Luke Young - The Prem Is Not Getting Dirtier

Luke Young - The Prem Is Not Getting Dirtier

It's Luke Young day on the Official Site, and here our right back dismisses the speculation that the Premiership is becoming more dirty.

There have been a number of higher profile tackle related injuries in the few short months of this season, the Karl Henry tackle, Ben Arfa's broken leg and at least as the press and pundits like to paint it such things are regular occurrences during games whereas in the old days an injury like Eduardo's stood out because it was so rare.

It's not quite the truth but rarely does truth have to impinge on commentary or reporting thesedays!

It seems this fact isn't lost on our right back who points out that 'it is really' difficult to put in the perfect tackle given the speed of the game now, and unfortunately, just like football always has been, serious injuries are unavoidable because it's a contact sport and if you don't like that then take up Aussie Rules or Scrabble - even if that's not quite the politically correct thing to say.

Then again, neither is 'stop playing a girl' or 'football's a man's game' yet they still apply to those players who fall over at every opportunity or whinge like little 3 yr olds when they get tackled.

The difference is 10 years ago or more those players who broke a nail didn't scream like they'd just broken their leg but I'm slowly going off point here....back to Luke Young.

'People are looking at the tackle and kind of want to punish it depending on how long the player is out for. The De Jong tackle wasn't a great tackle but if the guy gets up nobody really talks about it. Because he's unfortunately broken his leg it makes it a bigger situation.'

Luke is right when he adds the difference between a hard but fair challenge and a horror tackle can be a fraction of a second. It's not difficult to see the blatant ones designed to take a player out and you wonder given so many dodgy fouls are given - how many times are the ref's unfortunately led by the level of the scream and shout especially when you think of those tackles that should be straight yellows but the player gets up without moaning?

'You can be literally a split second away from making a great tackle that then looks horrific on the screen. You're not trying to hurt someone but the game is so quick. If you've got a winger who can do a hundred metres in 11 seconds and you're a split second out it can look terrible on TV, especially when you slow the footage down.'

So are tackles getting worse, I doubt it. Are things jumped on because it's nice and controversial far more than ever before...the answer to that should be a no brainer really.

I dont think football is getting dirtier, I think the refs are being conned too often so when there is a fair but hard challenge the ref is forced to send the player off because the opposition is saying it was dangerous.

Badge ... I agree the pitch contributes, but not sure its too hard, I think its more to do with the mix of grass/synthetic ---- less movement/sliding on the grass when you get clattered......
