Collins Injury Not Serious

James Collins will still be travelling with the Villa camp to Portugal despite his substitution after only a few minutes in last nights Walsall friendly.

It was rumoured that Collins was struggling prior to the game although news had been very thin about what the problem might be and how serious it was last night, but thankfully it's not considered anything major and as guessed the substitution was purely precautionary as O'Neill doesn't want to make the niggles he has picked up any worse.

Collins had scans on his calf this morning and passed with flying colours, so hopefully with a bit of rest his stop/start pre season can finally get underway.

Speaking to the Express and Star Monny said:

'James felt his calf a little in the warm up but decided to go ahead. It was obviously a blow to him, his pre season has been kind of stop start.'

O'Neill added that Collins has had quite a few niggles so far and he hasn't been able to shake them properly.

It's likely he won't figure in our first Guadiana Cup match and will be given time to rest up, and then hopefully he'll be back and be able to get up to speed for the battle to come.

Agreed marcobavfc. There's little doubt amongst Villans I would think, that our best and most effective central defensive partnership, consists of Richard Dunne and James Collins. They complement each other superbly, and form an effective barrier in front of Brad Friedel. They need of course to keep up their excellent form of last season, because young Cieran Clark is going to be hammering loudly on Martin O'Neill's door before too long, wondering when his talents are going to be seen on the first team stage. I hope we keep hold of Curtis Davies too, then we'll definitely be well served in central defence.

Did not mantion Dunney in the above as like you I took it as a given that he was a defo starter at centre half as things stand alongside collins...chatting with cowans at the legends evening & he really rates Clark & would love to see him get a bit more of a look in!!!
