Villa Fan - This WILL Be A Good Season

Nice positive post from stennyvilla:

I think the team and Houllier are heading decisively in the right direction.

This could be the season I've been waiting for. A 'transitional' season where we start to play proper football on the ground, making max advantage of out talented youngsters would do me - but there is plenty of time to turn things round in the League and do better than that.

We look with added punch up front as if we can challenge Liverpool and Bolton for another 6th place finish - and this could then be the start of bigger things to come.

Lets be clear, we were the better team in each of the last 3 away games and deserved more like 7 points rather than one. Throw in last weeks Villa Park robbery and we could be on the heels of the top 4 if the luck had run for us rather than against us. And that's before the benefits of further improvements from Gerard who massively impresses me. He is giving everyone a chance - but if you do not deliver you will not keep your place for long. He sees the game most fans see.

Yes there are still downsides as to why we lost:

Stupid free kicks unnecessarily given away continue - with Warnock a consistently guilty party.

Gabby has not been seen enough for Houllier to judge and is been given his chance - but can only show that despite his undoubted plusses he adds to the team - being a clinical finisher is not one of them.

The Fonz must get a proper run. He will deliver. He makes the right runs, he takes up the right positions - he just looks like a real striker to me. There is no one else and unless Gerard unearths someone in January he will be our best bet for this season - and certainly in my mind for the next half dozen games.

Ireland needs to improve or he will be out.

But so so many plusses. We are unlucky. We might easily lose to Arsenal next week, but should keep the faith. It will be followed by wins at the Sty and at home to the Albion , and we will press on from there.

This is going to be a good season. We are going to progress. We are going to entertain. Well played Villa, we are on the right tracks.

disagree Wurzel. Not sure what Houllier is meant to do right now, the injury situation is freaky, he is though at least trying to get them to pass the ball about, I agree as above that Fonz gets in the right positions and looks a great prospect but at the moment we are having to play too many youngsters without the experience.

we're going to struggle given our poor showing vs blackburn! Okay we can now pass but lack creativity in front of goal and a proven fox in the box to finish things. Very mediocre atm :-(

Great article. We played poor today but things can change so quick in the EPL. KEEP THE FAITH. Cheaper season tickets in the Npower league aswell..

We are going to keep on 'passing the ball around' right into the second division. Wake up and see what is right in front of your noses. To claim we were unlucky against a team like Blackburn is nonsense. We weren't good enough. That's right, not good enough to beat Blackburn. Don't talk to me about challenging for sixth. Sixteenth more like. Pretty football - my ****.

We might have played some nice football today but too much in my opinion. Didn't get the ball over when it mattered, and we didn't score. Playing nice football is good, but results are what matters.

I'd be more worried if it wasn't for the fact that this is one bizzare year. 3 points and we're 7th, drop 3 points and we're in the relegation zone. We've still got the opportunity to catch up!

"why do we just hoof it forward" - the one phrase that was not in the match thread today, must mean we are doing the right thing.

Am I the only person who thinks we might be passing it a little too much? all the passing is great but the team need to recognize set plays and work with them. the strikers need to know when a cross is gonna happen so they can be the first to react. i mean its all easy to say these things than to put them into practise but it just looks to me like for all our passing there's no recognition in who's supposed to be setting up a chance for who... it kinda looks like there's just taking chance when they find one instead of actually creating one.

A striker and a battler in midfield is needed urgently... Sidwell, coker, carew must go... alot still needs to change... we are still capable of finishing top 7 but houllier is working with players who arnt good enough for the club... the young players and a select few others are worthy but theres alot of dead wood that needs clearing out... Next year will be our year... the league this season is a throw away aim for a cup...

I'm sorry to say. but I didn't see much in the positive department. but that might be due to turning the *****e off when we went 2-0 down, even in the 1st half I found myself going on confused.com (no pun intended) to sort out my car insurance! it don't get much worse than that, last week I raved about us. even if we had lost to utd it wouldn't have made one ounce of difference, but this week jesus come off it people that was *****in dire, players out of position, dunne is a calamity. warnock too. even friedel was poor, gabby was dreadfull, don't even mention ireland, so for me threre where no positives, but even saying that, it dosen't mean the seasons over! but I just wish people would see it for what it was, last week POSITIVE, yesterday. *****in rubbish.
