Aston Villa Stats Update

Stats update!

Stats update! Can the figures do the talking? Hey fellow Villans.

Thought I'd gather a few stats together from the last 3 season, and this one to see if it can tell us anything we don't already know!!

Firstly, we are obviously in a season of transition.

MON took us to 3 consecutive 6th place finishes, and although opinion is divided on the subject, we now find ourselves in a season of change - for good or for bad!

So.. Here's 'the lowdown' on where we are 10 games into the new season:

2010/2011:
points: 12,
scored: 9,
conceded: 13

2009/2010:
points 18,
scored 14,
conceded: 9

2008/2009:
points 20,
scored 19,
conceded: 12

2007/2008:
points 15,
scored 14,
conceded: 13

I think for me, what is obvious is that (the 6-goal aberration aside) our defence is excellent. Maybe with the exception of a new goalie before the following season? Or will Friedel still be in the sticks next year?

What is also sadly obvious is that we are not much of a creative threat thus far this season. we have a number of issues -

1) gabby being injured,
2) Carew being off form,
3) Heskey,
and 4) Young playing up front and not on the wing.

I was ashamed with us playing a 5-man defence yesterday against the blues, and therefore unsurprised with the 0-0 result.

For me, young needs to go back on the left, with Marc on the right, and a new quality forward partnering Gabby up front - someone who can head the ball as a large part of our game is reliant on crosses into the box. We're still early into the season - only just over a quarter of the games have gone, but we certainly need to improve from where we are, and I'm sure we shall!

UTV!

rubbish... downing has been in fine form and young should stay where his is. reo-coker is our only strong and consistent centre mid. we need another one. Ireland has to come good or clark should be given another go. carew is out of form but in his 10 mins on sunday we saw him se up clark beautifully. Carew will come good i know it.

Stewart Downing surely has to remain as is, i.e., out wide left. He has been one of the success stories of our somewhat mediocre season to date. He whips in better crosses than does Ashley Young, indeed all that is missing right now, is a quality proven finisher or two, ready and willing to get in on the end of the chances being created by Stewart and Marc Albrighton. We have two quality wide-men, but no end product.

Goalscoring is definitely where our number one failing lies. We put so much pressure on ourselves because we are unable to finish the opposition off when we are dominating play. Chances are being taken, just not being put away. Nine goals scored to date is a very poor return, and until that failing is rectified, January at the earliest, we'll continue to struggle.
