Petrov Aims For New Year Return

Stiliyan Petrov has said that he has set his sights on returning early in the New Year and hopes to be back for the Carling Cup Semi's should we progress on Wednesday.

Speaking to the The Independent Stan admitted that he was hopeful he would be back nice and early and that his recovery from his knee injury was going well, but that more importantly he is hoping to step up his rehab work this week.

'It's difficult to say when I will be fit to play again, but I'm making steady progress. With a bit of luck, I should be back early in the New Year.'

Petrov is one of a number of players who would love nothing more than to put last year's disappointment behind them and give a fair showing of themselves in this year's final (dare I say see a fair refereeing performance?) but he knows the clash against Small Heath isn't going to be easy.

'We would love to go back to Wembley and lift the trophy this time. Overcoming Birmingham will not be easy, they showed against Chelsea last week that they are capable of matching the best. BUT the same can be said of us.'

Ultimately comes down to who has their day on Wednesday doesn't it. Do we give a United first half or an Arsenal one?

No thanks. Want the team to improve. Petrov's absence is not why we are struggling right now.

I can see Blues turning us over - I dont know if the youngsters are ready for it!! Would love to see Downing left, Young right and Warnock and L Young getting forward and overlapping. I have been Carews BIGGEST critic this season and think he has been a disgrace for most of 2010 - lazy disinterested. But Johnson and Dann will take some beating - him up top would work IF we have good wide play. On Petrov.....well Id be happier with Bannan spraying the balls to the wide men rather than him!

i cant wait for Petrov to return coz then we can put him in the midfield with Pires and it will be like an OPA gathering, wouldnt that be nice, On a serious note we need the experienced players back so the young ones can learn and be part of an experienced team. Im confident we will do the SCUMMY BLUES and go on to win the cup. VILLA TILL I DIE

he does bring something extra to the team I think, he breaks up play etc. Not sure how many more seasons we've got him but do think with the kids coming through he has been missed this season since his injury.

IMO Petrov is the most important part of the Villa team, and we have missed him more than any of the other injured players. I said at the time of his injury we would realise how important he was in his absence. Obviously the loss of Reo Coker made the situation doubly worse, but Petrov is excellent positionally, breaks up play well and keeps the team in possession of the ball.
