Overall A Good Season For Villa?

It's been a good season overall…

Well, there we have it - another season done & dusted. Although it's had it's highs (Beating Man U at Old Trafford) and it's lows (losing to Manchester United at Wembley), overall I don`t think we can complain too much… I'm sure the opti's will be delighted, and I'm sure the negi's will be disappointed, but I think overall nobody can have too many complaints. Here's some of the highlights and the lowlights of the season as a recap, and to be fair to both sides of the coin!

Highlights

Finishing on more points than last season
Beating United at Old Trafford
Beating Liverpool at Anfield
Reaching the League Cup Final
Reaching the FA Cup Semi-Final
The purchases of Dunne, Collins & Delph
Milner's new found role in midfield
Beating blues twice

Lowlights

Losing at Wembley twice
Heskey…
Delph's injury
Luke Young's mystery absence
Losing to Wigan at home on the first day
Missing out on 4th again
Only winning 8 home games

My personal opinion is that the good outweighs the bad, and with just 2 quality signings, we could go far next season. Wouldn't mind Benayoun & Bent please :D Let's hope that this summer brings in some real quality, and not just more squad players…

Also think it's time for a good clearout… Sidwell, Beye, Harewood & Heskey to start with!

Here's how I see us lining up for the first game of next season:

GK: Friedel
DR: L Young
CB: Dunne
DB: Cuellar
DR: Warnock
ML: A Young
MC: Milner
MC: Petrov
MR: Benayoun
ST: Carew
ST: Bent

Subs: Guzan, Collins, NRC, Albrighton, Downing, Agbonlahor, Delfouneso

Here's to next season, UTV!

Think we need better quality, i would suggest, Richards, right back/centre half, so mon would love that, Ireland and Falco from Porto. I would sell Beye, salifoooooo, Osbourne, release Harewood and Bouma, everyone else i would keep as we need a squad.

Also i met Collins Milner and Freidal after the Blackburn game and have to say how friendly Collins and Milner were, they made time 4 chit chat and photos, however big Brad not so much utv

Im with u on the signings, however I feel Luke Young is off!

As if he's going to drop Gabby and Downing! And Heskey to leave? Are you mad...MON would lose his only tactic.

One place higher than I expected , but we are going nowhere fast if we are honest!

I'm satisfied, more than satisfied in fact. Witnessed some enjoyable victories, enjoyed the two Wembley trips, and looking forward to the future with both confidence and high hopes...as long that is, that MON stays put and continues the project. A new man at the helm and all the upheaval that would entail, will not in my opinion, be good for business. Not yet anyway.

Glensider - I enjoy your reviews and agree with most of your comments. This time I'm not so sure. When MON came I saw him as the man to take Villa to the top. Now, I'm not so sure. We have a great owner who has pumped money in but do we really have a great manager? I have my doubts for all of the reasons we see on this site week after week. Static team selection, players kept out for non-performance reasons as far as I can see, a total lack of tactics, poor home record and an inability to change a game. Given the investment he has had, is this really the best we could hope for? If things stay as they are can we realistically expect any/ much improvement next year? I've renewed my season ticket but do not have great optimism for next season being any better than this.

We finished 2 places in front of where I thought we would finish which was 8-10th. Should MON be allowed to dither through another season playing players out of position? No, but having said that he has got us to Wembley twice so I am 50/50

We continue to improve season on season with MON. The problem is other clubs possibly being able to improve at a faster rate because of the money available to them. Still MON is so close to getting there he absolutely deserves another year and I think all told the season was a success.
