Bye Bye Milner and Shorey

Bye Bye Milner and Shorey

James Milner will no longer have to fill in at right back after being left out of last night's Valencia friendly because O'Neill expects his Man City move any minute.

Speaking on the Official Site following the match O'Neill clarified the earlier comments surrounding Milner which were basically he wasn't involved because of his back injury, the same stuff that was kicked out during the Guadiana Cup.

The truth however finally came out and O'Neill simply wasn't playing him because he expects his move to Man City to be formalised within the next few days.

'We didn't play him tonight primarily because there could be something in terms of the transfer. Really that's where we stand.'

So enough of the back problem BS, as expected by everybody with half a brain, Milner hasn't been involved in our pre season because the deal is nigh on done.

I don't blame Milner, like I didn't Barry, and I wish him the best. Only so many times as a professional and ambitious player I suppose you can see your dream of silverware and Champions League football fall away in March with a manager patently incapable of using the squad he has purchased or making sensible substitutions, and that's ignoring everything else.

O'Neill doesn't care what I, or other fans think, Milner however cares about what he can win.

In other news, O'Neill also confirmed that Nicky Shorey was undergoing a medical at the Boingers during the Valencia match.

'Nicky has gone over there for a medical, I know some fee has been agreed, it seemed that everything was in place at the time.'

In worse news for Villans everywhere, the rumour linking Emile Heskey to Bristol City is a non starter though.

'That's not true. I can definitely tell you that's not true.'

So players capable of doing a job are on O'Neill's out list, yet a striker who doesn't score will continue to pick up his excellent wages.

Welcome to the new season...it's all Randy's lack of investment you know and not O'Neill waste of money.

Mike - yr sarcasm is understandable...Shorey is a decent player who really never got a chance - to impress or give Warnock a rest! so who is the new back-up guy who will not get a chance? as far as Milner going - if Ireland is part of the deal i am quite happy - he is talented. lets hope MON plays him.....

2 things about that!! 1 - the first offer was £20m and O'Neill has done great to wait until he basically got Ireland (a perfect replacement for Milner) for FREE in a £20m+Ireland deal. He has also had Keane and McGeady waiting with their Villa training kit in their bags ready for a move. I imagine that still leaves £5m or so (maybe towards Huntelaar - we can but hope!!) 2 - if he insists on sticking with a XI with little rotation I would be quite happy from a business/wages POV if he sells the 'back-ups' and has a bench consisting of the youngsters. OK we may not have Shorey, Sidwell, L Young etc on the bench but if we have Lichaj, Albrighton, Bannan, Clark I would be happy enough. Think we will have Ireland,Keane, McGeady plus one. Really excited to see who - hope Huntelaar but could see it being Jenas.

Hope Ireland does move to Villa - if you can resurrect his career the way you did with Richard Dunne you'll be getting an absolute bargain. Rumour in Manchester is that Ireland is coming around to the idea of moving to Brum now thatMancini's told him he might not be in his plans for the coming season. Hope you use the money wisely

If you get Keane mcGeady and Ireland I think it'll have been a good summer for you... Of course you'll still have Heskey though, so you'll not finish 4th this season either.

If you do get Ireland for Milner, then the deal for you is a good one, Milner not worth what City are paying and Ireland is a class player, you are in a no lose situation.

I agree with Buzz, Fear and most others on here regarding Milner. Oneil and his staff played him on the wing, cm, and fullback showing his vesatility and gaining him recognition and we are right to demand the best possible deal, no disrespect to Man City but why should we just give them Milner on their terms ? I really hope we get Ireland or Bellamy as part of this deal and get to spend the money this Summer as we all need a boost !! I am a bit dissapointed that Milner was praising Villa for stability in his career after Newcastle and Leeds- then he is off like a rat up a drainpipe !! but regardless, hopefully we will get the better deal.

I think we are definitely getting the better end of the Milner deal, anything exceeding £15m and Stephen Ireland is a fantastic deal as he is a perfect replacement. I still believe Shorey is too lightweight and I believe we signed him because of the Bouma injury back in 2008. I think MON quickly realised he wasn't good enough hence why he didn't get a chance after the first couple of months of 2008/09. I'm not defending MON here because you would hope he had scouted him before purchase but I think he was a panic buy due to the injury to Bouma.
