Kop That? Over To You Mr O'Neill

Much of the press talk today is understandably about Liverpool and their vacant manager position.

It is no real surprise that Martin O'Neill is one of the names dominating the talk, along with Fulham boss Roy Hodgson.

The Daily Express go so far as to suggest that MON would consider the move if Liverpool got new owners. Well, new owners aren't close if my understanding of the situation is correct. The report also says that time is running out for MON to manage one of the truly big clubs in the game. Ouch!

Our forum thread on the Rafa sacking/MON to Liverpool appears quite lively! Click Here

They appear to be arguing the pro's and con's of Martin O'Neill over at with an interesting comparison of spending for Rafa v DOL/MON

The one interesting quote is: 'O'Neill creates *stability* at clubs he manages. For example: At Villa, he has bought 28 players; 24 of them are still at the club.'

The odds on Martin O'Neill with William Hill at the moment has him as favourite at 6/4 with Kenny Dalglish (who has distanced himself from the job) 2nd at 9/4. Roy Hodgson is 3/1 and Gus Hiddink 8/1

Interesting times. The best way to stop this press speculation? Well, Martin O'Neill could come out with a statement saying he isn't interested, that would end it pretty quickly I would think.

Over to you Mr O'Neill !

be interesting to see how this develops, hope it isn't another season long saga like the Barry thing. IF anything was to happen, it needs to happen quickly so we can get organised and move on. As said, IF.

MON came out with a coment straight away after the England squad was announced with Warnock in it. No coment now means he's definitely thinking about it. "One of the truly big clubs" *#*$*!

MON has already said he is staying, the chances are he wont say anything as he thinks doing so gives the bull***** storys credibility. not sure i agree with him as we all would like him to come out and put the record straight but then it was only a week or two ago he did that so im not worried

As I understand it MON is one of the few managers with a pr company. agent in place. He is therefore one of the most able in dealing with the press and its story development. In that case if is so media savvy - I agree that two words - not interested - are all that is needed. The longer he stays silent and the stories continue we can only assume that someone is floating them.

Why would MON deny the rumours? The more people start believing this is true, the more cash Randy may throw at him to spend this summer. Many managers think public relations means having sex on a beach, MON knows a lot more than that!

have the Daily Express got any source/quote or is it just another piece of poor journalism that we come to expect in this day and age.

Is it just me or does anyone else find it disrespectful to us villains when you keep hearing the scousers banging on about MON is our man...... NO HE AINT hes the manager of ASTON VILLA who in fact finished above the scousers this season...... I feel going there would be a step backward for him..... I also read somewhere that Milninho would consider a move there too. For a start they have no money to spend , lack of champs league may force some players to leave, while a couple of additions to our squad ....welll you never know..... maybe im a dreamer ha. Talk sport keep cropping up with Mon to Pool Mark Hughes to Villa....I think (hope) that MON will stay

no quotes Lee, think the media frenzy is largley due to the fact MON is rated + the bookies favourite. Those odds will no doubt vary between a few as rumours go back and forth. Thing is, MON is one that would be in the frame and as he has the best odds, it makes an obvious story. There is also Hodgson who seems to have repaired a reputation that was at a very low eb following his Blackburn stint. I think IF MON wants to consider it - lets face it, he won't have been approached yet so has little to consider at present - he is more than entitled to, as I say in the article, it is his career, the decisions are his. However if he already knows where he wants to be next season, a quick quote to the press would allow them to move on to the next possible candidate and leave us to focus on who we will buy this summer and on the up coming season! I can see no down side in a quick quote from MON but can understand him wanting to remain silent if there is an interest there! He can't deny all links and stories but with this one, it would be good if he did!

MON will be loving the attention. If he's smart he'll use the situation to leverage a few more quid for summer transfers. Don't think he'll go, if he stays he gets credit for Villa's progress and his reputation stays intact, if he goes he would need to work miracles against a backdrop of boardroom un rest just to avoid being labelled a failure.

If he did go, MON would be in a win/win situation. Get back to top-four and stabilise and he gets all the credit. Things go badly and he can blame the board. Just as he could have done if the takeover had collapsed and he was stuck with Doug four years ago.

What is amusing is that if this drags on for two months and then we get a new manager at the start of August we will still make our new signings quicker than if MON stays

Also, if he goes to Loserpool then he will be in for our players which means we can inflate the prices so that ManC ay the proper amount....p.s. I wouldn't mind Hughes here but I do love MON and would like him to reach a decade with us. Just look at what Man U have done with a steady manager improving the team over the years but retaining a quality quartet: Giggs, Nev, Scholes and before that Scmeichel for ages.

He`d be perfect for them if Torres/Gerrard stay, if they leave and he has to spend they`ve got no chance.

Not for one minute would I be the least bit surprised if Martin was very interested in the Liverpool job, and realistically, who could blame him? Certainly not I. I think that he'd be a good fit up at Anfield, and would soon get one of europe's top clubs back on track. He doesn't have to make any comments, why should he? I do expect though the Liverpool hierarchy to sound him out, and I just hope that when they decide to make that move, they do it quickly, and matters are resolved with the minimum of delay.

i think MON will still be at villa park come the start of next season, with all the problems liverpool have off the field i just cant see him joining them at this time.

mark hughes at the villa wouldn't be a bad thing if MON goes, for one I can't see him leaving, but if he does then hughes can manage the team like he did at blackburn, were he buys the players he wants not the players the owner of man city wants! time will tell.
