Things Have to Change

Last weekend Aston Villa took part of the Guadiana Cup, a small pre-season tournament to boost fitness levels up. As I know this was just pre-season and a chance to boost fitness and give some younger players a chance to play with the big boys. We won our first game against Feyenoord 3-1, with Albrighton, Heskey and Sidwell hitting the net. In the final game, which would decide the winner we got hammered 1-4 by Benfica, Carew gave us some pride after he scored a goal in the final quarter. As for a team with no new faces, things are going to have to change.

Looking at the negatives. We played poorly pretty much in every game. Apart from the second half against Feyenoord. But when we played our team was unorganised and no ideas at all. Sidwell, apart from the goal was awful and doesn't add much to Villa's squad, which I hope that we can offload him. Downing did say that he would do better with pre-season under his belt; so far not a lot of results and his performance wasn't all the impressive. Beye was caught out of position a few times and while Shorey looks a better full-back at time, when faced against a winger with much pace he is exposed.

So what am I trying to get at? Well the truth of the matter is that we are going to have to bring some new faces to the team. The likes of Sidwell, Beye and Shorey all have to leave Villa and I deeply hope that some club will make a bid for them.

On the other hand, the Guadiana Cup was a successful tournament for Albrighton and Carew. Albrighton did a fantastic job in Portugal and was my player of the tournament, as he put in crosses, shots everything. Its a different player from the Peace Cup, a lot more confidence and I hope that we see him play more of a part in Villa's Premier League campaign. Carew gave 100% even when we where losing, he scored us the goal against Benfica which was well deserved. Also proved that not only Agbonlahor can play as a lone striker.

It was a good pre-season tournament to watch and I know this is just pre-season so the games are just about fitness levels. But I have a feeling that the team that we saw playing against Benfica are the team, which will start against West Ham, which is going to be a real tough match.

All the Villa fans know that we have to bring in at least one new face to the team if there is any chance for us to compete for a Europa League spot, because Champions League is out of reach at the moment.

Its a funny old game, when the team do well we back the manager and the chairman, when we play a pre-season match and get walloped were all of a sudden a bag of ******... I still think he will be bringing players in its just we have to wait for them.

I wonder how long we have to wait for these players to come in. I think this time MON has to show some performance. Its August and no new faces

Change, I remember that, not for a while though and not for a while yet I fear

We have an awful lot of dead wood and need 6 new faces in before the season starts. Will this happen? I doubt it.......mid table at best next year I fear.

Holteender1969 --- exactly my feelings -- I would much prefer us to have a different/alternative plan, esp at VP when home peroformances have been dire - I think we play too much "don't lose" football, trying to chase 4th place......

I hope we have a good start to the campaign is all

I love coming to this site. It makes me feel so positive. I'm glad you lot don't manage the Villa. It would be fourth division football in no time at all. As someone much cleverer than me once said, 'Change? Why do we need change? Surely things are bad enough as they are.' If you want change you should be watching Portsmouth. Lots of changes there.

Our competitors are improving and we aren't. Simple fact. If the signings don't come in we won't be as competitive. Maybe its time to revisit the expectations of the fans. With MON in charge and without a massive checkbook we won't compete for champions league football. Randy Lerner's approach of running the club as a business and cutting down on spending means we will start fighting for a top 10 finish but we will be financially secure. As a supporter of the club I want us to be winning the league, the champions league and every other trophy we are involved in but I don't believe we will ever manage that now. Maybe its time for Randy to consolidate the current position of the club and make sure we continue our great work with agencies like Acorns and tighten the purse strings so we do not run up massive debts like other clubs. Either you splash the cash and pray that the debt doesn't eat you club alive or you keep you debt low and realise that you won't compete with the top echilons of the league.

If we keep Milner, get rid of Shorey, Sidwell, Beye, possibly L Young and use the money to bring in somebody who can score a goal plus replace the rest of the outs with youth then I think we'll be going in the right direction. What actually happens time will tell..
