FORMER PLAYERS 'IN THE MIDDLE`

Lapworth Cricket Club - Sunday 4th July
Melson Ground, Old Warwick Road, Lapworth B94 6AZ

Now in its 3rd year, the 2010 Lapworth Village 'Fun Day` on Sunday 4th July is bigger and even better with a BBQ, Pig Roast, Ice Cream unit, teas and coffees, licensed bar and soft drinks available all day.

The main attraction will be a 30 over`s a side cricket match between Aston Villa former players and Lapworth CC.

The Aston Villa team are looking forward to avenging the narrow defeat they suffered in 2008. Football legends Paul Merson, Gordon Cowans, Gary Shaw, Steve Staunton, Pat Heard, and Chris Nicholl, to name but a few, are all expected to be in attendance.

There will be many stalls situated around the ground with numerous children attractions including a face-painting stall and many games - with even some for the bigger children!!

Entry to the ground costs just £2.50 per adult with children under 15 free. Car Parking is FREE. The Gates open at 1.45pm and the 'BIG MATCH` commences at 2.30pm.

It`s going to be a fabulous day, so please come along with your families and have lots of fun. A donation on the day will be made to Charity, which this year is Lapworth First Responders.

'OLD STARS` LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

In order to efficiently manage the increasing popularity of the Aston Villa Old Stars football team, a new management team has been set up, comprising General Secretary Karl Court, team manager Chris Nicholl, and regular players Colin Gibson, Gordon Cowans and Steve Staunton.

The Aston Villa Old Stars has already received 96 fixture requests for 2010 alone, and can only fulfil a maximum of 25 in any one year. In addition, a growing number of invitations are being received for the team to play overseas.

Working to a brief produced by the Aston Villa FPA Chief Executive, the new 'team` will be analysing and adapting policies and procedures across all aspects of the Aston Villa Old Stars operation for the immediate and longer-term future.

Karl Court said, "Our main objective is to implement policies and procedures that will ensure we are positioned to meet the demands on the team well beyond the current 51 years the team has been playing fundraising matches."

SUPPORTING THE HEROIC AND COURAGEOUS

On Sunday 6th June, the Aston Villa Old Stars helped to raise thousands of pounds for the 'Help For Heroes` charity and the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine at Selly Oak Hospital which treats the injured returning from the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The football match versus a West Midlands Police X1 at the Tally Ho Centre in Birmingham was the centrepiece at the West Midlands Police Fun Day & Exhibition that was attended by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, other dignitaries and several thousand adults and children.

On a gloriously sunny day, the Aston Villa Old Stars team of (4-3-3): D. Dudley; D. Bradley (sub J. Pearson 65 mins), A. Comyn, S. Staunton, B. Small; M. Kinsella, G. Cowans, C. Gibson (injury, sub D. Norton 35 mins); M. Burke, M. Carruthers, T. Morley - were 6-2 victors with goals from Burke (2), Staunton, Morley, Carruthers, and Norton.

HAPPY RETIREMENT IVOR!

Ex Aston Villa & Wales international Ivor Powell who was awarded the MBE in 2008 for services to sport, and who is in the Guinness Book of Records as the 'world`s oldest working football coach` announced his retirement last month aged 93. Latterly, he had been a coach at Team Bath for over 30 years. Everyone wishes Ivor a happy and deserved rest.
