Omar's Cummings To Villa

Nope never heard of him either, however Colorado Rapids 28 year old striker is coming for a trial at B6.

The Jamaican international has been targeted for a possible loan spell until the Rapids season starts in March although there is no indication that it would culminate in a permanent deal.

Managing director, Jeff Plush said on their Official Site:

'Aston Villa contacted us a few weeks ago with interest to see Omar up close. We felt it would be a good chance for him to get a leg up on pre season training and at the same time get the experience of training with a Premier League club.

'Omar is a Colorado Rapids player. We explained to Aston Villa that we would be open to discussing a loan agreement for Omar until our season starts on March 19 if it benefited Omar and the Rapids.'

The Rapids won the MLS Cup, with Cummings netting 14 goals, last season but if the loan works out it sounds like they'd play hard ball if we were interested.

'It would take Villa or any club making a significant offer for us to even consider transferring Omar,' Plush added.

Define significant?

I just read your article about Omar Cummings and I decided to e-mail you a few thoughts as I can't comment. Basically, I'm an English sports journalist working, for the season, in Jamaica. I don't know a huge amount about Cummings as he plays in the MLS but I've seen him playing a few times for the national team so I guess I'm in a position to shed some light on him for you. Don't worry, he is a good player, certainly better than Heskey! He has a bit of pace and, like most Jamaicans, has decent feet too. He is also a decent finisher. The Jamaican team just won the Caribbean Cup and although he wasn't the star he was solid enough, starting a couple of games and scoring a couple of goals.

The trouble is some Jamaicans in the past have had trouble settling in Europe and adapting to the style of play, as well as having what are often perceived as 'attitude problems' which are actually down to simple Jamaican-ness. He has spent a long time in America though so it might not be an issue, but unfortunately it seems that, for whatever reason, talent alone is too often not enough for Jamaican players in Europe so his trial is far from guaranteed to be a success. Personally I hope it works out for him and Villa as I'd be very interested to see how he does in our Premier League and I would love to see him make a positive impact. There are work permit restrictions which mean that if the Jamaican national team is outside the top 70 in the world the players can't move to England; following the Caribbean Cup win last month they moved up to 58 so success for Cummings could see a few of his team mates following him over too.

Like I said, I don't know a huge amount about him but I hope I may have helped slightly. I'll be keeping a close eye on how he does over with you lot.

Wikipeadia: Cummings was selected by the Colorado Rapids in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft as a Round 3, number 31 overall pick. Omar began his career with Colorado as reserve player but by the 2008 season established himself as a first choice striker, forming a prolific partnership with Conor Casey. After a solid season in 2008 in which Cummings appeared in 26 league matches scoring 6 goals and recording 4 assists, he had a break-out season in 2009 appearing in 28 league matches in which he scored 8 goals and an MLS season high 12 assists. Omar's 88' equalizer against Real Salt Lake was voted as the Goal of the Week for Week 12 of the 2009 MLS Season. After a strong 2009 season, Cummings started 2010 on a slow note, however following the 2010 World Cup break Cummings began scoring several sensational goals for the Rapids. On September 4, 2010 Cummings scored a pair of goals to help the Rapids to a 3-0 victory over Chivas USA at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The performance led to him being voted as Major League Soccer Player of the Week for week 23 of the MLS season by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).[1] His goalscoring form has spurred interest from clubs in Mexico and England pursuing his services. Cummings regained his deft scoring form as the 2010 MLS season progressed, leading the Colorado Rapids back to the MLS playoffs after a four year absence.

What does he have to do to be better than what we have now?
Gordonsleftboot
@gordonsleftboot: In Gabby's case, just score one PL goal! In Heskeys case, manage more than 30 mins in a game without receiveing an injury that needs weeks mend, in JC's case, appear more than twice in 10 matches.... so not much really !

Just watched the usual YouTube montage and to be fair he looks fairly good, and he's got nothing to lose playing for the pile of *****e that we've become so fingers crossed he'll do a job.

I'll chime in as I might be one of the few that has seen him play. I've probably watched him start about a dozen games for The Rapids and I can't remember a time when he didn't impress me. However, that was in the MLS. He has a real nose for goal and, most importantly, Omar is the kind of player that can turn and shoot in tight spaces. That is a quality everyone on our squad lacks right now. He doesn't do a whole lot in the air so he would be much like Gabby and Fonz when we resort to crosses from out wide but if Houllier stays and we continue to try and play his way then Omar is workable in that system. He's probably destined to be someone who comes off the bench if we buy another quality striker.

Is this our big international proven goalscorer houllier?????? Dear oh dear where is our beloved club heading? From top4 candidates to playing swansea on a friday night???? Lerner is minted! Invest now or were gonna be the second rubbish sports team he owns!

Jeez - as I said in the thread in the forum - when sked who will be our first signing - I said - who gives a F***. because no matter who we sign - the fans will slag him off without even giving him a chance (and slag the manger too). Where did we get Dwight Yorke from ? - I bet if this forum had been around then - he would have been slagged off even before he kicked ball because he was an uknown kid from the West Indies. The guy is coming on loan - he could turn out to be tonic but then he's already been written off as not good enough for Villa. We are NOT going to get WORLD CLASS 20 goals a season player at this moment in time. Idespair sometimes. IF (and I know it's a big IF) he turns out to be good loan and scores some goals (remember what they are?) bet you lot would change your tunes sharpish!!! No matter who we get - back him 100% - while he wears the shirt (as long as he wears it with pride and gives 100% to it!)

This guy looks good. Makes as many goal assists as he does goals. Scores from tight angles and long distance but also a poacher. A perfect partner for Gabby. Let me know what you think guys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5Ty0hAKRCY&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I don't see the harm in giving the guy a trial but this is a completely different scenario to Dwight Yorke who was 17 when we signed him. This guy is 28 and has never played football at a good level. The chances of him suddenly becoming an effective player at Premiership level are tiny so I hope that GH is looking at much better players than him.
