Villan Lowry Misses Out on World Cup

Aston Villa youngster Shane Lowry has sadly missed out on a place in the Australia squad for the World Cup in South Africa.

Lowry, 20, has had an impressive 6 months or so on loan to League 1 promotion winners Leeds United and this was enough to get himself a place within the training squad for the socceroos, however his performances seemingly have been inadequate as coach Vim Verbeek chose others ahead of him for first ever African World Cup.

Lowry had previously represented the Republic of Ireland at U17 and U21 level before switching allegiance in order to play for the nation he was born in. He has however yet to make any distinct inroads into the squad.

Whilst no doubt a bitter blow to the defender, I am quite confident that even being named in the provisional 30-man squad will be a boost for a player who is clearly one for the future, given his two-year contract extension that was signed the day he received that Ozzie call up.

Australia's defence is a big concern...Moore is too old and too slow and was he ever good enough?....no is the answer to that...why the hell not give Lowry a go?...but he is one for the future for sure

Lowry is a decent enough young footballer, but wasn't I understand all that successful at Elland Road. Didn't become a fans favourite lets say. I can only go by what I've seen of him in his time at B6 playing for the youth team and the reserves. He definitely looked talented, and well capable of making his way in the professional game, be it at Villa Park or elsewhere, but something now tells me that he might just have lost his way a little bit. He's young though, certainly has ability, so I look for him to bounce back, and get back on his feet.

few strange things to say glensider considering he got a call up for the national side and despite not making the 23, he is there with the squad. and avfc have just given him a further 2 year contract....

craig moore is the best my nation has in central defence even if his old legs dont move as quick as they used too. Lowry is still young and has the possibility to go to 3 more world cups provided we qualify and that hes fit and playing well so no harm done really
