'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Lennon's loss is Downing's gain

From Vital England:

Aaron Lennon is the latest England player forced out of the squad to face Montenegro in next weeks Euro 2012 qualifier.

Having complained of a sore back on Friday following further tests today it was decided to release the Spurs man from the squad so he could go back to Spurs for further treatment.

His place has been taken by Stewart Downing, who returns to the England set-up for the first time since a friendly against Egypt in March - the Villa man, who has been troubled by injuries over the past year or so, did not make the 23-man squad for the world cup, or indeed the provisional 30.

Downing 'might' get the nod to start, although it is more likely his former Boro teammate Adam Johnson will be chosen by Fabio Capello after the Man City winger impressed as a sub in the last couple of games, scoring in each.

Fantastic for Stewie. Needs a good performance and no injuries now!

Good luck to him. Make the most of your chance.

Downing needs this to get his confidence up, i still put Johnson ahead of him though but maybe Capello sees it differently?

He should of been in ahead of lennon and SWP anyway so justice is served.

You're right P.Avfc, Lennon is rubbish. Anyway, have a look at the England squad. All the arguments about change and looking tothe future out of the window. Same old, same old. For example: Long term, why would you pick Barry and others of his age group? Added to that, Sir Trevor Foolish putting "Dutch" McLaren's name in the ring for an England return. What a joke!!

Get in there Stewie, and if you're given the opportunity, grab it with both hands. The season has started very brightly for Stewart, and he deserves this recall.

Agree with the comments made above about Aaron Lennon. The guy is no more international class than I am. Vastly over-rated. And yes, we're still sticking basically with the same old, same old. The old guard will still be with us in two years time, all the talk about a new beginning appears to have been just that. Pure talk.

Ashley Young called up to England. reason? Performing well away from his position on the wing up front along side Emile. So in capello's hands he gets put back on the wing and will be told to play differently and track back all the time. Result? Doesn't do as well for country as he does for club, papers make remarks, dents player confidence. As for Downing there is no way he will make it in above Adam Johnson.

Agree with many comments. Downing like many other Villa players this season is improving all the time. Good on him! He deserves his chance, hope he has a bit of luck and keeps his place!

Not really suprised to hear that.

I know everyone likes their own players but seriously Downing is ****. A one legged Lennon actually smoking his cigar while playing is better than Downing. He has zero pace, zero tricks, can't beat a man 1 v 1. Wtf do you look for in a wide man as for me he has nothing that the position requires. Young on the other hand is quality and has everything that Downing hasn't and never will have.
