Laursen: Dunne Is Better Than Me

Such a strange headline, and quite frankly I'd have ignored it unless the man had really said it himself...that said I wouldn't go quite that far.

Speaking on the Official Site today as the players returned to training, Martin Laursen again said how impressed he was with the defence last season and that he imagines every fan was delighted with last summers moves for Richard Dunne, and new England squaddie Stephen Warnock.

'Stephen impressed me at left back but in my mind he wasn't quite as impressive as Richard.'

Laursen adds that Dunne being in his first year at a new club, and following in his footsteps following his unfortunate retirement, that the pressure was really on to live up to the expectations and performances we fans had come to expect from Laursen himself.

In short, the Man Mountain thinks Dunne more than made the position his own and was as good a replacement as we were ever likely to find.

'Then he came and was handed the number 5 shirt and played even better than me. That was a big achievement, he impressed me a lot.'

Martin obviously sees the similar qualities they share as players and admits he would've loved the opportunity to play alongside Dunne in the heart of our defence, but he also admits he would've loved to have carried on playing fullstop - and he's certainly not alone in wishing that could've happened.

He ends by describing Dunne as somebody who takes responsibility on the pitch and always gives 100%, and does so fearlessly. More importantly he is always ready for the battle of the Premiership.

The comparisons are obvious aren't they.
