Fieldy: As Ash headed off on England duty he had words of praise for new manager Gerard Houllier and again restated his confidence in a new deal being done. Speaking to SSN Ashley again said he was happy at the club, and that he'd been impressed by the new managerial appointment and he liked the plans that the club have for pushing on in both the league but also in terms of securing some long needed silverware. Looks like, at last, training is more interesting for the players and also a bit more brutal. I'll keep my thoughts on the previous training and coaches to myself at this stage I think, why look back when you can look ahead? However from the comments coming out of Bodymoor Heath both publicly and privately these days, the players seem far more engaged and are being worked far harder. Maybe the end of the 60 minute games for some players is close? Maybe the team will be able to play two good halves instead of the great start and flagging? Maybe even, dare we hope, the team will be able to get through a whole season, not just up to February!? Happy days! Full article: Variety Is The Spice Of Life For Villa Players
Aaron Lennon is the latest England player forced out of the squad to face Montenegro in next weeks Euro 2012 qualifier. Having complained of a sore back on Friday following further tests today it was decided to release the Spurs man from the squad so he could go back to Spurs for further treatment. His place has been taken by Stewart Downing, who returns to the England set-up for the first time since a friendly against Egypt in March - the Villa man, who has been troubled by injuries over the past year or so, did not make the 23-man squad for the world cup, or indeed the provisional 30. Steve Wade: Battling Villa blown away by a hot Vaart! The Spurs result certainly left a bit a stink hanging around this week but even if Spurs' latest acquisition of Rafael van der Vaart had too many reminders of Arsenal's late signing of Andrei Arshavin (which also gave them the edge over Villa) was a bit too painful to get philosophical about I was chuffed to see Emile Heskey put in another superb, albeit curtailed, performance. Seeing it on the telly I got a bit shouty-excited Something For The Weekend (302)
Stewart Downing says he is happy to be back to full fitness and - gulp, he really shouldn't have said this - that he is pleased he has suffered no set backs. 'Since I've come back I don't think I've missed a game and that's a pleasing thing for me. You can't think about what's gone on in the past or mentally you'd be all over the place. I'm not that fussed. I've taken a few whacks on it in the past couple of months so it's not a problem at all.' Full article: www.avfc.co.uk
Luke Young says that Emile Heskey retiring from the international game will help Villa and feels the same about his decision not to stay in contention: www.avfc.co.uk

Fieldy: Gerard Houllier has challenged Barry Bannan to become the player his potential says he should and prove the critics wrong who say a wee man cannot make it in the Premiership. Bannan is on duty with the Scottish U21's tonight, but Houllier believes it's the first of many steps and challenges Bannan should be able to easily traverse given his 'skill, intelligence and desire'. Fieldy: Marc Albrighton and Luke Young have hailed the impact of Gerard Houllier in kick starting Reo-Coker's season. Speaking on the Official Site Marc Albie Albrighton used clichés like a 'new lease of life' and 'reborn' to describe the changing fortunes of Reo-Coker and he couldn't be more pleased given how the player has slotted into midfield and helped shore us up a touch. 'I think he had a couple of season where he wasn't enjoying his football but the gaffer now has given him a new lease of life. Full article: Reo Reborn Under Houllier
Fieldy: Richard Dunne believes that Gerard Houllier's possession based style of football will enable Villa to light up the Premiership with a more dominant style of play. Speaking on the Official Site Dunne explained that the players were excited by the new regime and changing our style from a simple counter attacking team will help us dominate matches and control games better - which hopefully will mean we aren't as knackered come the final 20 minutes and won't be blitzed so often which has been the cause of plenty of points lost over the years.
