Pires In Reserves A Surreal Experience

Shane Lowry has admitted that seeing Robert Pires line up yesterday for the reserves clash against the Boggies was quite surreal.

Speaking on the Official Site following the 1-1 draw, Lowry said it was clear that Pires had 'class written all over him' and he's thinks he'll have a fantastic effect on all the younger folks at the club who'll be able to learn from him in training.

'He's unbelievable, he's won the World Cup, he's played with people like Zidane, he has got class written all over him.'

Seeing Pires run out for the behind closed door clash, Lowry reiterated the comments of others for the effect that Pires can have on the younger chaps.

'It is a bit surreal seeing him play against West Brom reserves at Bodymoor on a disgusting day at 12 in the afternoon. If he has two or three people on him, he is still comfortable on the ball. He is going to be a great asset to the team, especially the young players.'

After the recent promotions of the likes of Bannan and others to the first team, Lowry finds himself in the proud position of reserves skipper this season and his comments on the game yesterday explain perfectly the attitude that Kevin MacDonald has instilled in them over the years.

Villa are top of the Southern reserve league, and have both the promotions of core players to the first team to deal with but also the introduction of the next batch of players from the Academy, so few fans would forgive them a period of transition and those that expected that have been pleasantly surprised by the results so far. The second string are unbeaten following the loss on the opening day of the season, yet Lowry was still disappointed by the result.

'To be honest I am a bit disappointed with the result, at times the passing was a bit sloppy and we didn't look as strong defensively as we have in the last four games, so I'd say it was two points lost rather than one gained.'

Is it any wonder KevMac has them going for four consecutive reserve titles with players with that kind of attitude!

We've given up worrying about you Mike. I think that we've all come to the same conclusion. You're past saving! Good positive comments from young Shane, its good to see that the younger lads are thriving on the experience of having Robert Pires working alongside them. He has a lot to offer, so hopefully many of our lads will benefit from just being around the guy. If they can pick up some of his good habits, and benefit from his quality and professionalism, then Houlliers decision to bring the ex-Gunner to Brummagem B6 will be fully justified. A reseve team game will have helped Pires to get more match ready of course, and who knows, maybe his name will be making the headlines on Sunday morning for turning over his old cronies. Stranger things have happened, and all the ingredients are certainly there for a fairy tale return to the premier league this weekend, for the highly talented Frenchman.
