Aston Villa Backroom Team Named

Gerard Houllier has announced his Aston Villa backroom team, welcoming a number of new faces, and promoting an all too familiar one!

The first, most linked, and most obvious announcement is that former Leeds United manager Gary McAllister has joined the club as assistant manager. Gary Mac had previously been first team coach under Gordon Strachan at the Scottish Annexe of the North-East of England.

The controversial World Cup fitness coach Robert Duverne has joined up with Houllier. The man who got into a heated training-pitch bust up with Manchester United`s Patrice Evra will be undoubtedly looking forward to a fresh start a little bit further out of the spotlight.

Gordon Cowans has been given a promotion, moving up to the role of 1st team coach in a move that will undoubtedly please even the least traditional of Aston Villa fans.

Rafa Gonzalez has been promoted from Reserve Team, to first team goalkeeping coach.

Kevin Mac has admitted he will return to his reserve team manager duties, until such time that he decides what he wants to do with his career!

Welcome to the new boys, and congratulations to Sid and Rafa!

I'm disappointed how things have turned out for mac. He dithered over his decision to apply for manager, and then his tenure hasn't set the world alight either. There have been positives, but I just can't see him being happy to return to his old reserves job, which is where he has really excelled for us as a club.
