'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Tom Hopkinson of The People say that Manchester United will test the resolve of Aston Villa and bid £20million for Ashley Young.

With just one year left on his contract, what should Villa do, let the player who put contract negotiations on hold to concentrate on his football run down his contract and go with no value at all? Or sell at the best price, which realistically due to the timing would be around £20million I would guess?

Players hold all the power, no matter how angry you or me get at our Club 'allowing` them to leave, the balance of power is pathetic in the game now (thanks to this mad Bosman ruling) and they can move from club to club whenever they throw their dummy out of the pram and choose to.

Football really has gone up its own arse since the start of the Premier League and the SKY money, not to mention top four qualification for a so called 'champions league` and the silly money by Chelsea and now Manchester City... I digress...!

Spurs, Liverpool and Manchester City have all also been linked.

Another link, this time in the ever reliable, cough, News of the World says that West Ham want Steve Sidwell. I`m sure we all agree, they can have him, he`s been woeful (apart from his great debut goal up at Wigan) since he joined us from Chelsea. Tara a bit Sidders, thanks for the lack of effort! I believe this is reported to be a loan until the end of Sidders contract and then he can sign with them permanently. Makes sense as I can`t see him ever getting near our first team again.

Small mention in NotW that we want Momo Sissoko from Juventus, others also linked including Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid. Older link to him: 25-year-old Juventus midfielder Momo Sissoko Click Here

And I`ve saved the very worst until last.

Take a deep breath....

Alan Nixon of The People has an article linking us with Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton. NO.... simply just NO. We need a tough midfield general and he is that at times but he can`t control himself on or off the pitch and is surely not the sort of player we would want at Villa Park?

We were linked with him before and I remember saying how much this would stretch my support, I`d be quite happy for the first time in my life to openly boo a player in claret and blue. I have no time for this lad, he`s had a chance, a second chance and now is onto about his sixth chance. He will never learn and will bring this club into disrepute just like he has the others he has played for.

Love Sidwell to go to West Ham but a firm no to Barton. The rest, I haven't got a clue!

Joey Barton is a disgrace to humanity and everytime I see him I am ashamed to be of the same species. He makes me question the theory of evolution and if I see him being unveiled holding a Villa shirt aloft I will be sick. Over the top? No I don't think so.

how we progress through the rest of the season should really determine Ash's future. I personally feel that Ash does have a soft spot for villa. But if he wants to be playing for england regularly he needs to prove he can cut it with the bug guns. Villa have to push on up to hit the top four and nothing less will do for the guy. If we can make it there he'll stick around, on the other hand if we're hovering around mid table by the end of this season i think we should get our money worth and give him our best well wishes.

or at least an improvement that gives us a reason to hold on for the final year of his contract.

And the sad thing is, Barton is a very decent player. But I've never seen anyone in my life have so many second chances and come out with the same old "I'm a changed man" crap, to go on and completely screw everything up only weeks later. We could do with someone like him, just not him.

I will happily march on Villa Park in protest if it looks like we are even close to signing Barton. I despise the man. He is a thug and someone I would NOT for a second want to see in a Villa shirt. I'm sure it wont happen but if it does.....!!! :(

Lurman, well said about Young. If he was to leave to join Man Utd, I'm sure none of us could really complain. If it was a Man city/Spurs type team, that'd be a different story.

There's no doubt that the bloke is an ar$ehole but how many of us work with ar$eholes everyday? I don't want the guy but not because he's a bad player and if he came I'd hope we'd get better as a team (which ironically I really think we would). I have to say that a lot of the responses above are highly vitriolic though and about something which is just a rumour from a London based 'hack' (and not a very good one at that)... from, of all places, 'The People'. Who buys that rag nowadays? To sum up, good player who no one wants because he's an ar$ehole, but someone I'd support IF he ever wore the mighty claret and blue!

I have to agree with CDX_Villa re: Young, apart from the valuation, i'd be dissapointed if we sold him for anything less than 20Mil and Nzogbia would be a decent replacement.

to everyone touting nzogbia as a replacement for young - stop reading the papers and actually watch them play. Nzogbia isn't fit to lace young's boots. If he doesn't want to stay them we have to sell but we should be aiming higher than average Wigan players for replacements. As for Barton - hell no! Scott Parker all the way.

Barton. No. Can't believe Houllier would contemplate.

Nzogbia Qui! Barton, Non! Although having said that Joey Barton has played some great football the past 2 seaons, but he isn't at all the type of player that Houllier wants. But I can believe he is after Nzogbia as he knows him from the French national team. I think he can be a brilliant addition, but he is a bit like JC, he has good and bad games, seems to depend on his moods!
