Villa any longer.

So as I hear all the moaning and complaining here and other places a question has come to mind (I know if you got to this point your screaming out with it already!)

Who in the team currently, that is not on the to fragile of an ego to preform list, should step up and become a positive vocal leader for the team?

Petrov, who has been the captain has not really said much and a lot have questioned his captain skills on the pitch.

Gabby, who has been injured a lot in recent months and is not the prolific goal scorer we want but never the less committed to the team, or so he says.

Ash, who really has loads of talent when he wants to and has been a consistent performer over the last few years.

Downing, who has been much better this year but still not really accepted by some of the fans.

One of the young guys, Marc, Barry, Eric, Ciaran, Jonathan, Nathan, Fabian?

The above players are basically what is the core of the team right now. I believe that one or two of these players could really take the bull by the horns and push the core of players on to the next level but who is going to have the balls to do it?

Right now would be a great time for one of them to just say, enough of this Crap, we are going to buy into the system and we are going to get others to buy into the system and we are going to push ahead come hell or high water.

Who is going to have the pride and the leadership to bring others with him no matter who the manger is!

Do we have someone in the group above? will be have to bring someone in? Hard to tell but I think more then anything else right now we need someone to step up and not with just quotes for the paper but someone who Commands and Demands respect by his team mates and for his team mates.

Lichaj, I don't know why.

Our leaders should be vocal now, Friedel, Collins, NRC and Ashley Young are out leaders on the pitch. They need to start motivating everyone! Would be nice to see a team huddle before kick off again to get everybody switched on from the start!
astvil123
I think Petrov and Hokey-Cokey will be important. We need fight in the middle of the arkand when fully fit these two can supply it.
keithlees1978
You really need Keane, Bentley and Krancjar, i tell you what, were do you a deal, 10m plus Young?? ;-)

Oh and do us a favour, b4 your completely implode, beat Citeh for us, rememebr it was them nicking Milner that started your decline!! or at the very least, snap tevez's leg!
liamyid
lay off laimyid. I think Freidel needs to be replaced with someone a bit more positive to inspire his defence i can't see where that replacement will come from though.

They should let a few decent fans in to talk to the team. Seriously. They should know WHY this matters to us so much. They should KNOW that the real world is far worse than what they have and that we have struggles in life, the football is meant to be our escape, not a misery. I'd take them to a brain or cancer ward and then maybe they would see how privileged they are. Gerard Houllier could do with similar (not the illness part, he has experience of that) but he needs to know exactly what Villa mean to us. Just had a long chat with a fan from South Africa (who spends literally thousands coming here) and have had texts and calls from all over... we are all a fantastic tribe, they need to respect us. That is what leadership should be...

For me the statement has to come from the back line, a good solid stand speaks volumes. Our most senior back there is Friedel, he needs to step it up! I'm extremely impressed with how Marc has been doing all his speaking on the pitch, others can certainly learn from the lad.

One thing I would like to add is that the Great Villa Fans need to believe that someone on the pitch and in the dressing room is demanding respect no only for the team but for them! I think JF has it right, show these players the life long fans that are in some cases battling for their life everyday but yet never miss seeing the team play or at least following along however they can and from where ever they are be it close by or far away. Give these players who are paid so much money the perspective they need to go out and fight for all it's worth every time they step on the pitch.

I'm not quite sure this is the problem mate. I dont think anyone is in the frame of mind to step up and do the shouting. That in itself will compromise the management as they are meant to be leaders. Petrov and Reo Coker have all the abilities to take charge on the pitch. They're just getting back and it must be frustrating for them to come back into a team already on the slide. The team as a whole should be recognising us fans - i dont see that ...very little evidence. Just a few months ago we were playing cup finals at wembley, challenging for champions league and getting to FA cup semi-finals. Milner and NoN went - apart from that the team is the same but the leaders in charge of the team dont seem to be getting it right. We're getting a raw deal as fans, unfortunately

reza, I would have to say that is one of the reasons why I put the post up to start with. No one seems to be in the right frame of mind. I'm not saying someone needs to be shouting or out of step with or over stepping management. However someone on the team needs to get the ball rolling. That could start with leading by example which other then the young guys who shouldn't have to at this stage have been the only ones doing that type of playing. I guess one of the things I am drawing on (God help me for using this reference) is American Football. On a lot of the winning teams there is One guy who is the standout leader on the field. Sure there are other guys who are also leaders but that one guy is the one that really makes everything else work and shows everyone else how to lead. Once you get buy in from your team mates and others start doing what that person does they become leaders as well.
etouffee
Get your point mate......

NRC is the most natural leader / fighter in the squad. None of the youngsters have enough respect from the other players (if the whole team were young I'd go for Clark) due to their age and experience. Ash works his socks off and we look a poorer team without him and I do think Downing has improved massively this year. We need organisation at the back which came from Dunne last year. Along with leadership and organisation we need a hefty slice of luck, something which seems to have deserted us for the time being, we have loads of nearly chances, almost great balls and calamitous mistakes at the back (as well as the usual crap refs) here's hoping for a change of fortune in 2011.

Downing has been our most consistent performer this season. Are there really Villa fans out here who have not accepted him? This is clearly a problem. I'm not saying the fans are to blame as we are not. However we should support every player who pulls on the shirt. How many times did MON talk about confidence. That was where his skills lay. Building confidence. Football is ALL ABOUT confidence and unfortunately our boys has visibly slipped match by match. It needs someone to rebuild it.
