'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Manager Press Talk Continues

Well, the press today are still insisting that Villa are after Gerard Houllier as first choice.

Last night the remember, there were quotes: 'It seems that it`s not a done deal there are other candidates for the job and I don`t think there will be a decision taken in the next 24 to 48 hours as we thought originally. It`s going to take a little bit longer than that so we might have to wait until Thursday or Friday before we know who is the new Aston Villa manager.' See: Gerard Houllier - NOT A Done Deal For Villa

Today in The Sun a report says that Houllier will decide today whether he wants the job or not. They also repeat that the Frenchman would not be wanting a director of football role and would want to be manager. Only way any appointment will work surely? The culture over here never seems to lend itself to a director of football does it? Which is strange because in theory it should be a great system!

The paper quotes a source saying Houllier is first choice. GERARD HOULLIER will decide today if he wants the job as Aston Villa boss.

Interesting comment from a Liverpool fan at the bottom of that article saying it was mostly Houllier players who won the Champions League under Benitez + pointing out Houllier won the league and Cup for Lyon. Hadn't Lyon already won three titles in a row before that his arrival though?

And... gulp...Tony Paskin in The Express says Houllier would look to bring his former Liverpool assistant manager Phil Thompson.

And that folks, at the moment, is all the 'news' around... we will of course update if anything changes. All I can say is until it is done and dusted (and remember: Gerard Houllier - NOT A Done Deal For Villa ) I refuse to get 'upset' by any press talk. This one for me wouldn't be the worst appointment in the world but would be met with more of a shrug than a celebration. I would rather see a younger person in charge but I am also very mindful, what with the woeful timing of the walkout, that the job of bringing in the right manager has been made ten times worse. We don't know who has applied, who is available and who the club have approached to try to tempt. IF we did, then we could have more of a rounded debate but obviously, we will never know! lol

Now what was that song we used to sing to Phil Thompson! :o)
