Relief And Pride - The Baggies Verdict

Gerard Houllier has praised the team for digging deep in our derby victory over the Boggies today, and admitted that the 3 points were a big relief.

Speaking on the Official Site after our 2-1 victory lifted us to the dizzying heights of 13th place, Houllier said the whole camp felt relieved at the final whistle and the win should result in the boys having far more confidence when we face off against Wigan.

I don't think the relief is confined to the players to be honest, the final 10 minutes were a nightmare and even more so once Albion got their consolation, as it really did look like they would draw level.

But 3 points in a derby is all that matters, especially with how our season has been going so far.

'The victory gave us the feeling of relief. I think the defeat at Liverpool hurt us, more by the way we lost rather than the score.'

As for the response and the game itself, Houllier was pleased with the way the players stepped up and battled during the game.

'I must say I was pleased and proud of the attitude. When you're going through a bad patch, you need to be more focused. I was very proud of their response.'

Is this where our season starts to come together, the turning of the corner moment? Wigan will be equally as tough a match, and I doubt it'll be very pretty but it's another game we simply cannot afford to lose.

If we beat Wigan we are suddenly talking about Europe again, some people are so fickle. Lets drop all this nonsense about Houllier being right for the job or not and get behind this wonderful group of talented young lads. Lichaj was outstanding today considering it was his first PL start. I loved young as Captain he worked hard today and you could see him lifting the lads up after they scored.

Well played Eric Lichaj...agreed matty , thought young responded to the captaincy well, clearly meant a lot to him...nice to see cuellar back, didnt think Houllier would have the minerals to drop Dunne...also I think Hogg could become a useful player...nice to see emile back, his presence does help us a lot, oh stuff it, well done to them all, it was always going to be a little edgey, but they hung in their got the goal then 2nd half controlled most of the game...well done boys a much needed 3 points!

Eric Lichaj was outstanding today and should be the next youngster rewarded with a new contract, it would be awful if luke young was chosen ahead of him next week.

I reckon that's the last we'll ever see of Steven Ireland (last Monday). I would bet on a 'bust-up'. 100%.

I don't see it being anything else other than a bust up because he wasn't to bad against liverpool and herd was picked for the bench over him.

He wasn't so bad, but he's supposed to be very good. Glad Herd got picked ahead of him! Great show of character today against a very handy WBA team!

Changes were needed to a leaky defence and with Luke Young injured it gave GH a chance to also drop Dunne in for Cuellar, maybe that will focus the players that only those who perform are guaranteed a start. Downing was bright again and another good game for Albie. thought Ash was typically in and out again but had more desire as captain. Reo's first touch was to give it away, funny but predictable. Heskey did ok but could have done more in front of goal but he looked like he lacked match fitness given his lay off. Ireland needs to go and so does Carew with a keeper coming in for Friddy and a striker in form hopefully. Would like Shay Given tbh, he's still a top keeper and maybe Rodagella? Well done on the win though boys and we needed it badly. UTV.

I believe Holte End Dan that young Eric signed a new three year extended deal fairly recently. He certainly played well today, caught out a couple of times but that's to be expected. He surprised me. I've never particularly rated him, being far from impressed after the number of times I'd seen him perform for the reserves, but he certainly provided me with food for thought throughout the ninety minutes yesterday.

Glensider - agreed and his throw in will have a bid from Stoke on the way soon. Seriously seemed to me that his throw surprised his team mates at first too.

Mattyh. I wish my optimism was as high as yours, but alas it's nowhere near, and the only way we're getting into Europe this year is if we write a f*****g good song!

we could sneak Europe eltoro, but not that bothered if we don't as the Europa seems so downgraded these days anyway. More interested in the transition moving apace and for the summer spending to get fully ready for next season, shame this season is sort of a 'write off' but there you go, that is what happens when a manager leaves you in the lurch so close to a new season. Jan will be interesting but I'm not sure how much quality will really be available

What a relief, i thought that the atmosphere inside Villa Park was one of relief. I thought the team played better as the game went on,after a dodgy first 20 or so minutes. I thought we played as a team, with the exception of Warnock, who i thought was again very poor, and i think that he has not played well since he was called up to play for England. I was so pleased for Gerard Houllier. I believe that he is the right man for the job and we have got to give him time. I agree with The Fear.
