Froggy On Gab

Steve Froggatt is becoming a regular on the Official Site thesedays, and today his topic of interest is Gabby Agbonlahor.

Our former left winger believes that next season we will see even more improvement from Gabby, but given how he worked over last season to bulk up, Froggatt expects he will have used his England disappointment as motivation to work on other parts of his game this summer.

'You ask any defender, the one thing they hate more than anything else is pace.'

Froggatt goes further and suggests that it wouldn't take much improvement for Gabby to become a real top quality striker, and for him to be able to use his natural attributes correctly.

'Physically he is becoming a man now, but he needs to be a little bit cuter. He needs to start learning his trade in terms of runs.'

Froggy isn't far wrong, we all know Gab can run like a whippet but plenty of times last season he was static in the box and when our midfield was looking for an outlet.

Daft really as he never had that problem when leading the line as a solo striker, but with a slight improvement in his over all play he could really take him to the next level - especially if we are going to persist with 442.

As for Froggy's final words, he says with improvement Gabby could become as influential as Dalian Atkinson was for us, and whilst I don't see that myself the potential for Gabby I think is to be far better than Atkinson ever was.

Admittedly I doubt we'll ever see Gab get the ball around the half way line, go past 7 people and then lob a keeper from 25 odd yards but it would be nice to see him try!

nice guy Steven Froggatt, had a few chats with him back in the day, we used to have our knees treated at Good Hope hospital at a similar time, then when he was working for the Mercury doing a column we had the odd chat. He was always ultra interested in Villa and an all round good egg!

A good lad, and obviously knows a good striker when he sees one.

He still needs guile. Sometimes his runs are just into trouble and not not the box. A low priced Keane is the man to teach him the runs.
