The Houllier Situation

It`s a funny old game. Already some have made up their mind about our manager Gerard Houllier despite the injuries he`s had to face + the fact he`s not had time to stamp his identity on the team yet with any purchases.

Anyway, our latest poll asks what you think of the situation.

There is also a fairly angry and frank thread in the forum, probably not for the feint hearted...! Click Here for page one of 21 (so far) pages

For me, he has to have time - he will have time as our club aren`t going to be that reactionary and must understand the constraints with all these injuries surely? Of course. Hey, even Deadly Doug Ellis would not have got rid of a manager within a few months.

I'm sure MON would also have struggled with all these injuries as would any other manager?

It's incredible that we're even being asked to vote on this! Anyone with half a brain can surely understand what he's got to deal with. We're down to the bare bones and what has that got to do with Gerard??? Give the poor bloke a chance to make the team his own. Not even worth talking about really is it?
olofthegreat
Look at his record. Best manager we've had for a long time
medzy
Pointless debate. He's a proven manager in France and England. You don't win titles in France unless you've got something about you. I'm backing him.

Might be our training regime. Might not be. Teams have horrendous runs of injuries - we were exceptionally lucky with injuries under MON. If GH had a reputation of running players into the ground then I could definitely agree. And how can flu or appendicitus etc. really be blamed on our training regime? And Ramos had 0 premier league experience. GH has had a number of fairly successful seasons at Liverpool. Let me ask the final question - who do we replace him with and would you risk the turmoil that a change in manager causes with us only 3 points above the relegation zone?

Boreing lets move on people that hate him are mugs, i agree with olofthegreat - PiperUK and Medzy - I like GH and think he is an excelent manager we all said thi sbout MON when we wernt getting anywhere and he wernt buying anyone, get a grip

what the hell is wrong with villa fans! we have the best manager we've ever had who needs to start from scratch, we're actually playing attractive football at last and 2 blue noses have said to me this week that we played them off the park so give the bloke a chance. MON had taken us as far as his ability allowed and the fans were calling for his head and then he dropped us in the s**t without hesitation as he couldn't waste money on unproven players. Even Ferguson was considered hopeless when he took over Man U so instead of whingeing get behind the manager and team!!!!!
cynicalone
We were the most counter attacking team in the premiership and teams had figured us out and we were getting progressivley worse. The football is improving, alot of the youngsters would have never got a chance under MoN.If the players are not able to cope with the training reigeime maybe their not up to the task of playing top flight professional football.I think Houllier is exactly what we need.
Pking
I don't give a flying *****e about what football we play if we get relegated!!? Why would we want to build again cynicalalone???? Are you mad? We had a great, 6th placed team that needed to move forward in a direction that made sense playing football that won us football matched. whats wrong with villa fans is hounding out O'Neill a manager that actually did brilliantly and bringing in a manager that can't even beat our recently championship level local rivals. Two blue noses said something nice about villa did they? Thats because they won!!

simonbigron ur the type of fan we need to rid ourselves of...

MON did a brilliant job and I miss him but in saying that he can't be forgiven for dumping us like he did at that point in time. Time with tell with GH and that's exactly what he needs TIME. I don't agree we are playing our best football as some are saying but I can see what he's trying to do. The fact is we don't have the cattle on the park to play the way he wants us to yet. This is the hardest league in the world, let him buy a few players, get the injured lads back on the park and then we can start judging him. I'm not happy with the results like everyone else but for now we all need to get behind GH, the boys, the club and all push in the one direction.

Best player sold, no pre-season, change of management, coaches & all backroom staff, no players brought, very difficult league, lots of injuries, change of playing style etc etc......Oh & ultimately no magic wand, give the man a chance ffs, their is plenty of time to turn this around & the good thing is cause of the situation he has been able to view & play almost every player available to us so will have a good idea of what he wants or needs prior to Jan & more importantly next seasons transfer window....He arrived cause their was not really anyone else available & his record is superb, in ours & other countries...Frustrating, but keep your nerve Villa fans!!!

Although I'm extremely disappointed with our season so far I don't think getting rid of GH is the solution. For better or worse he is our manager. However, to say he's a better manager than MON is to fly in the face of reality. Why do we have so many players injured or 'not feeling too well'? Maybe because under MON 'not feeling too well' would have led to three months in the stiffs. GH's formations leave me dumbstruck. One up against Blooze at home? One up away? If we are going to play with wingers we have to have players in the middle to profit from it. As I've said before, it really worries me. Playing pretty football all the way into the second division. Come on Gerrard, wake up!

It's the Houlier-haters vs the MON-haters. That argument is never going to go anywhere. Boring. In my experience the following are true: No club gets anywhere if they keep changing manager. MON left Villa, he wasn't sacked. And I remember having a fantastic time as a fan when the Villa were in Division 3.
