Vienna Squad Confirmation

The lads touched down in Vienna earlier this afternoon, and the squad is as follows...

Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan, Elliott Parish, Eric Lichaj, Stephen Warnock, Ciaran Clark, Curtis Davies, Nathan Baker, Isaiah Osbourne, Habib Beye, Nigel Reo-Coker, Barry Bannan, Stewart Downing, Marc Albrighton, James Collins Jnr, Nathan Delfouneso, Shane Lowry, Emile Heskey, Jonathan Hogg, Andreas Weimann

Reasonable mix of youth and experience, and there's no doubt that Kevin MacDonald knows most of the names listed particularly well.

Richard Dunne misses out due to a suspension, and MacDonald has deliberated rested Petrov, Ash, Luke Young and John Carew so there are no complications for the Newcastle clash.

Likely squad from that would have to be:

Guzan, Beye, Davies, Clark, Warnock, Albrighton, Coker, Bannan, Downing, Heskey and Weimann

Based on Wet Spam and Big Mac's subsequent comments.

Weakened yes, but weak no.

After all the moaning about MoN not rotating the squad; cue the very same people moaning that the squad IS going to be rotated...

i think our focus will be the league this year. But i think K-mac is also giving these set of players a chance to force their way into the squad against newcastle. I think the players he didnt take + friedel and warnock are the only guaranteed players to start. All of these, spesh reo, davies, clark and heskey have got something massive to prove

Got to put Friedl in and the Fonz. I am a massive supporter of giving youth their chance - but this is a huge huge match in my book as it is the one on which our hard fought qualification depends. Cringers fossed.

Would like the fonz in instead of Emule but otherwise good opportunity for Bannan who shone in the chamionship last year, Albrighton who shone on sat, Lichaj who was great in preseason and Weiman who rattled them in pre season last year and wasn't too shabby this year either. If it goes wrong its only half time and we can make eleven changes if needed for the return leg.

Chocolate tea pot- love it mate, although AViena has a point that rotation shouldn't be necessary after 1 game even if we have three games in a week. Hey ho we'll see tomorrow.

I just hope this is a strong enough team. Cant really understand the resting after just one game, this is more a continuation of pre-season for some of these players! Still I am confident he can handle the youngsters well, better than MON as he has had more experience with them in the reserves. Beats playing first team players out of position anyhow! UpTheVilla!

yep chocolate teapot - funny. squad wise - kmacdonald knows the young guys better than MON did, and the starting 11 mike suggests is a good one....

I have to be honest, i'd rather win the cup than not win it, not sure this is the way forward, for a club like ours, we need to attract players, so quailifying for a european compitition, then what looks like taking no interest in it defeats the object, what next, half way through the season when we're safe from relegation and can't reach champions league, we let our 1st team go on holiday early!
