Former Arsenal Midfielder To Sign + Transfer News

Good grief, I thought I`d done all the transfer talk for today: Does Ireland Need Saving? John Carew To Italy?

Apparently not as there is now loads more gossip! I do like a good old football gossip, I know most of it turns to pants but hey, it keeps us occupied doesn`t it?

Gerard Houllier has ruled out a move for Michael Owen in January.

The Guardian quote the Villa boss saying 'No, no. In terms of some strikers Emile and John will come back. There is no point.'

He does admit that he wants to sign 'one or two` players in January though. Houllier had said previously he was interested in Owen but Sir Alex Chewalot said he`d not be letting the striker go.

Houllier, though, did admit that he wants to sign 'one or two players in January'.

One that Gerard would go for by the looks of things is Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and my mate CustardCream says if we get the French international, he`ll kiss Gerard smack on the lips!

SkySports quote Houllier as saying he`d 'sign him tomorrow' if available.

Apparently he might be available on loan in January. Houllier told L'Equipe: 'If Karim wants to come and play at Aston Villa, we would sign him tomorrow. We are keen to offer him more first-team opportunities.'

A gossip site has us linked to 19-year-old Ignjovski who is currently on loan at AS Monaco. He is rated at around 6million Euro`s.

Another link says we are after former Arsenal maestro Robert Pires. lequipe say (rough google translation) that the 37-year-old will sign a month by month deal to take him to January when we might have an option to keep him until the end of the season.

Pires has been keeping fit training at his former club Arsenal.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says Pires would do a good job for Villa. 'To me, before his knee injury, Pires was the best left attacking midfielder in the world,' Wenger told L'Equipe. 'With us he was just flying. Even if he has lost the speed of his youth, he can still help at Aston Villa thanks to his knowledge of the game.'

Might be good for the kids to learn off him as well?

More on Carew. His agent Per A Flod told calciomercato.com: 'I am currently in Japan and must admit it is an attractive market for John.' Maybe whilst he is under contract to Villa and being paid whilst once again injured, his agent could shut his mouth? Just a thought.

He would survive for 20-30 mins here and there - why not? Kevin Phillips is in his 50's and he's still Blues highest scorer.

Why not pires? he would add experience to a young squad and could probably do a job as a player/coach. Benzema i highly doubt we will get him but if we do wow.

Am I being too optimistic in hoping that there could be real substance in the Benzema rumour? I have a good feeling that it is a move which could suit all parties, and would give us some serious firepower. Warming to the idea of Pires. Brilliant on the training ground, and if we had him on Saturday to bring on for the last ten minutes might his experience and composure made a difference? Barry Bannan is NOT going to be able to play every minute of every game. He is young, he will need to be rested. At present Ireland seems to be out of favour, so why not Pires? Short term loan, nothing to lose?

I was chatting with a buddy in the pub the other day about Benzema and how he's not getting a game and that Houllier used to be his boss at Lyon and Madrid obviously would rather loan him than sell him to a Euro rival and that 'you never know'... that kind of conversation. Now, having been a journalist and still getting the odd article published here and there, it kind of strikes me that some sod has had the same conversation and has decided to publish it. Much as I would love it to be true, I don't think I'll get me knickers in a twist until the lad is draped in the claret and blue.

Aren't there actually quotes from Houllier saying he IS interested in Benzema? Understand your point Rawlie, but when the manager confirms he is interested.......? Surely we have to be lucky some time?

Shrewd piece of business in my opinion. The speed of his prime may no longer be evident, but you dont lose the talent or quality. Peter Broadbent or Davie Gibson anyone? They performed specific and important roles at a difficult time for the club, despite signing for us at a time when many suggested they were way past their best.
