Niblot1 asked in our forum >>> Click Here >>> are you England in disguise?!
In my 20 or so years of watching the Villa and following them religiously the similarities between us as a club and England as a nation is becoming increasingly more prominent.
The fans that turn up at both Wembley and Villa Park have an expectation. They turn up, pay their money and want something back in return, they want to win every game and they want to be entertained along the way and this I see is a problem.
When England draw away from home to the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, the fan's get on their back, the team gets booed. When England are winning against a small nation at home and it's only 1 - 0 the same thing happens. And this happens far too often at Villa Park.
Should we as a nation and a club have this sort of expectation? Should we demand entertainment and results week in week out as we are the paying customer? Or should we just turn up and support the club no matter what?
When you look at our nation and our club we have no real merit in our expectation. Internationally we do not have the players to compete with the likes of Spain, Germany, Brazil and Argentina yet every four years it is 'going to be our year'.
At the Villa it is no different, every season it is going to be our year, we are going to win some silverware but again we do not have the budget to compete with the Chelsea's and Man Cities of this world, we do not have the stature to attract the players that Man Utd, Arsenal & Liverpool can attract yet we are expected to compete year in year out with these teams.
I'm not saying we shouldn't be optimistic, optimism is great, just don't get on the teams back if we don't win a cup or if we don't finish fourth.
